This is the first of a series of events, with this being the Texas Intramural flag football champions competing against the Intramural champion from Texas A&M. Texas A&M will host the Basketball Intramural Showdown in the Spring 2014 semester. SAAC is collaborating with UTSG for the Intramural Showdown, in addition to Texas Athletics providing financial support for the event. Horacio invited all SAAC members to attend UTSG meetings at any time. All students are welcome to attend the meetings.

• Students For Texas Athletics (STA) Meeting - Hannah Allison (VB) updated SAAC members about an upcoming event with STA called the “Turn up DKR”. Fans are all encouraged to “be loud” for the last home games of the Texas Football season.

• Big 12 SAAC Conference Call – Grant Martin (BsB) stated that he was honored to represent Texas SAAC on this conference call. Grant reviewed the materials covered in the recent Big 12 SAAC Conference call on October 30, 2013. Division 1 Governance Update: David Flores, of the Big 12 Conference Office, led these conversations on the conference call.

• The NCAA governance structure is widely considered the most important issue for Athletics Departments around the country.

• NCAA Board met with nine outside groups to review proposals for a new governance structure. These types of initiatives take place behind closed doors with only board members. This demonstrates how serious the NCAA is about restructuring.

• Big 12 representative on the Board of Directors for NCAA is president of Kansas State University. Due to many factors, the Big 12 Conference is poised to make significant impact on ultimate decision regarding restructuring. Grant reiterated that the NCAA will listen to Student Athletes’ voice, and SAAC representatives will take part in a town-hall type meeting with all conferences offering input on the issue sometime in January 2014. Legislative Cycle Update:

• There will be 19 NCAA proposals that will be reviewed during the next legislative cycle. One example is the “Sports Medicine Package”

• Four proposals in particular that deal with the well being of Student-Athletes. Examples are: Proposal 1:

o Every member of the coaching staff, including trainers and strength coaches must be CPR certified among others

o Every strength coach must be certified through the national association every year to ensure Student Athlete safety

Proposal 2 o Permits maximum meal plan offered by the university through “boarding” in “room and

board” o Provides meals to Student Athletes (including non-scholarship SAs) at ANY event that

requires attendance: Practice, film reviews, weight training, etc. Two other proposals in Sports Medicine Package were not discussed. Grant mentioned that the 15 other proposals to be reviewed are administrative in nature. SAAC Leadership Summit: • The Big 12 Conference is looking for a host university for this year’s event, and it will take place

in June again. Grant summarized the call, and stated that a SAAC member representing the Big 12 Conference (David Klaudt) will be at the NCAA town hall meetings in January to represent the voice of Big 12 SAAC. The group thanked Grant for his updates.

• #Horns4Horns – Hannah requested to continue to tweet when student-athletes are

attending each other’s competitions. Currently: 51 tweets; 58 following; 121 followers.

• Upcoming SAAC Tailgates & Supporting Other Teams – The group discussed attending events in the Spring 2014 semester as a group for the following sports. Casey Wicker (MTF) stated that it would be beneficial if the events were a good match up or were significant to the team that was competing. The group added specific events for the following sports:

o Texas Basketball SAAC Tailgate – possible “Big Monday” game o Texas Tennis SAAC Tailgate - Men – OU; Women – Baylor o Texas Swimming & Diving SAAC Tailgate – Big 12 Conference Meet o Texas Baseball SAAC Tailgate – Friday game of Stanford series o Texas Softball SAAC Tailgate – Stephanie Wong is checking with her teammates o Texas Golf SAAC Tailgate - hosting Big 12’s o Texas Rowing SAAC Tailgate – Longhorn Invitational – March 22/23, 2014 o Texas Track & Field SAAC Tailgate – Texas Relays - Friday

• Reviewing Past and Upcoming Community Service Opportunities -

o Marbridge Foundation Awards Presentation (11/3): Morgan Snow (WTF), Grant Martin (BsB), and Abby Smith (SC) shared about their experience at the Marbridge Foundation Awards Presentation. Morgan mentioned that it was very memorable and she is thankful that she had the opportunity to attend. She mentioned that fellow SAAC member Ellen Lobb (WSW/DV) did a great job speaking at the event. Abby shared that it was very rewarding for her to attend, and be able to distribute awards with the Marbridge residents. Grant spoke about this being the “apex” of their sport journey after having several Special Olympics competitions. One award that Grant was able to hand out was the “Highest Jumper Award”. Grant said that it was very gratifying to be able to be at the event and to represent Texas student-athletes. In summary, Marbridge Foundation is a place where adults with special needs live and enjoy activities, such as friendly athletic

competitions. The Awards Ceremony, in which student-athletes present awards to the residents, is a great way for teams to show their support for this cause.

o Orange Santa (11/25 through 11/27; 12/2 through 12/6): This project is a toy collection for UT staff members and their families who are in need. Student-athletes will collect toys prior to several competitions later this fall (11/25 through 11/27; 12/2 through 12/6) and can also participate by donating unused toys. If you have questions, please see Lara. Lara will send all SAAC members the list of most needed/requested items.
