What is Stress? It is a feeling of being unable to cope with anxiety, discomfort and the demands of a particular situation.

The term stress is used in at least two contexts. In the first place it refers to the minor experience of:

1) A feeling of being unable to cope with the demands of a particular situation.

2) Anxiety, discomfort, apprehension because of the inability to cope.

Secondly the term stress can also be used to denote the factors which cause the above reactions.

Stress is a powerful force which can either do a lot of good or cause extensive harm. One more important

fact I would like to mention here is that stress is mental i.e. it is always in our minds. Stress starts in the

head.

Stress is harmful and it hurts when you make it a way of life. The long term effect of stress has been

linked to heart disease, ulcers and cancer.

Stress has become a part of life or most people who work. . Everyone has to experience stress sometime

or the other. Therefore, it would be better if we equip ourselves to handle it better.

All executives experience stress, severe or mild and while they do not admit it openly, they show it in anycase by becoming irritated or withdrawn, or by showing some other ailments. And when this happens,

their job performance suffers and they do become less capable of performing the job assigned to them.

What is job stress?

Of all the stressors working in an individual’s life, job stress is one of the

leading causes of stress.

Workplace has become a source of extreme stress as a result of technological changes, mass

retrenchments, mergers and acquisitions, information overload, demand for more productivity,

fierce competition, and uncertain future.

When your parents joined their jobs, they did so with great certainty: that they will one day retire doing

the same kind of work, and probably from the same place. Today’s generation is not that lucky. Even if

you have been trained for long number of years to be experts in an area, you cannot

What Can I Do To Manage My Stress?

• The first step is to learn to recognize when you're feeling stressed. Early warning signs of

stress include tension in your shoulders and neck, or clenching your hands into fists.

• The next step is to choose a way to deal with your stress. One way is to avoid the event

or thing that leads to your stress--but often this is not possible. A second way is to

change how you react to stress. This is often the best way.

Tips for Dealing with Stress

• Don't worry about things you can't control, such as the weather.

• Prepare to the best of your ability for events you know may be stressful, such as a job

interview.

• Try to look at change as a positive challenge, not as a threat.

• Work to resolve conflicts with other people.

• Talk with a trusted friend, family member or counselor.

• Set realistic goals at home and at work.• Exercise on a regular basis.

• Eat well-balanced meals and get enough sleep.

• Meditate.

• Participate in something you don't find stressful, such as sports, social events or hobbies.

TYPES OF STRESS

Every one of us would probably experience different types of stress at one time or another. It

could be some personal stress arising in the work place, strained family relationships withteenage children, emotional stress caused by financial problems, post traumatic disorders after an

unhappy event like an accident or even feeling stress when you are on holiday!

All these various types of stress and many more, can however be group into four main types of

stress.

1. Good stress OR Eustress

Usually when people discuss stress, they are talking about bad stress. Good stress (also called

"eustress") can get your blood flowing and help you through situations when you need an extra push. An example of this is the extra strength and anxiety you may feel before a big presentation

or meeting. The anxiety and excitement of it can be beneficial to help you accomplish the things

you need to accomplish in work and in many other parts of your life.

• The thrill and excited feeling while watching a horror movie

• The feeling of excitement when you won a game or race

• The excitement when you bought your first car

• The accomplishment of a challenge

• The proud feeling of being a first time parent

• The excitement of going for a holiday

These feelings sure make us feel good and they are the so-called "good stress" or "positivestress". They are able to exert a healthy effect on you. It gives one a feeling of fulfillment or

contentment and also makes one excited about life. Unfortunately, it is a type of stress that onlyoccurs for a short period of time. Eustress is also often called the curative stress because it gives

a person the ability to generate the best performance or maximum output.

2. Bad stress OR Distress

SRM BUSINESS SCHOOL Page 17

Page 18: Stress Management in the Workplace 2003

We all experience both types. For obvious reasons, we wouldn't want to eliminate the good, and

it's nearly impossible to completely eliminate the bad (also known as "dis-stress"). But it is morethan possible to get a handle on the bad stress and live a very happy, less-stressful life.

Like good stress, bad stress is also a physical and emotional feeling and reaction caused by many

different events or changes (real or imagined) in our lives. However, gone untreated, or unmanaged, this type can lead to very serious mental and physical problemsThe key is to payclose attention to what your body is telling you. Learn to differentiate between the two and then

take the appropriate action. If you have a lot of the bad kind, it's important to learn effective

stress management.

Remember, although you may never completely rid your life of bad stress, there are many waysto deal with it so you can begin to live a less-stressful life. Use the tools and resources on this

site to help you begin a new, more rewarding, chapter in your life.

Just like everything in life, when there is good or positive stress, there are also "bad" or "negative

stress". These types of stress is the opposite of Eustress and it's called Distress

Distress is a “negative stress”. It is a stress disorder that is caused by adverse events and it often

influences a person’s ability to cope. Some events leading to distress are:

• Death of a loved one

• Financial problems

• Heavy work responsibility and workload

• Strained relationship

• Chronic illnesses

The remaining two types of stress are:

3. Hyperstress

When a person is pushed beyond what he or she can handle, they will experience what we called

hyper stress.

Hyper stress results from being overloaded or overworked. It’s like being stressed out. Whensomeone is hyper stressed, even little things can trigger a strong emotional response. People who

are most likely to suffer from hyper stress are:

• Working mothers who have to multi-task, juggling between work and family

commitments

• A wall street trader who are constantly under immerse tension

• People who are under constant financial strains.

• Generally people working in fast pace environment.

• People who suffer from GAD often suffer from chronic worry. They worry about thesmallest things, usually for much longer than they need to result in it affecting other parts

of their life. It can affect their sleep, their work performance, personal relationships and

more.

Stress Management

Stress management in the workplace is a useful skill that many don’t take advantage of. Many

of us and leaders alike get caught up in day to day tasks. To many job responsibilities might keepyou busy. The result is that stress management is often overlooked or ignored as a solution to

 business problems.

Whatever reason you have for not using stress management techniques is a big mistake. Stress

in life today is widespread and has no boundaries. We all deal with stress daily, at work and athome. Stress comes in all forms and can affect emotions and physical abilities.

In the workplace, stress can cause all kinds of business issues and concerns. These issues and

concerns left unaddressed will ultimately hurt morale and profits. One simple solution tomanaging stress is to understand what stress management is and how to handle workplace stress. But before we get into solutions explore more reasons why stress management in the workplace

is important.

• Family

Families are a complex network of interactions. Each family is a system and hence eachinteraction and each personality affects the entire system. If one person is ill in your family, it is

clear how that illness disrupts the everyday flow of the system. Likewise, it affects the system

when one member of the family is angry or depressed. An alcoholic in the family disrupts thesystem and often leads to the system trying to adapt to the family member.

• Relationships

A primary relationship is often stressful. Two people, each with different histories, different

personalities, different needs, and different ways of doing things are trying to live under the same

roof and get along with each other on a daily basis. Each person in the relationship bringsexpectations -- a set of explicit expectations, a set of implicit expectations, and a set of unrealistic expectations. These expectations, when in conflict with the other person's

expectations, can create a great deal of conflict; and this conflict is stressful.

• Environmental stresses

Here our environment may be a source of unpleasant or distracting stimuli causing the stress. These can

come from:

• Crowding and invasion of personal space

• Insufficient working and living space•  Noise

• Dirty or untidy conditions

• Pollution• A badly organized or run down environment

• Work Stress

Do you have a difficult boss?• Are your talents under-used?

• Are you constantly asked to put in overtime, particularly at the last minute?

• Do you face role ambiguity, that is, you don't have a clear definition of what's expectedof you?

• Do you face conflicting demands? If you have one of your bosses, and many people do,

sometimes to please one you have to displease the other.

SRM BUSINESS SCHOOL Page 23

Page 24: Stress Management in the Workplace 2003

• Do you deal with excessive job requirements - tasks and assignments that clearly exceed

your ability or training?

• Do you lack job security?

• Do you have an inflexible work environment? Do you have to be in by 9 O' clock on the

 button?

• Is there a healthy career progression? Does hard work earn reward?• Do you have responsibility for the performance of others? Have you ever had to fire

someone?

Answering the above questions will let you know how stressful your job is. Work is a significantsource of stress for many people. Conflicts on the job, dissatisfaction with one's supervisor or

with the job itself, insufficient financial compensation, job insecurity, fear of changing a job for

greater advancement, feeling stifled in a quest for power, not feeling appreciated or acknowledged, all produce significant stress. The degree of stress will vary depending on the

 personality of the individual.

Thus a comprehensive list of the stresses we experience from our job may include the following:

• too much or too little work

• having to perform beyond our experience or perceived abilities

• having to overcome unnecessary obstacles

• time pressures and deadlines

• keeping up with new developments

• changes in procedures and policies

• lack of relevant information, support and advice• lack of clear objectives

• unclear expectations of our role from our boss or colleagues

• responsibility for people, budgets or equipment• career development stress:

o under-promotion, frustration and boredom with current role

o over-promotion beyond abilities

o lack of a clear plan for career development

o lack of opportunity

o lack of job security

• Stress from our organization or our clients:

o  pressures from our boss or from above in our organization

o interference in our work

o demands from clients

o disruptions to work planso The telephone!

stressed, many employees will look to you for guidance and direction. Some may seek help fromyou by talking one on one. It will all though depend on the source of the stressor.

If you happen to be the stress, then there is bad weather in the forecast. Remember good leadershave the trust and respect of their employees. By properly handling stress and indentifying

stressful issues correctly you will be able to lead in the tough times.

Reason # 4: Allows the meeting of deadlines

Many times employees become distracted and call out more often when stress arises. Dependingon the source of the stressor. Some employees might start not caring and just go through the

motions. The result here is the lack of productivity and the missing of deadlines .

Keeping a lookout for stressors before they become an issue, should help your business run

smoothly. But remember stress alone is not the only factor that affects productivity.

Reason # 5: Decreases chances of unethical issues

Unethical issues often rear its ugly head in times of high stress. There have been times when

unethical practices are used for shortcut purposes. Usually the outcome here is more stress than before. The blame game starts with he said she said or fingure pointing. The next thing that will

happen will involve human resources and its is investigation. Whenever hr gets involved it ends

up being another distraction that you don’t need.Stress management in the workplace can be

solution to ethical issues. Many ethics courses have discussed that stress plays a vital role inethical issues. You may never be able to stop the employee whom chooses to be unethical for

reasons that are not stress related.

Reason # 6: Reduces possibilities of workplace conflicts

Workplace conflicts are not uncommon and happen more then you think. Many conflicts occur

due to differences in opinions, personalities and sometimes stress. Conflicts that deal with stress

usually build up over time and then explode. By managing stress and being aware of a possible

issue will make everyone’s life easier. Workplace conflicts end up creating chaos and a bigdistraction you don't need.

Reason # 7: Strengthens communication process

The negative actions are less communicating about the job between individuals. Instead

employees will talk to others about company issues or problems with particular managers.Attitudes also tend to shift towards angry, bitter and judgmental. The communication process in

the workplace is a key element to business success. When the process fails, it can create a chain

reaction. Managers that are strong in handling work-related stress usually can identify a problemand resolve it. This in short strengthens the communication process.

Reason # 8: Smooth running projects

Stress and management go hand and hand. It always will be lurking around the corner. And there

is no bigger example of this like managing a project. With managing a project you never knowwhen a vendor may be delayed or the lack of supplies may exist. These issues will make it hard

to reach a required deadline.

What happens sometimes is employees of the project are told to deal with it and meet the

deadline. This often creates even more stress to an already stressful situation. You have nocontrol over vendor issues. But you do have a say in controlling the stress that you may or may

not of created yourself.

Reason # 9: Improves your ability to develop teamwork and team building

SRM BUSINESS SCHOOL Page 26

Stress management in the workplace will allow you to build team unity. Many times stress hurts

your chance to build teamwork. The leaders who search out stress management resources find positive results. They use handling stress as a tool. Since many employees hate the idea of

teambuilding workshops. For the simple reason of stressors in work. So remove the stressor and

 build team unity.

Reason # 10: Helps in the writing performance appraisals

Stress management in the workplace when used effectively will help you in the review writing

process. Stress is a factor that can be directly be related to job performance. It is a factor that ismeasurable. It can also be used to judge how well employees work with others.

Signs and Symptoms of Stress

The events that give rise to symptoms of

stress in your life are called stressors.

Stress is psychological reaction to demands made on you by the external

environment. Symptoms of stress appear when you perceive a situation as

threatening.

Psychological effects of stress vary according to your perception of danger

in the situation. Consider the case of roller coaster. Have you ever observed

closely the expressions of all the people taking the ride in the roller coaster?

- You must have noticed the wide variation of emotions being felt by them.

The intensity of the response is in proportion to your perception of danger

in the given situation. The same situation gives rise to varied psychological

effects of stress in different people.

The psychological effects of stress depend on the degree of control that youthink you have over the situation.

 Physical symptoms of severe stress

1. Headaches, dizziness, neck ache, back pain,

2. High blood pressure, chest pain, palpitations,

3. Heart Disease, Beware of the heart attack symptoms!

4. Frequent colds, infections,

5. Rashes, itches, hives,

6. Fatigue and constant tiredness,

7. Frequent stomach pain and heart burn.

Psychological Effects of stress

1. Anxiety and nervousness,

2. Insomnia, nightmares, bad dreams,

3. Difficulty in concentrating,

4. Difficulty in decision making,

5. Irritability, anger bouts,

6. Feeling of loneliness and worthlessness.

Workplace stress can be dealt with at two levels –

Coping with job stress through stress management

Some organizations provide training to employees on stress management and EmployeeAssistance Program (EAP). Nearly half of the companies in USA are providing training to

employees on ways to handle stress. These programs teach employees the causes and

consequences of stress, the way to handle them and some relaxation exercises.

These programs are able to alleviate some symptoms of stress, like sleep disturbances andanxiety.

Some companies also provide counseling sessions to some employees who also have some

 personal problems.

Dealing with workplace stress through organizational changes

Another way to handle the problem is to employ a consultant, who studies the organizational

work environment and gets first hand feedback from the employees.

The consultant is then able to suggest the steps to be taken to reduce the levels of stress at

workplace.

How Does Stress Affect a Person....

The way the stress affects a person depends a lot on his or her perspective

of the situation. You feel it when you feel challenged and called upon to bring

additional resources to deal with the situation.

SRM BUSINESS SCHOOL Page 29

Page 30: Stress Management in the Workplace 2003

What is stressful for one might not be so for the other person. Moreover, whatever is stressful for

a person at one time might not be so for the same person some other time?

It affects a person to the degree of control he believes he has over the situation.

Either you believe that you can cope or you feel that you can’t. If you feel you can, you getenergized and work at your peak level. When you feel that the situation is spinning out of

control, you feel depressed and drained of all energy. Stress is there in both the situations. Iteffects positively in one case, negatively in another.

It is a matter of perception.

You might be aware of certain occasions when stress prompted you to concerted action. It could

be your school examinations. That stress drove you made you perform that you surpassed evenyour own expectations.

Or, at your workplace, you might have noticed how the impending visit of a senior bossmotivates the whole staff to work at a higher level of efficiency.

It is also a matter of attitude.

So, stress is not bad after all. Imagine that stress were not there. Will you feel motivated? Willyou feel energized? I think not: life after all, thrives on stress.

It is exactly like the tension of strings on a guitar. If the strings are loose, guitar produces a

groaning sound. When the tightness is just right, it sings beautifully. If you tighten the strings

still further, the guitar starts shrieking!

Stress increases your effectiveness up to a point reaching a peak level at a certain level. Then,

efficiency decreases steeply with every small increase in stress. Just prior to the peak efficiency

 point lies the comfort zone.

Ways for Coping with Stress

Coping with stress requires a conscious effort each day. Take time out for yourself, even if only

for 30 minutes, to focus reducing stress.

To reduce stress in your life try implementing these 10 ways to improve your well-being:

1. Breathe. Take five minutes each day to close your eyes and just be. Inhale for a count of

four, hold the breath for two seconds, and then exhale for a count of four. At the end of

the exhalation, hold the breath again for two seconds before inhaling.

2. Be Grateful. Create a list of things in your life for which you are thankful. Sometimes

we forget that life is to be enjoyed and remembering the many blessings is a first step.

3. Plan a Vacation. Just by focusing on a trip away from your everyday life can give you a

 break

4. Laugh. Remember that life was never meant to always be so serious. Take a lighter approach today and be an observer of your life.

5. Take a Day Off. Plan a day off with you and a friend or special someone. Whether you

go shopping, plan a picnic, or take a day trip to a new town, the new environment will bea change of pace.

6. Exercise. We often forget to take time for ourselves and our bodies. Everybody needs

some sort of exercise to maintain a normal balance. Even a 30 minute walk will clear

your head.

7. Soak in a Bubble Bath. Indulge yourself in a pleasure of life as simple as a bubble bath.

Light a candle, put on some soothing music, and soaks for awhile in a warm hot bubble

 bath.

8. Take a Nap. A nap is an indulgence of life that can revitalize you. Remember to be good

to yourself and get enough sleep.

9. Make a List. We often forget to take time out for ourselves in our hectic lives. Each day

make a list of three things that you will do for yourself that will bring you joy.

10.Smile. A simple smile given to a friend, family member, or stranger can really lift your spirits. Life wasn't meant to be taken so serious.

The Causes of Stress:

Work Situations:

The type of work which person does has a lot to do with the person’s general stress level.

Researchers have come up with a list of high stress occupations . Among them are nurse, musician,

lab technician, computer programmer, and public relation to name a few.

Personal Habits:

These can also lead to stress in your work and life. Smoking, eating too much sugar or salt, getting

overtired, being pessimistic, worrying about your career, dwelling on past failures using negative self talk

can all cause stress.

SRM BUSINESS SCHOOL Page 33

Page 34: Stress Management in the Workplace 2003

Another major stress causer is the attempt of being a perfectionist or the cent percent factor. Many of us

try too hard for perfection and are disappointed if we fall short. You may be just one percent off the mark.

You ignore the ninety nine percent correct. You dwell on that one percent, and are upset because you

were not perfect.

The people around you also cause stress. Conflict, confrontation, blaming you, spreading rumors,

backstabbing, not fulfilling agreements, not giving recognition for a ob well done, all cause stress.

The only thing constant in life is change. The moment you adjust yourself to the changed environment,

another change rolls in. New bosses or colleagues, mergers, promotions, new offices, new policies,

directions or procedures can cause the stress to rise.

Causes of stress

• A new job or responsibility.

• Loss of a job or retirement.

• Death of someone you love.

• Divorce or marriage.

• Financial problems.

• Certain health conditions or disease.

• Pregnancy or fear of labor or childbirth-related stress,

• Changing residence or moving to an unfamiliar place.

• Violence or injury.

• Family conflicts.

• Busy schedules, lack of rest or too much travel.

Imagination can cause plenty of stress, certainly more than it should, for example, believing

others are making more money than you are. Other ways to invite stress is anticipating problems

that never happen, thinking of bad possible outcomes rather than good ones.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF STRESS IS A HAZARD IN YOUR

WORKPLACE?

Stress is found at all workplaces, and can have both good and bad effect on individuals- their work performance and their health and well being. Efforts to control or manage stress levels

when it is causing problems in the workplace should focus on changing the work environment or

providing affected employees with help to reduce high levels of stress.

There are a range of physical, psychological and behavioral symptoms you can experience if you

are faced with high levels of stress. Some of these indicators of stress problems are listed below:

Physical effects include:

* Increased blood pressure;

* Increased heart rate {Tachycardia};

* Increased muscle tension;* Headaches

Psychological effects include:

* Increased anxiety;

* Depression;

* Aggression;

* Confusion.

Behavioral effects include:

* Increased smoking;* Increased drinking;

* Irritability;

* Obsessive concern with trivial issues;

* Poor work performance.

Individuals and work groups can both show they are experiencing unmanageable levels of stress

through a range of symptoms. Work group indicators of stress problems can include

absenteeism, high or increased accident rates, poor or reduced work output and poor

interpersonal relations in the workplace.

Get Balanced:1. Be Powerful.

• Make decisions that are best for you.

• Take action to make your desires come true.

2.  Be Realistic.

SRM BUSINESS SCHOOL Page 35

Page 36: Stress Management in the Workplace 2003

• Do not expect unachievable things of yourself.

• Modify aggressive timelines and reduce a heavy workload.

3. Be aware.

•What is your body telling you?

• Are you doing what you need to make yourself happy?

4. Be grateful.

• Give thanks every day for what you have (health, friends, great personality, work).

• Know that you are a wonderful and unique person.

5.  Be Loving.

• Practice daily acts of kindness for others.

Look at how you currently cope with stress

Think about the ways you currently manage and cope with stress in your life. Your stress journal

can help you identify them. Are your coping strategies healthy or unhealthy, helpful or

unproductive? Unfortunately, many people cope with stress in ways that compound the problem.

Unhealthy ways of coping with stress

These coping strategies may temporarily reduce stress, but they cause more damage in the long

run:

• Smoking

• Drinking too much

• Overeating or undereating

• Zoning out for hours in front of the TVor computer

• Withdrawing from friends, family, and

activities

• Using pills or drugs to relax

• Sleeping too much

• Procrastinating

• Filling up every minute of the day toavoid facing problems

• Taking out your stress on others (lashing

out, angry outbursts, physical violence)

Learning healthier ways to manage stress

If your methods of coping with stress aren’t contributing to your greater emotional and physical

health, it’s time to find healthier ones. There are many healthy ways to manage and cope withstress, but they all require change. You can either change the situation or change your reaction.

When deciding which option to choose, it’s helpful to think of the four As: avoid, alter, adapt, or

accept.

SRM BUSINESS SCHOOL Page 36

Page 37: Stress Management in the Workplace 2003

Since everyone has a unique response to stress, there is no “one size fits all” solution to

managing it. No single method works for everyone or in every situation, so experiment withdifferent techniques and strategies. Focus on what makes you feel calm and in control.

Dealing with Stressful Situations: The Four A’s

Change the situation:

• Avoid the stressor.

• Alter the stressor.

Change your reaction:

• Adapt to the stressor.

• Accept the stressor.

Stress management strategy #1: Avoid unnecessary stress

Not all stress can be avoided, and it’s not healthy to avoid a situation that needs to be addressed. You may be surprised, however, by the number of stressors in your life that you can eliminate.

• Learn how to say “no” – Know your limits and stick to them. Whether in your personal

or professional life, refuse to accept added responsibilities when you’re close to reaching

them. Taking on more than you can handle is a surefire recipe for stress.

• Avoid people who stress you out – If someone consistently causes stress in your life and

you can’t turn the relationship around, limit the amount of time you spend with that

person or end the relationship entirely.

• Take control of your environment – If the evening news makes you anxious, turn the

TV off. If traffic’s got you tense, take a longer but less-traveled route. If going to the

market is an unpleasant chore, do your grocery shopping online.

• Pare down your to-do list – Analyze your schedule, responsibilities, and daily tasks. If

you’ve got too much on your plate, distinguish between the “shoulds” and the “musts.”

Drop tasks that aren’t truly necessary to the bottom of the list or eliminate them entirely.

SRM BUSINESS SCHOOL Page 37

Page 38: Stress Management in the Workplace 2003

Stress management strategy #2: Alter the situation

If you can’t avoid a stressful situation, try to alter it. Figure out what you can do to change thingsso the problem doesn’t present itself in the future. Often, this involves changing the way you

communicate and operate in your daily life.

Express your feelings instead of bottling them up. If something or someone is bothering

you, communicate your concerns in an open and respectful way. If you don’t voice your

feelings, resentment will build and the situation will likely remain the same.

Be willing to compromise. When you ask someone to change their behavior, be willing to

do the same. If you both are willing to bend at least a little, you’ll have a good chance of finding a happy middle ground.

Be more assertive. Don’t take a backseat in your own life. Deal with problems head on,

doing your best to anticipate and prevent them. If you’ve got an exam to study for and your chatty roommate just got home, say up front that you only have five minutes to talk.Manage

your time better. Poor time management can cause a lot of stress. When you’re stretched

too thin and running behind, it’s hard to stay calm and focused. But if you plan ahead andmake sure you don’t overextend yourself, you can alter the amount of stress you’re under.

Stress management strategy #3: Adapt to the stressor

If you can’t change the stressor, change yourself. You can adapt to stressful situations and regain

your sense of control by changing your expectations and attitude.

• Reframe problems. Try to view stressful situations from a more positive perspective.

Rather than fuming about a traffic jam, look at it as an opportunity to pause and regroup,

listen to your favorite radio station, or enjoy some alone time.

• Look at the big picture. Take perspective of the stressful situation. Ask yourself how

important it will be in the long run. Will it matter in a month? A year? Is it really worthgetting upset over? If the answer is no, focus your time and energy elsewhere.

• Adjust your standards. Perfectionism is a major source of avoidable stress. Stop settingyourself up for failure by demanding perfection. Set reasonable standards for yourself

and others, and learn to be okay with “good enough.”

SRM BUSINESS SCHOOL Page 38

Page 39: Stress Management in the Workplace 2003

8/4/2019 Stress Management in the Workplace 2003

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/stress-management-in-the-workplace-2003 39/80

• Focus on the positive. When stress is getting you down, take a moment to reflect on all

the things you appreciate in your life, including your own positive qualities and gifts.

This simple strategy can help you keep things in perspective.

Adjusting Your Attitude

How you think can have a profound effect on your emotional and physical well-being. Each time

you think a negative thought about yourself, your body reacts as if it were in the throes of atension-filled situation. If you see good things about yourself, you are more likely to feel good;

the reverse is also true. Eliminate words such as "always," "never," "should," and "must." These

are telltale marks of self-defeating thoughts.

Stress management strategy #4: Accept the things you can’t

change

Some sources of stress are unavoidable. You can’t prevent or change stressors such

as the death of a loved one, a serious illness, or a national recession. In such

cases, the best way to cope with stress is to accept things as they are.

Acceptance may be difficult, but in the long run, it’s easier than railing against

a situation you can’t change.

• Don’t try to control the uncontrollable. Many things in life are beyond our control—  particularly the behavior of other people. Rather than stressing out over them, focus on

the things you can control such as the way you choose to react to problems.

• Look for the upside. As the saying goes, “What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.”

When facing major challenges, try to look at them as opportunities for personal growth. If your own poor choices contributed to a stressful situation, reflect on them and learn from

your mistakes.

• Share your feelings. Talk to a trusted friend or make an appointment with a therapist.Expressing what you’re going through can be very cathartic, even if there’s nothing you

can do to alter the stressful situation.

• Learn to forgive. Accept the fact that we live in an imperfect world and that people

make mistakes. Let go of anger and resentments.  Free yourself from negative energy byforgiving and moving on.

Stress management strategy #5: Make time for fun and

relaxation

Beyond a take-charge approach and a positive attitude, you can reduce stress in your life by

nurturing yourself. If you regularly make time for fun and relaxation, you’ll be in a better placeto handle life’s stressors when they inevitably come.

Healthy ways to relax and recharge

• Go for a walk.

• Spend time in nature.

• Call a good friend.

• Sweat out tension with a good workout.

• Write in your journal.

• Take a long bath.

• Savor a warm cup of coffee or tea.

• Play with a pet.

• Work in your garden.

• Get a massage.

• Listen to music.

• Watch a comedy.

Don’t get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of life that you forget to take care of your ownneeds. Nurturing yourself is a necessity, not a luxury.

• Set aside relaxation time. Include rest and relaxation in your daily schedule. Don’t

allow other obligations to encroach. This is your time to take a break from all

responsibilities and recharge your batteries.

• Connect with others. Spend time with positive people who enhance your life. A strong

support system will buffer you from the negative effects of stress.

• Do something you enjoy every day. Make time for leisure activities that bring you joy,

whether it be stargazing, playing the piano, or working on your bike.

• Keep your sense of humor. This includes the ability to laugh at yourself. The act of

laughing helps your body fight stress in a number of ways.

Stress management strategy #6: Adopt a healthy lifestyle

You can increase your resistance to stress by strengthening your physical health.

• Exercise regularly. Physical activity plays a key role in reducing and preventing theeffects of stress. Make time for at least 30 minutes of exercise, three times per week.

Nothing beats aerobic exercise for releasing pent-up stress and tension.

• Eat a healthy diet. Well-nourished bodies are better prepared to cope with stress, so be

mindful of what you eat. Start your day right with breakfast, and keep your energy up and

your mind clear with balanced, nutritious meals throughout the day.

• Reduce caffeine and sugar. The temporary "highs" caffeine and sugar provide often end

in with a crash in mood and energy. By reducing the amount of coffee, soft drinks,

chocolate, and sugar snacks in your diet, you’ll feel more relaxed and you’ll sleep better.

• Avoid alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs. Self-medicating with alcohol or drugs may

provide an easy escape from stress, but the relief is only temporary. Don’t avoid or mask

the issue at hand; deal with problems head on and with a clear mind.

• Get enough sleep. Adequate sleep fuels your mind, as well as your body. Feeling tiredwill increase your stress because it may cause you to think irrationally.

Research methodology

Research methodology is a way to systematically solve the research problem. It may be understood as a science

of studying how research is done scientifically. In it we study the various steps that are generally adopted by a

researcher in studying his research problem along with the logic behind them. It is necessary for the researcher

to know not only the research methods/techniques but also the methodology. Researchers not only need to know

how to develop certain indices or tests, how to calculate the mean, the mode, the median or the standard

deviation or chi-square, how to apply particular research techniques, but they also need to know which of these

methods or techniques, are relevant and which are not, and what would they mean and indicate and why.

Thus when we talk of research methodology we not only talk of the research methods but also consider

the logic behind the methods we use in the context of our research study and explains why we are using

a particular method or technique and why we are not using others so that research results are capable of

being evaluated either by the researcher himself or by others. This section contains the methodological

issues in research. It focuses primarily on providing help with the tools and techniques used in the

research. These tools and techniques differ from discipline to discipline.

Researchers also have specific blazes. Some will prefer Qualitative over Quantitative approaches or

vice-versa. Generally speaking, an integrated approach is advisable. A study that contains only

qualitative data or solely quantitative data messes the rich texture of interpretation that an integratedapproach makes possible. While this section may be organized in a way that suggests a defined process,

this is not the intention.

"Marketing research is the systematic design, collection, analysis and reporting of data and findings

and relevant to specific marketing situations facing the company."

. RESEARCH DESIGN

A research project conducted scientifically has a specific framework of research from the problems

identification to the presentation of the reports. This framework of conducting research is known as the

RESEARCH DESIGN.

A research design is the arrangements of conditions and analysis of data in a manner that aims to

combine relevance to the research purpose with economy in procedure.

Research design provides the glue that holds the research project together. A design is used to structure

the research, to show how all of the major parts of the research project-the samples or the groups,

measures, treatments or programs, and methods of assignment-work together to try to address the

central research questions.

There can be following types of research design:

  EXPLORATORY RESEARCH STUDIES:

Exploratory Research studies are also termed as formulate research studies. The main purpose of such

studies is of formulating a problem for more precise investigation or of developing the working

hypothesis from an operational point of view. The major emphasis in such studies is on discovery of

idea and insight. As such research designs appropriate for such studies must be flexible enough to

provide opportunity for considering different aspects of a problem under study. Inbuilt flexibility in

research design is needed because the research problem, broadly defined initially is transformed into

one with more precise meaning in exploratory studies.

DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH STUDIES:

SRM BUSINESS SCHOOL Page 44

Page 45: Stress Management in the Workplace 2003

Descriptive Research studies are those studies which are concerned with describing the characteristics

of a particular individual, or of a group. Studies concerned with narration of facts and characteristics

concerning individual, group or situation are all examples of descriptive research study most of the

social research comes under this categories

For the purpose of our research work we have used descriptive research studies:

-  SAMPLING DESIGN

When field studies are undertaken in practical life, consideration of time and cost almost invariably

lead to selection of respondents i.e., selection of only a few items. The respondents selected should be

as representative of the total population as possible in order to produce a miniature cross section. The

selected respondents constituted the 'sample' and the selection process is called sampling technique.

The survey so conducted are called’ sample survey'.

A sample design is a definite plan for obtaining a sample from a given population. It refers to the

technique or the procedure the researcher would adopt in selecting items for the sample. For collecting

primary data from the sample customer through the questionnaire/answer protocol process, was used to

get substantial amount of information from the members of the target population so that inductive, logic

and probabilistic inferences, rather than deductive reasoning can be incorporated in study the career

growth and job satisfaction of the employees.

There can be following types of sample design:

 PROBABILITY SAMPLING:

Probability sampling is also known as ‘random sampling ‘or ‘chance’ sampling. Under this sampling

design every item of inclusion in the sample. It is, so to say, a lottery method in which individual units

are picked up from the whole group not deliberately but by some mechanical process.

 NON-PROBABILITY SAMPLING:

Non-Probability sampling is that sampling is that sampling procedure which does not afford any basisfor estimating the probability that each item in the population has of being included in the sample. Non

Probability sampling is also known by different names such as deliberate sampling, purposive

sampling and judgment sampling. In this type of sampling, items for the sample are selected

deliberately by the research:

CONVENIENCE SAMPLING.

In convenience sampling selection, the researcher chooses the sampling unit on the basis of

convenience or accessibility. It is called accidental samples because the sample-unit enters by accident.

This is also knows as a sample of the man in the street, i.e. , selection of units where they are. Sample

units are selected because they are accessible. For example, in testing a potential new product, the

sample works is done by adding the new product to the appropriate shops in the locality. Purchasing

and selling of the new product is observed there.

For the purpose of this research we have used Non Probability Convenience Sampling.

DATA COLLECTION METHOD

The task of collecting the data begins after a research problem has been defined and research

design/plan chalked out. While deciding about the method of data collection to be used for the study the

researcher should keep in mind two types of data viz., primary and secondary.

Secondary data:

The secondary data are those which have been already collected by someone else and which have

already been passed through the statistical tool.

"Secondary data are statistics not gathered for the immediate study at hand but for some other

 purposes."

Secondary data can be classified into:-

1] Internal Secondary Data:

“Data that are originated within the firm for which the research is being conducted are internal data. If they

were collected for some other purposes, they are internal secondary data.

  2) External Secondary Data:

The second form of secondary data is external sources which are generally published and are available

in different form and different sources.

Primary data:

The primary data are those which are collected afresh and for the first time, and thus happen to be in

original in character.

"Primary data may be described as those data that have been observed and recorded by the researchers

for the first time to their knowledge’s

SUGGESTIONS:

1. There should be training for all employees to explain the policies & practices of MEPL

followed by the HR department, so that they can understand the functions & limitations of

the HR department.

2. More focus should be given to inefficient employees who are able to perform their job

efficiently.

3. There should be some stress handling seminars and sessions to make the employees healthy

and productive.

LIMITATIONS OF STUDY

I have sincerely tried my best to prepare this project report in precise manner with accuracy.

During the completion of the project the limitation faced by me are as under.

• As the duration of the summer training was four weeks and the time was one of the major

constraints for carry out study and to complete the project on time.

• As the project required the surveys, and necessary advice of the HR manager/ HR

executive, the busy schedule of the employees was also constraint for completing the

project in the given time frame.

• The survey of the employees was to be conducted in different departments

and which was geographically separated.
