Strengthening the Capacity of SUN Countries to Scale Up Nutrition through

“Learning Routes”:A pilot programme in Peru and Senegal

As a Global Movement, Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) unites Governments, Civil Society, Businesses and Citizens in a worldwide effort to End Under-Nutrition.

Launched in 2010, today SUN has 50 member countries, where half of the chronic malnourished children of the world live. Joining this Movement, nations, organizations and individuals work together to improve nutrition in their countries, recognizing that when children are properly nourished they can grow up to be healthy, productive adults.

Why Learn from Each Other?

September 2013 was a milestone in the SUN Movement, when SUN members had their First Global Gathering in New York City. Participants got to know each other, sharing both success stories and challenges in improving nutrition. One clear message from the SUN delegates was the Urgent Need for Sharing Opportunities, enabling countries to learn from each other’s experiences.

How Learn from Each Other?

To improve sharing and learning initiatives between national SUN multi-stakeholder platforms, the SUN Movement Secretariat partnered with PROCASUR Corporation to design and implement learning

exchange tools, called “Learning Routes”, to respond to specific countries’ knowledge needs.

PROCASUR Corporation is a not-for-profit international organization established in 1996 in Santiago, Chile, to provide technical assistance and tools for effective, efficient knowledge management and capacity building for public and private actors engaged in the fight against poverty in the developing world.

What is a ‘Learning Route’?

A ‘Learning Route’ (LR) is a planned journey with training objectives geared towards capacity building on the basis of Two Central Components:

1. The Need (of an individual or organization) or interest for knowledge;

2. The Offer of knowledge, as relevant experiences and innovative ways through which other people or organizations have dealt with similar problems and successful results that can become a reference for others.

To enable participants to acquire Very Practical Tools to Scale-up Nutrition in their home countries, SUN Secretariat and PROCASUR Corporation have designed 2 pilot Learning Routes to be hosted in Peru and Senegal during 2014.

Which are the objectives of the pilot programme?

The two Learning Routes focus on Hands-on Sharing across the SUN country national platforms showing Best Practices towards building a Favourable Environment to carry out National Strategies, design and implement Social Programs, Budgets and comprehensive and inclusive Development Projects to reduce or eliminate malnutrition.

Enhancing joint learning and sharing contributes to better delivery of Common Results in Nutrition, and to improved development effectiveness.

Learning Routes have the following Objectives:

• Improve knowledge of SUN members about successful initiatives in nutrition;• Better access to hands-on methods and tools to scale-up nutrition;• Strengthen partnerships and networking;• Systematic, continued cross-fertilization among countries.

Why Peru and Senegal?

Senegal and Peru have been selected as host countries for visiting delegations, taking into account:

• The success and relevance of their experience in scaling up nutrition;

• The expression of interest of other member countries to learn from them;

• Geographical and linguistic balance, and

• Additional key elements such as impact, sustainability, institutional strengthening, innovation, replicability, and logistics.

Fight Against Malnutrition Unit (CLM, for its French Acronym) is a Senegalese coordinating body composed of representatives of key technical Ministries involved in nutrition-related issues. CLM is hosting the Learning Route (in French and English), from May 26 to Jun 01, 2014.

The Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (MIDIS , for its Spanish acronym), ensures multi-sectoral and inter-institutional coordination to reduce chronic under-nutrition, promoting the development of specific public policies in Peru. The MIDIS is hosting the Learning Route (in Spanish, French and English), during August 18-24, 2014.
