Overview of the 2009 Reading Assessment

• Administered January – March 2009 to– 178,800 fourth-graders– 160,900 eighth-graders

• Students read literary and informational texts

• Questions aligned to three reading processes – Locate and recall– Integrate and interpret– Critique and evaluate

• Results available for grades 4 and 8 for– Nation– 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Department of

Defense school system

• Results reported as– Average scale scores (0–500 scale)– Achievement levels (Basic, Proficient, Advanced)
