Bet You Didn’t Know!

“Badges?... We don’t need no... stinkin’ badges!” is one of the most frequently quoted, misquoted, and parodied movie quotations in history! The original movie quotation comes from the 1948 fi lm ‘The Treasure of the Sierra Madre’. The Monkees drummer Micky Dolenz says the lines in the TV episode “It’s A Nice Place To Visit,” which aired on September 11, 1967, and the 1974 comedy movie ‘Blazing Saddles’ used it again!

Silver Screen Scoop!

By Joseph J. Airdo

“The Green Hornet” will not hit theaters until January but screen-writer Evan Goldberg says that he has already mapped out a sequel. Director Michel Gondry confi rmed this but noted that its fruition all depends on the fi rst entry’s box offi ce.

“Live Free or Die Hard” director Len Wiseman is in fi nal negotiations to helm a contemporary remake of the 1990 sci-fi action fi lm “Total Re-call,” based on Philip K. Dick’s 1966 novelette “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.”

Image Entertainment has formed a pact with New Films International to exclusively distribute the production company’s theatrical titles, including “Chain Letter,” a potentially terrify-ing horror fl ick starring “The Twilight Saga’s” Nikki Reed.

Be among the fi rst to get the latest scoop from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner.com/Phoenix.

‘Gone With the Pope’, a view of a time long gone…

Stan Robinson: While in fi lm school in the 70’s, we as students were aware of the ‘Underground’ fi lm communities throughout major cities in the US. ‘Gone With the Pope’ gives a refl ection of one of the LA/Las Vegas - West Coast underground fi lm-makers. The term ‘underground’ is the true use of the term ‘independent fi lm’, made with private money and outside of the studio system, which means, no censors or ‘suits’ to dictate content!

The main plot of ‘Gone With the Pope’, Duke Mitchell directs and stars as an ex-con who has a plan to kidnap the Pope in exchange for the ransom of “a dollar from every Catholic in the world.” Along with the main theme, nothing is safe or sacred ground including race, religion, politics, or sexuality!

With many underground fi lms, money

was an issue. Mitchell started shoot-ing in 1975 and with his death in 1981, the movie was ‘in the can’ as we fi lmmakers call it, fi lmed but not yet edited, and there it stayed. Oscar® Winner Bob Murawski, Best Film Editing for ‘The Hurt Locker’ (2010), spent the last 15 years in his spare time editing ‘Gone With the Pope’ in between assignments on the movies ‘Spiderman 1, 2, and 3’, ‘Drag Me to Hell’, and ‘The Hurt Locker’.

If you have any sensitivities on race, religion, politics, or sexuality, ‘Gone With the Pope’ just could be that ‘magic tonic’ to help one ‘get over them’!

Randy Montgomery: The new fi lm Gone With the Pope really isn’t a new release at all. In fact, it’s over thirty years old. While I personally have noticed more grey hair, a few extra pounds and a wardrobe change over my three decades on this planet, real changes have come in society and landscape, which can be evidenced in this late 1970’s exploitation fl ick. The plot; a mobster and his cronies

kidnap the pope. Yeah, yeah… no one cares. The real attraction to this fi lm is the comedy (which comes at the expense of nearly every race, sex and size of people) and the surprisingly thought-provoking message about life and religion. You will be utterly shocked by the racist nature of some scenes, but today, one can laugh it off as a time gone by. What will stick in your memory though is a sequence involving an actress credited only as “Fat Woman.” For sheer entertain-ment value, this restored and newly released “classic” would get an A. Had it been released decades ago and being reviewed on DVD, it would probably garner a D. Seeing footage from “old Vegas” and freeways that do not exist anymore in Los Angeles is an added bonus.

Starring Bill Boyd, John Bruno, Carl Cocomo, Lorenzo Dardado, Paul DiAmico, Steve DiBiaso, Nola Hand, Jeanne Hibbard, Jim LoBianco, Peter Milo, Duke Mitchell, Jeffrey Mitchell, Zep Mizner, John Murgia, Giorgio Tavolieri, and Joe Virzi.

You Must-See These Kisses

By Randy Montgomery

At fi rst glance, the Irish fi lm Kisses feels as if it could use a bit more in the way of the plot department. But, once you get sucked in by the perfor-mances of the fi lm’s two young stars, you realize that an intricate storyline isn’t important. The movie is about the abuse the two children endure and why they decided to run away and spend the night on the streets of Dub-lin. When each of their trouble home lives come to a boiling point, Kylie and Dylan (Kelly O’Neil and Shane Curry), who are both friends and neighbors, decide to fl ee. We see some the abuse the duo endure leading up to their ad-venture and learn more about them as the evening progresses. Neither one of these protagonists had any other feature length acting credits prior to this, yet their performances are noth-ing short of amazing. Their genuine emotion, combined with a surpris-ingly fi tting Bob Dylan soundtrack and black and white photography makes Kisses a deeply moving, likable independent gem that will win over, yet break the hearts of all who watch it. “I have nothing to give but kisses.” Wow. What a line. What a fi lm. Grade: A`

“My cousin had ham. I’ve never been to a restaurant that has ham off the bone!”

“They told us the gravy for the biscuits is made at 5am so of course we had to try. ”

“The couple next to us had a huge pancake. An apple one!”

“Thank you for coming to Scottsdale!!”

“We have found our Joynt!”

“We ended up all the way across town so I looked for something in the area. Wonderful friendly service and tasty food!”

This is our story…By David Phelps, Owner of the Breakfast Joynt

“It was time for classic, homemade and fl avorful comfort food. My cooking roots stem from my Mom who taught me how to cook at an early age and then tran-scended to working side by side with a great Chicago Chef who taught me that simple basic foods could be fl avorful and fresh. More importantly, was our atten-tion to customer service! Coming to the “Joynt” is not too far off from coming to my home. Our guests are treated like family and we’ve kept our prices as low as we can to keep them coming back.” AZ Weekly proudly supports entrepre-neurs who produce a great product and work long hours doing it. Do yourself a favor and enjoy a nice breakfast at The Breakfast Joynt in North Scottsdale (Raintree and Northsight) soon.

The Best Beers You Can’t Drink (at least not in Arizona)Being a big time beer journalist has its perks. Breweries from all over the world are constantly sending pack-ages to the AZ Weekly offi ces in the hope that after trying them, I will write about them in an article, thereby en-suring immeasurable success for their product. The only problem is, I never seem to get these beers. I am pretty certain that the guys in the DINE! sec-tion, or maybe the folks over at MILL! are the ones taking them. It has got to be the DINE! guys… they know how good beer and good food go together. I don’t think it’s the publisher, he seems like a nice guy and he would at least offer to share the beer. Regardless, there seems to be a lot of beer that I thought I was getting that I don’t get. I guess that’s true for all of you as well. With all the amazing beers available in Arizona, there are still some that everybody seems to want and we just don’t get to drink.

One of the most requested beers is Yuengling. This Pottsville, Pennsyl-vania brewery bills itself as America’s Oldest Brewery, and given its continu-

ous operation since 1829, they seem to be correct. Their fl agship beer is Yuengling Traditional Lager which has a subtle malt sweetness with a hint of hops. It is so well known in the Philadelphia area, most people simply order a lager and receive it. While not a craft brewery (it is one of the fi ve largest breweries in the country), craft enthusiasts do enjoy their beers, and for many area natives who have moved away, it is the fi rst beer they look for upon a return visit. They also can be credited for the fi rst bottled Black and Tan in 1986.

The other beers that we don’t currently

get here are defi nitely in the craft category. Russian River is at the top of that list. Located in Santa Rosa, California, this brewery runs parallel paths, producing some incredible IPAs as well as some of the best Belgian style beers around. Pliny the Elder, Continued on Page 25...

Draft Beer

named for the 1st Century Roman au-thor and Philosopher, is considered to be the fi rst Double IPA and is recog-nized as one of the best. The Belgian series, many of them barrel aged and at least partially fermented with the wild yeast Brettanomyces, consists of Damnation, Supplication, Tempta-tion and a variety of others with the same naming pattern. Brewmaster Vinnie Cirluzo even got around to brewing the long awaited Procrasti-nation to the shock of Russian River regulars.

Many East Coast craft beers don’t make it to Arizona due to the distance and expense involved in ship-ping. Two that Arizonans have been patiently waiting for are Brooklyn Brew-ing and Victory. Brooklyn Brewing, located appropriately enough in Brook-lyn, is known for making uncommonly good food beers and Brewmaster Garrett Oliver is considered by most to be the foremost authority on food and beer pairing in the country. His beer dinners are legendary and ac-complished chefs defer to his expertise when planning menus for these events. Lately the series of big bottle beers including Local One and Local Two, as well as Black Ops, have been exciting our fellow beer drinkers in the east. Victory Brewing is located in Down-ingtown, PA and produces one of the best American made Pilsners in the Prima Pils, they also make Hop Devil IPA as well as the very dangerous Golden Monkey Belgian Triple. At 8% alcohol by volume and incredibly smooth, Golden Monkey can sneak up on you.

New Glarus Brewing in Wisconsin produces some very sought after beers. Their line at the Great American Beer Festival is always one of the longest. Despite being distributed exclusively in their home state, they are still one of the twenty largest craft breweries in the country. Spotted Cow, a farm-house style ale, Wisconsin Belgian Red, Raspberry Tart and their Un-plugged series are particularly large

selling products for them. No craft beer lover can go to Wisconsin without bringing back some New Glarus. Bou-levard Brewing, from Kansas City is also a high demand beer. Bully Porter and the Smokestack series are just a few of the beers they make that are asked for regularly.

If you head west, past California to Hawaii, and the island of Maui, you will fi nd Maui Brewing. This brewery has rapidly become one of the most sought after breweries everywhere. Besides making great beer, an appear-ance on the Thirsty Traveler television show didn’t hurt. Their original plan was to expand to Southern California and then stretch east from there. One problem…their beer has exploded in California and demand in that state has taken up all the production that doesn’t stay in Hawaii. They are un-dergoing their third expansion in just a few years, so hopefully someday we will be able to enjoy the Bikini Blonde, Big Swell IPA and the much desired Coconut Porter. If you attend GABF in Denver this year, look for Black Pearl which is the porter aged in rum barrels.

This is just a small sampling of some of the great beers out there that we don’t see in Arizona yet. There is Harpoon, Founders, Sweetwater, Cigar City, Captain Lawrence, Southern Tier and many more. Two things to remember…after a long wait Arizona is now able to drink Bell’s Beers from Michigan, and we get Oberon year round where other states only get it in the summer;

and New Belgium isn’t available in many states in the east, while we get everything from Fat Tire to the Lips of Faith Series. So it’s not all bad for Arizona. Enjoy the beers we have, seek out other great beers when you travel, and always keep an eye out for the next great beer to hit the shelves. Now I have to go fi nd out where they are keeping all those great beers I am being sent to review…I know they are around here somewhere.

There are a lot of young guns these daysstrutting their games in the world of golf, players such as Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler,

Dustin Johnson and Ryo Ishikawa, to namejust a few.Justin Rose used to be where they are now,

and if he could tell them one thing about theroad ahead, it might be this: focus on yourgame and your love of golf, and don’t worryabout what others expect of you.

The expectations shot through the roof forRose at the 1998 British Open, where theEnglishman wowed the locals with a fourth-place finish as a 17-year-old amateur. He turnedpro days after ... and proceeded to miss the cutin his next 21 tournaments, a stark reminderif there ever was one of how fickle the gameof golf can be.

Rose finally earned his first EuropeanTour victory in 2002, and he’s addedthree more since, including his last at the2006 Australian Masters. But thesuccesses have been skewed somewhatby those pesky expectations – shouldn’tthere be more trophies in the case?

Joe “Diesel” Riggs, Women’s Tournament and Ryan Couture, Highlight Historic STRIKEFORCE Challengers event in PhoenixBy Joshua Molina

The hometown boy goes to war in front of his local fans, four of the fi ercest women in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) will collide, and a legend’s son will make his profes-sional debut in a historic STRIKEFORCE Challengers event on Friday, Aug. 13, at Dodge Theatre in Phoenix.

In the night’s main event, hometown hero and MMA star Joe “Diesel” Riggs, a native of Phoenix who wrestled at Cactus High School in Glendale, will look to continue his successful run in the STRIKEFORCE cage when he takes on hard-hitting Louis “Handgunz” Taylor at a catch weight of 182 pounds.

The intrigu-ing match-up pits the more-experienced, well-rounded Riggs (32-11), a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and freestyle boxing against Tay-lor (6-1), who brings ferocity and danger-ous knockout power to the matchup.

Of his 32 wins, Riggs has won 15 by knock-out and 14 by submission. Only three of his victories have been decisions. Taylor has knocked out four of his opponents and submitted, one other.

With both fi ghters possessing the ability to end the fi nd in a blink of an eye, and a Riggs-partisan, electric crowd expected to back the Dodge Theatre, the STRIKE-

FORCE Challengers main event is expected to be a dramatic and explosive encounter.

Riggs, who holds victories over STRIKE-FORCE Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz, and UFC’s Chris Lytle and “The NY Badass” Phil Baroni, is looking to bounce back from a close decision loss at STRIKE-FORCE: Miami, in January against Jay Hieron. Prior to that, Riggs dominated his opposition in four consecutive wins.

The extremely well-conditioned Riggs has displayed success in multiple divisions. In his eight-year career, the 27-year-old has been victorious in the heavyweight, light heavyweight, middleweight and welter-weight divisions.

Taylor knocked out his last two opponents and is set on extending his winning streak on Aug. 13. A win for either fi ghter could

put him in line for a middle-weight (185 pounds) title shot.

But before Riggs and Taylor lockup,

four of mixed martial arts’ most exciting athletes in the women’s welterweight (135 pounds) division will battle inside the cage in the fi rst STRIKEFORCE women’s tournament in history.

Miesha “Takedown” Tate, Carina “Beauty But the Beast,” Damm, Hitomi “Girlfi ght Monster” Akano and Maiju Kujala will compete in the single-elimination tourna-ment that will be completed over the course of the evening.

The tournament draw will be determined at the offi cial fi ghter weigh-in, which will be open to the public, free of charge at Dodge Theatre at 5 p.m. on Thursday,

Aug. 12, one day before the fi ght card.

Each of the three fi ghts will consist of three, three-minute rounds. Fighting once in one night is tough and twice is brutal. But the tournament will defi nitely highlight the women’s ability to endure a grueling night of combat.

Highlighting the show is Tate, 23, who humbled Zoila “The Warrior Princess” Frausto, in a personal grudge match, with an armbar victory in March at the STRIKE-FORCE Challengers event on SHOWTIME at Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif.

Tate, who wrestled on her boys’ high school team in Washington, has become

one of the new faces of women’s MMA.

Tate could face Carina Damm, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert with model looks, who has amassed a 10-fi ght winning streak. Damm is the sister of STRIKEFORCE veteran Rodrigo Damm.

The Brazilian media refers to Damm as “Barbie Girl,” but she’s no doll in the ring. A master at submission wrestling and striking, she needed only 11 seconds to obliterate Lashonda Knos with a knee in 2008, one month after she submitted Sophie Bagherdai with an armbar submis-sion.

Also in the tournament is the Japanese Akano, a tough, former champion in Japan’s Smackgirl promotion. Akano is coming off an impressive effort against STRIKEFORCE Women’s Middleweight (145 pounds) Champion, Cris Cyborg, also the No. 1 female fi ghter in the world.

Akano showed tremendous valor in the fi ght with Cyborg, moving up from her normal weight of 135 pounds. She took

Santos into the third round before she was stopped by a knockout. It could be a short night for any of Akano’s opponents.

Of Akano’s 22 victories, 15 have come by submission.

Finland-native Kujala, 4-1, may have the advantage on fi ght night. She won a single-elimination tournament in the Netherlands on March 27. She stopped Akvile Vitkauskaite with a rear naked choke in the fi rst round and then won the tournament with a unanimous decision over Titiana van Polanen.

Kujala has won her last three fi ghts.

The winner of the tournament will receive the opportunity to challenge for the STRIKEFORCE welterweight champion-ship held by undefeated power puncher Sarah Kaufman.

The historic card also features the debut of Ryan Couture, son of MMA legend Randy "The Natural" Couture. The 27-year-old Couture will face local fi ghter Lucas Stark of Chandler, Ariz. in a three-round lightweight bout.

If Ryan Couture is anything like his father, his pro debut is sure to be full of thrills. As an amateur he compiled a 5-1-1 record, with all of his wins by submission. He began MMA training in 2006, specializes in Muay Thai and submission wrestling.

The event will be televised on SHOW-TIME® at 11 p.m. ET (delayed on the west coast) on Aug. 13.

“Our friends at Rage in the Cage have been telling us for quite a while that we should bring a fight to Arizona,” said Scott Coker, CEO of Strikeforce. “Everything finally came together and we’re excited about our first Arizona fight.”

A Night with the Artists Fri Aug 6th Sometimes it is hard to get inspired to do anything really. There is cre-ativity all around you, yet you cannot seem to get it out of yourself to produce anything worthwhile. This does not only pertain to artists but to everyone, whether you’re a painter or ride a trick bike. At times like this, the best thing to do is to surround yourself with those that ARE in-spired. After all, Psych 101 tells us moods are contagious. This is where “A Night with the Artists” comes into play. This is a FREE event hosted by Terpsicore, a modern ballet dance company. What you will see are dance performances from Terpsicore as well as the Conder and Stilo danc-ers. Paintings in varying mediums, metal sculptures, photography, Op-era singing and even graffi ti art will be displayed by professional artists. Therefore, it is time to get out of your fl unk, get out on the town and in-vigorate yourself! VIP tickets are also available for purchase and include seats, hors d’oeuvres and 2 cocktails! Doors open 7pm, 2nd show at 9:30pm at the Madison Event Center. www.TerpsicoreDance.org 602-690-9594

Chicks with Picks Fri Aug 6th It started out as a small outlet for the valley’s female talent. It turned into concerts, showcases and 75 performing artists. The women that perform here are true up and coming talent whether they play acoustic, electric or are a full band. The singers I had a chance to hear impressed me enough to Myspace them - songs I’m ready to download now! Chicks with Picks perform all over the valley and their next show is at Desert Ridge Market Place, the outdoor shopping center located in North Phoenix. This is a free show and a great way to open yourself up to new music be-

cause we all know that our “favorite” radio song is quickly starting to cross the border to annoying. The show starts at 7pm!http://www.azchickswithpicks.com

Beach Party Ra Sushi Ahwatukee Sat Aug 7th Aah yes the beach… wish you were there? Me too. How about a party that at least puts your mind in that carefree zone? Ra Sushi Ahwatukee is throwing a beach bash to promote their new Saturday nights featuring DJ Jamie G. Now what’s that you say? You had a hard day at work? I bet it would be all better with a $6 Midori Margarita in your hand and a fi re throwing hula dancer at your side. How about getting real crazy and throwing in one of the many tasty sushi specials like a $8 Mango Lobster Roll or a King crab, avocado Monsoon Roll? The choices keep going as do the exotic drink spe-cials. And I was not kidding about that hula dancer, at 8, 9 and 10pm be entertained by some Polynesian dance action. And of course nothing is more memorable than watching or participating in a limbo contest post Kamikaze shots. Priceless. It’s time to let yourself go, unwind and hit the beach!480-940-1111 7 p.m. to 1 a.m

GREEN DAY HITS THE ROAD FOR SECOND LEGOF NORTH AMERICAN TOURTour Hits Phoenix August 30, 2010 at Cricket Wireless PavilionAfter wrapping up a sold-out stadium tour of Europe, multi-platinum rock band Green Day will hit the road for a series of North American tour dates, including an August 30th stopover here in Phoenix at Cricket Wireless Pavilion. This is the second leg of the band’s U.S. tour in support of their Grammy Award winning album 21st Century Breakdown. Critics raved about the fi rst leg of the 21st Century Breakdown tour, which launched in North America in July of 2009, before continuing on to Europe in the fall. “As if releasing a wave of energy that had been building up dur-ing their four-year hiatus from tour-ing, Green Day poured all their heart and soul into a powerhouse two-hour set,” said Rolling Stone , while Spin noted that “the band’s relationship

with its audience is disarmingly real, a cross-generational give-and-take that’s as punk as any Gilman Street scroungers today.” Released by Reprise Records on May 15th, 2009, 21st Century Breakdown debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, as well as on the Rock, Ac-tive Rock, and Alternative charts. The album has spawned two hit singles, “Know Your Enemy,” which has been certifi ed gold, and the platinum-sell-ing “21 Guns,” whose video won three 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, in-cluding “Best Rock Video.” The band took home their second American Music Award for “Favorite Alterna-tive Music Artist” in November. Green Day Rock Band has been nominated for a Teen Choice Award for Best Video Game.

Flynnville TrainRedemptionNext Evolution

Are you ready for a new band that picks up where Lynyrd Skynyrd left off? One look at the long-haired dudes in Flynnville Train and you might think that’s what you’re getting. These guys are nowhere near as rowdy as Skynyrd was but they are one of the best bands building on the mighty south-ern rock/country rock mantle. Fans of con-temporary country will hear familiar sounds right off the bat as Redemption opens with a “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” vibe with “Home” before moving into a Marshall Tucker

Band/Montgomery Gentry mash-up for “Preachin’ to the Choir.” “Alright” sounds a lot like “Keep Your Hands to Yourself,” the one hit from the Geor-gia Satellites---no wonder since head sputnik Dan Baird wrote the song and guests on the cut too. The beer-drink-ing anthem “Tip a Can” is probably the best overall song on Redemption; all four band members had a hand in writing the frothy Dwight Yoakam-style sing-along.

Reggae Gold 2010VPIf it’s been awhile since you’ve added any new reggae music to your collec-tion here’s a chance to get yourself feelin’ irie in no time. VP Records pretty much has a lock on “happen-ing” reggae and dancehall artists. This various art-ist’s compilation presents current hits from hot acts like Gyptian, Busy Signal, Ding Dong, Etana and Vybz Kar-tel. Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley checks in with “As We Enter,” his collaboration with Nas, while Shaggy contrib-utes “Never Let Me Go” and Sean Paul brings the original version of his “Hold My

Hand.” Konshens, Beres Hammond and Michael Franti & Spearhead are some of the other artists represent-ing and there’s even a second disc featuring a mix by Jamaican deejay ZJ Chrome included. So everything you need is here except the cold Red Stripe.

Lady JasmineCigar DivaQUICK CURE FOR A TIGHT CIGARIs your cigar a little too tight darling? First, simply squeeze and massage it; many times this will loosen the bunch enough to fi x the problem. But if that doesn’t work, go for the gusto and use a skewer or ice pick to simply poke a hole through its length. Most often, this is quite the simple cure. Word of warning though dear: Be sure to do so before you light it. And always be very careful. Then Whaa La! Kick back. Relax and enjoy!

Those are then presented in fully produced, dramaticperformances for the judges – designer Derek J, celebritystylist Lindsay Albanese and a rotating guest judge – whowill ultimately decide which stylist walks away withcoiffure bragging rights and $100,000.
