Called By God Today's scriptures invite us to listen to two calls.

The first is the call issued by the Lord to the prophet Amos, the "shepherd and a dresser of syca-mores" (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom He sent out "two by two" (Mark 6:7). These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were baptized. The second reading in-vites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God "destined us for adoption" (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God, we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriages, families, schools and places of work. Let us be inspired today to say “Yes” to the call we hear once again through God's living word.

Antonians’ Christmas In July Yes, Christmas will be coming early for the clients of the Pregnancy Help Cen-ter in Slidell, Safe Harbor, Inc.—the Bat-tered Women’s Shelter in Mandeville—and Free Indeed Home in Covington, a shelter for underage victims of human

trafficking, sponsored by the Antonians. Please choose a tag from the Christmas tree set up in the front lobby of the church, which will identify the needed donations. Donations should be dropped off at the Church Office before July 29.

PLEASE DO NOT WRAP THE GIFTS.

Featured CD On Display The new cd “Protecting Innocence: Parenting,

Your Kids, and the Internet” is located at the front entrance to the church. Matt Fradd, a best-selling Catholic author, presents new data to show how the changes in the types and accessibility of pornogra-phy being promoted today make it far more danger-ous and harmful than ever before. Matt draws from a wealth of experience to guide parents in taking deci-sive action to protect their children, and he empow-ers adults with specific wording to effectively ad-dress this sensitive topic with children of all ages before they encounter pornography or after they have been exposed to it.

Offertory Giving In his letter to the Ephesian community, St. Paul

teaches that God, the Father, has established a divine plan to bring all of creation to Christ and that He has blessed us with the divine gifts to help implement that plan. Christian stewards know what their gifts are and remain committed to using them in the ser-vice of the Lord. Do we know what our gifts are? Do we believe that God has given us these gifts? Are we committed to using our gifts to serve the Lord?

Pope Francis’ Prayer Intention “That priests, who experience fatigue and loneli-

ness in their pastoral work, may find help and com-fort in their intimacy with the Lord and in their friendship with their brother priests.”

Thank God For You! Thank God for you, good friend of mine. Seldom is friendship such as thine, How very much I wish to be As helpful as you have been to me. Thank God for you!

When I recall from time to time How you inspired this heart of mine, I find myself inclined to pray, God bless my friend this very day. Thank God for you!

Of many prayer quests, one thou art, On whom I ask God to impart Rich blessings from His storehouse rare, And grant to you His gracious care. Thank God for you!

So often, at the throne of grace, There comes a picture of your face, And then instinctively I pray, That God may guide you all the way. Thank God for you!

Some day I hope with you to stand Before the throne at God’s right hand And say to you at journey’s end, Praise God, you have been to me a friend. Faith Lutheran Church, Dunedin, FL

Treasures From Our Tradition At the time of the Reformation, although Eng-

land broke away from papal authority under Henry VIII, a silent majority clung to the Catholic faith. Henry's eldest daughter, Mary, restored the "old reli-gion" in a fierce persecution of Protestants (she is called "Bloody Mary" for good reason.) His young-est daughter, Elizabeth, rejected papal ties. Under her reign, beginning with legislation in 1593, Catho-lics were persecuted again, and only the very wealthy could afford the fines for not attending An-glican services on Sunday. They were called "recusants," from a Latin word meaning "refuse," since they refused to attend the liturgy of the Church of England. Many families maintained Catholic tra-dition in secret, and today their descendants claim "Recusancy" as a mark of family pride. For genera-tions they sent their young people abroad to be edu-cated in convents and monasteries. It is not surpris-ing that the first monastery in colonial America springs from Holland with the daughters of patrician English recusant families. Port Tobacco, Maryland, proved fruitful soil for the Carmelite tradition.

Rev. James Field

Our Lady Of Mount Carmel—July 16 Mount Carmel is part of a mountain

range in northern Israel, significant to Christians for its biblical association with the prophet Elijah (1 Kings 18). In the twelfth century, the Carmelites were founded at a site that is supposed to have been Elijah’s cave and soon built a mon-astery there. For this reason, the Carmel-ites honor the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The English Carmelite St. Simon Stock (feast day, May 16) is believed to have been given the brown scapular by Our Lady, and those who wear it believe they can be sure of her help at the hour of their death.

St. Camillus De Lellis July 18 Laying aside a life of violence and

gambling, St. Camillus de Lellis was ordained a priest and later founded the Order of Clerks Regular Ministers to the Sick (the Camillians), a religious order dedicated to the sick, especially those

afflicted with the plague. Whether they were minis-tering in a hospital or tending to the wounded on the battlefield, the Camillians were easily identified by their black habit with a large red cross on the breast. St. Camillus implemented many innovative ap-proaches to hospital care, including proper ventila-tion, suitable diet and isolation of people with infec-tious diseases. He is also credited with the establish-ment of military hospitals and the setup of field am-bulances. Along with St. John of God, he is patron saint of hospitals, nurses and the sick.

St. Apollinaris—July 20 Not much is known about St.

Apollinaris, dates unknown, ex-cept that he was from Antioch, a Syrian, and the first bishop of Ravenna. Tradition says he was appointed bishop by St. Peter himself. Apollinaris was exiled with his people during the perse-cution of Emperor Vespasian. As he left the city, he was pointed out as the leader of the Christians. He was tortured and executed with a sword. St. Apolli-naris is a patron saint of those suffering from epilep-sy or gout and is shown in art with a sword, the in-strument of his martyrdom.

St. Lawrence Of Bridnisis—July 21 St. Lawrence of Brindisis was

born at Brindisi in what was then the Kingdom of Naples. He joined the Capuchins and was sent to be educat-ed at University of Padua. Lawrence was known for his intelligence, and he became fluent in most Europeans and Semitic languages. It was said that he knew the entire Bible in the original lan-guages. His known writings comprise eight volume of sermons, two treatises on oratory, commentaries on Genesis and Ezekiel and three volumes of reli-gious polemics annotated in Greek and Hebrew. He was canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1881 and pro-claimed a Doctor of the Church in 1959 by Pope John XXIII. St. Lawrence is the patron saint of the city of Brindisi and is depicted leading an army against the Turks, bearing the child Jesus, because of his role in battle against the Ottoman Empire.

Summer Summer is supposed to be a

time when we slow down and en-joy ourselves a bit, relax and may-be even take a vacation. But that is not usually what happens. We get bombarded trying to keep up with our kids’ sched-ules, demands at work, all sorts of activities. Many of us even feel like our vacations are hectic and stressful. In today’s culture we do not really know how to slow down. We just keep going until we have burned out.

This is not the kind of life God wants for you. He wants you to slow down and refresh ourselves from time to time so you can live with more passion and purpose. Here are some suggestions to slow down.

Do Less Most of us are doing too much because we have

not taken the time to really evaluate our priorities. Without a clear sense of what our priorities are, eve-rything is important, which means nothing is. Take some time to stop, examine your priorities, and con-sider what matters most. Focus on the essentials. Let the rest go, say “no” more often. Give yourself time between errands, work, family commitments, and visit friends to give your day a more leisurely pace.

Be present Slowing down is not so much about moving

more slowly as it is about being more present to what is going on around you. God wants you to be aware of things while they are actually happening. He wants you to fully experience every breath of air you take, every bite of food, every smile from a ba-by, every song you hear. Make an effort to focus on the NOW. When you realize you are distracted, gen-tly pull yourself back into the present moment and be attentive to the person, task or situation at hand.

Eat slower So many of us eat in a hurry, barely chewing our

food. We are too busy thinking about the things on our to-do lists. Next time you eat, be more mindful of what you are putting in your mouth. How does it look, smell or taste? Practice chewing more slowly and make healthy choices about what you eat. Sit at a table with others as much as you can, and enjoy the simple pleasures of eating.

Surround yourself with nature The results of research that shows how nature

slows us down. It brings our heart rates and blood pressure down, clears our minds, and brings a great-er sense of calm. Take time to get outside regularly. Do NOT text or talk on your cell phone. Instead, look around and observe what is going on in the beautiful, natural world God created.

Do things one at a time More of us recognize that we cannot do every-

thing at once, but often we subconsciously refuse to accept that. We think we are being more efficient when we multi-task, but the truth is, we are being less productive. We have to choose between many options when deciding what to do on any given day or in any given hour, so it is important that we focus on one thing at a time. You are going to feel the urge to jump from task to task. Just remind yourself that what you have chosen to focus on now is the most important thing at this time.

Disconnect more often Today we are constantly connected to our digital

devices. If we are not talking, we are texting or checking social media or email. It is incredible when you disconnect. Leave your phone behind more of-ten. Turn it off more frequently. Set rules for your-self. Maybe it is no digital devices at the dinner ta-ble. Or no checking your phone when visiting friends. Or taking a break from digital devices on Sundays. Choose something that will work for you. When you are connected to your phone all the time, you are constantly at the mercy of information com-ing in and the demand of others.

Allow more time and show up early Most of us underestimate how long things take.

Then we fell anxious, frustrated and rushed—like we are always running behind. If you believe an activity will take 15 minutes; give it half an hour. Then, if it actually does take 15 minutes, you will have an extra 15 minutes. By building more time into your sched-ule, you will arrive early or on time for commit-ments and your days will not seem so unmanageable. Enjoy your summer, and steer clear of burnout. Matthew Kelley

God’s Gift To Us This prayer is God’s precious gift to us today.

Let us accept the Catechism with gratitude and make this our prayer:

“You have given so much, O Lord; give us one more thing—a grateful heart.”
