School Operating Hours

The school is open to accept students from 8.30am each weekday morning and students need to leave as soon as practicable after the finish of the last lesson of the day. For primary students this is 2.50pm and for secondary students this is 3.15pm. The only students who should be on site after these times are students catching a bus.

In the morning primary students are supervised in the Primary COLA by a staff member and students must remain in this area. For secondary students, they need to remain within the school grounds and are not allowed on either the basketball court or the oval before school. There is no direct supervision of secondary students as the NSW Teachers Federation believes it is not necessary and has indicated to staff that this duty can only be done by volunteers. Currently four of the five Head Teachers have volunteered to rove from 8.30 in the morning to provide some supervision. As such there may be times when no teacher is available to directly supervise secondary students before classes begin.

NSW Adolescent Vaccination Program 2011

Information for Parents/Guardians Y7 & Y10 students

Each year NSW Health offers the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school-based program. In 2011 the following vaccines will be offered: Hepatitis B and varicella (chickenpox) vaccines will be offered in a catch-up program for all Y7 students who have NOT previously received 3 doses of Hepatitis B vaccine when they were a baby or had chickenpox, the disease.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine will be offered to Y7 girls only as a 3-dose course over a six month period.

Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough) will be offered as one injection to all Y10 students.

Parent information kits have been sent home. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parent/caregivers are advised to read all the information provided, complete the consent form and return it to the school. Parent/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the Principal. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au.

Please note that for HPV vaccine only, parent/guardians are requested to record their Medicare number (all 10 digits and the 11th number beside the child's name) on the consent form as this is required to record the student's health information on the National HPV Vaccination Register and link to the National or State Cervical Screen program. A record of each vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at the clinic.

Parent/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and a copy is provided to your GP. Parents should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination. If this record of vaccination card is lost a replacement certificate is available from the Health Service for $30.

Parents are asked to include a note if their child is needle phobic or faints when given injections.

The timetable for the vaccinations can be found further in this newsletter. If a child misses an injection from the Community Health Team they must complete the course of injections with their family doctor as no ‘catch up’ vaccines are provided.

Further information regarding immunization is available at www.health.nsw.gov.au or you can contact Deb Gilbert (Head Teacher Welfare) here at school.

This week Middle School students will be working on their rich cross curricular task to survey the impact of the bypass on Bulahdelah and promote Bulahdelah as a tourist destination. Mrs. McDonald has put a great deal of effort into organising some stimulating and community focussed activities to help raise students’ awareness and give them plenty of material to present in their final products. The next stage of the Digital Education Revolution (DER) has commenced with our Year 9 parents and students attending an information evening about the new laptops last week. Mr. Wade has commenced handing out the new laptops to Year 9 students this week. Any parents who did not get to last week’s information session are reminded that there will be another session at school on Thursday 10th March at 2 pm. If you still are not able to get to either meeting please contact the school to organise an alternative time. Last week students were able to use the new library for the first time and senior students were making good use of the new facilities available to study and catch up on their work. Mr. Belic has organised a number of supervised study sessions for Year 12 to help them with their progress towards their HSC. There are also opportunities for students to participate in after school tutoring on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Please encourage your child to take the opportunities available to assist with their studies. A large number of lunch passes have been issued to local students this term to go home for lunch. I am concerned some students may be abusing the rules in regards to lunch passes by going to the petrol stations on the highway and not going directly home to lunch. Please ensure your child uses lunch passes only to go home for food or it may result in students having their lunch pass suspended. Lastly I would urge everyone to support our two Year 8 students, Ryan Howarth and Jaxon Harris, who have volunteered to have their heads shaved to raise money for cancer research.

- Roger Horton, Secondary Deputy.

We had two students qualify for the zone swimming carnival last week. Tara Price and Madison Shannon participated in a number of events. We congratulate them on their efforts and enthusiasm!!! Well done girls!! Our Middle School students have been working on an integrated unit of work focusing on the impact of the bypass on the local area. All students have been involved in workshop sessions presented by representatives from the RTA, forestry, local police and the chamber of commerce. The information gained from these sessions will assist the students complete their digital media assessment task. An excursion of the local area has been arranged for the students to see first hand the impact on the local economy, wildlife, landscape and waterways. This “rich task” has enabled the students to engage in their learning in a variety of ways. I would like to thank Mrs McDonald for the many hours spent coordinating these exciting learning experiences!! She has been enthusiastically supported by the staff of the middle school students. This is an example of what can be achieved when staff work as a team to promote the values of Participation, Innovation and Excellence. I am very excited about this project and I am keen to see the fruits of the students’ labour when they present their research findings, to a panel of expert judges, at the end of the term!!!! Keep up the great work everyone!!!! Four staff members are taking short periods of Long Service Leave towards the end of the term. Every effort has been made to ensure that the students’ learning will not be interrupted. I will be on leave from 15th to 29th March inclusive. Mr Backhouse will replace me during my absence. I would like to remind parents that children must be collected from under the COLA at the end of the school day. Please do not ask your child/ren to meet you at the front of the school. All staff have a duty of care to all students and, as such, students must be supervised until they are in the care of their parents or on the school bus. We cannot supervise students waiting at the front of the school. We thank you for your anticipated cooperation in this matter!! SECONDARY SWIMMING CARNIVAL RESULTS

The annual Swimming Carnival was held on 16th February in inclement weather, starting with clouds and drizzle, and ending with heat and then blistering heat. The Melba mascot, Dame Heather Moncrieff (see photo left) helped her team over the line by encouraging students to enter the races. Her efforts and cheering, and the enthusiastic Melba swimmers, were responsible for winning their first carnival in 11 years. Well done, Melba. Mr. Holt and Miss Cunich, our announcers for the day, begged and pleaded with competitors to get in and have a go. Mitch

Blanch gave his best all day helping teachers to put away gear, to the extent of telling a few teachers just how to put down the SRC shelter. Thanks Mitch! Of course a highlight of the day was The Belly Flop Competition with the overall winners being Jamii “The Walrus” Patterson-Carrol and Ray “Red as in OUCH!” Thoroughgood. A great day was had by all; winners were grinners and it just goes to show what can be achieved when we take the time and effort to participate. Age Champions: 17 Mitch Markham, Hayley Foley; 16 Alex Barry,Jennifer Trott-Fenton; 15 Bradley Kirkpatrick, Utah Edgerton; 14 Adam Crampton, Tayla Cook; 13 Ben Eadie, Hannah Rietveld; 12 Emily Kirkpatrick / Haley Byrnes House Placings: Melba 825; Wentworth 744; Bradman 635; Kenny 560

Bulahdelah Central School took delivery of its brand new school bus at the end of November, 2006. The P & C Association Inc. members had made a successful application on behalf of the school for funding of approximately $97,000 via the Australian Government’s Program, Investing in our Schools. In addition to the Federal Government and Federal Member for Paterson, Mr. Bob Baldwin, a small group of workers also deserve special mention for the procurement of this asset. Mr. Mike Stace, Head Teacher Science, played a significant role from the beginning, sourcing quotes and model selection. Former P & C Assoc. Inc. presidents Mr. John Ireland and Mrs. Sue Backhouse were tireless in their efforts while parent representative Mr. Lloyd Aquilina significantly assisted in the negotiations

and garaging designs. These folk are to be congratulated for their efforts on behalf of the school and students in securing such a valuable asset. This bus enhances the opportunity for staff to take students on a wide variety of learning experiences that either previously would have been at a much increased cost or would not have been accessible.. With the signage reading, “Bulahdelah Central School going places” the bus is a positive image to promote our school. The bus, together with its accompanying trailer, is now a familiar sight around the district.
