It is often a bit of a surprise that these two scenes go together in this way. What on earth is it that Jesus has done to offend these people who knew him? After saying that no prophet is accepted by his own people, he makes two comparisons: the widow of Zarephath and Naaman the Syrian. These characters from Hebrew Scripture were healed by Elijah and Elisha respectively. But neither of them were from among the people of Israel. Jesus’ comments suggest that God will continue his kindness to those who live outside who are not only from Israel, but to all who are following him and leading lives directed toward goodness and truth. This is what infuriates them: the kindness he shows to those others, who are recognized as beneath them to those in his culture. Jesus, if you look carefully, is rather bold in speech throughout his ministry. The idea that God loves the gentiles is used by Jesus to make a point that would very likely make the hearers angry, but it is central to our belief. The life of the whole world is offered us in Christ, not only to select members or peoples. Additionally, if Jesus feels this way, we are led to another realization. Jesus was a full participant in his faith tradition, and he must have had a number of problems (like this one) with the attitudes of his brothers and sisters in faith – but, he persisted in worshipping with them on the Sabbath. He understood the imperfection of human beings and stayed with them. He was driven out, but he did not abandon them – he even begged forgiveness for them as he died. It is a great temptation to quit. It is a natural inclination to look for an excuse to put down the cross. The lesson we all must confront is defeating the expectation that everything should happen without problems or conflict. There is no virtue in this, no divine love – what divine love can be claimed when we love those who only are our friends and family? Who see things our way? To belong to Christ we need to love human beings, even in their error and with their faults; to belong to Christ is to radically give in love for him and each other – this is the way back to him. This scene follows directly from last week’s reading where Jesus reads from the scroll and pronounces it fulfilled in their hearing. But neither of them were

from among the people of Israel. Please note: During the flu season, please use your discretion when offering or accepting handshakes. It is perfectly ac-ceptable to offer another sign of peace rather than shaking hands, such as a bow of the head or simply saying “Peace be with you” without any gesture. Please also know that during Communion, it is acceptable to refrain from taking the cup and to take only the host. Communion is still complete if taken in one form. Finally, if you are feeling ill, please understand that you are not obligated to come to Mass.

Jeremiah declares that the Lord knew him before he was born, and dedicated and appointed him to his role as prophet even before he drew breath. We, too, are known and sent by the Lord. What deeds of love and service are mine to perform?

Sharing the Gospel If Jesus lived next door to you, you might not believe in him. People who lived in his hometown did not be-lieve that Jesus could heal. Everyone said, "He's just a carpenter's son, he can not heal." Jesus did not expect everybody to like him. Jesus chose to follow God's plan, no matter what other people said. He left his hometown to go where people be-lieved in him. Even though some people did not believe in him, or even wanted to hurt Jesus, he always spoke the truth. He always did what was right, no matter what.

Prayer Dear God, help me to keep on doing what you want, no matter what other people say.

Congratulations and welcome to the faith!

On Monday, February 11 and Tuesday, February 12, we will be hosting overview ses-sions for those families wishing to pursue First Penance and First Eucharist in the coming months. These sessions will be held in Dougherty Hall from 6:30pm—7:30pm and reg-istration forms will be available at each of the gatherings. Families should choose whichever evening works better in their schedule. It is rec-ommended that children preparing for these sacraments join their parents for these overview sessions. Children who have attended our par-ish school or faith formation sessions last year and this current year are eligible to participate. It is not necessary to sign up in advance to at-tend these overview sessions.

Public Policy Information—Catholics Speak Out for Justice: Equal Rights for Farmworkers Next week you’ll have the opportunity to sign our diocese-wide Public Policy Weekend petition in support of farm-workers. It will read: The labor of tens of thousands of farmworkers brings food to our tables. However, New York State labor law categorically denies farmworkers basic rights and protections enjoyed by virtually all other work-ers. These exclusions mean that, unlike other workers, farmworkers do not have the right to: a guaranteed day of rest per week; overtime pay; employer contributions to disa-bility insurance; public health protections including sanita-tion and housing standards; or protections while bargaining collectively. Farming is a vital part of the New York State economy. Economic policies that protect family farms are essential. We urge the legislature to support New York State farmers along with farmworkers. We believe that the sacred human dignity of every man, woman, and child, without exception, should be respected and that the basic rights of all workers should be recognized. Therefore, we urge the New York State Assembly, Senate, and Governor Cuomo to support the Farmworkers Fair La-bor Practices Act ending the exclusion of farmworkers from basic rights and granting them equal treatment under our labor laws.

We just never think about some life events unless or until they happen to us… things like:

...after the last child honks the horn, waves, and drives away—and the

house suddenly seems empty. ...after the gavel comes down,

the handcuffs go on, and your loved one is led away.

...after the baby arrives, demanding more of you

than you ever dreamed possible. ...after you find a pink slip with your

final paycheck. ...after your family and friends have

heard your story one too many times, but you still need to talk it out.

But when such events do happen to us, we need a support system to help us through these hard times. St. Benedict Parish has developed a Stephen Ministry; 26 parishioners have been trained to work with people facing such crises in life. No one—including YOU—should have to face any of these situations by yourself. Contact Deacon Claude to learn more about Stephen Ministry.

You are not alone. We are here to journey with you.

Want a Pew? As you are aware, we are replacing the pews at St. Mary’s Church during phase two of our renovations in a few months. If you are interested in one of the current pews, you are in luck! We cannot sell them, but will accept donations, and you can pick out the pew you’d like after any of the Masses at St. Mary’s THIS weekend. Meet Amy, our Director of Communications/Parish Life Coordinator, at the end of Mass at the front of the Church so that you can claim your pew! If you’re interested, we can supply you with the name of a carpenter willing to cut down the pews to any desired length for a reasonable fee.

KnightLine Knights of Columbus Council 1445 held their an-nual free throw basketball championship on Janu-ary 16, 2019 at St. Mary’s School Gym. Trophies

Nine Year Old Champion: Rowen Lyon Ten Year Old Champion: Xavier Payne Eleven Year Old Champion: Connor Kelly Twelve Year Old Champion: Daniel Urlacher Thirteen Year Old Champion: Michael Macri

Each of the winners will compete in the district competi-tion with an eye toward moving on to the state and interna-tional level. If you would like more information about the Knights of Columbus, please contact Jeff Gelinas at (585) 393-1852.
