We have been hesitating to go to TR. It required a lot of hard work to modify and prepare the readout at required scale and speed with hardware which was not designed for this purpose. At the end, the results are remarkable. Even if not perfect, we have a first large system which is (almost) functional.Even more important is probably the experience and feed-back for final readout.

Installation and commissioning

• The scaled-down system was almost complete– MPOD with HV and LV modules– Low Voltage Patch Panels for power

distribution and monitoring– HV dummy Patch Panel installed as the

components have arrived too late– VME crates– Cabling – ethernet/readout+control

cables, LV and HV cables, CANBUS• Owing to careful preparation, installation

went smoothly• Connectivity and functionality checked

with standard tools• Thanks and congratulations to

everybody involved for a very good job

DCS and services• LV patch panel

– Equipped with ELMBs to control• Channel on/off• Measuring voltages on cover• Measuring line current• Measuring temperatures on

covers and PP

– Simple program for controlling ELMB used successfully during TR

– QUALIFIED– We must wait with full

production • Possibly new frontend with

different power requirements

DCS and services

• HV patch panels– Ready for test with

magnet to check HV relays

– Test will be done in the real place in ECN3

– Test with DCS software passed

– If they pass magnet test, we can start the full production

DCS and services• MPOD

– Received just 2 weeks before TR– Wiener OPC server updated– Tested quickly in POOL

• Reports https://edms.cern.ch/document/1210689

– Stable and fully functional with both LV and HV modules

– QUALIFIED– Full system ~70kCHF– We should start negotiation and procurement

ASAP – 1 full system in 2013– 3 (+1 spare?) in 2014

DCS and services• MPOD

– Simple application for control• Channel on/off, voltage, current, etc

• LV PP– Simple program for controlling ELMBs

• DCS was remarkably stable and reliable ! THANKS• In 2013 we need to prepare DCS requirements document to be included in global DCS

Readout• SRB

– SRB not designed for such speed and amount of data• Lab tests• Test beam

– Strong interest to participate to TR• SRB modified

• DAQ– SRAM for data for ~330,000 events (full in few ms for nominal 33kHz/straw)– Trigger tag (time stamp) FIFO only for 1024 triggers– Readout speed per SRB

• 64straws*2edges*48bits*rate33kHz ~ 25Mbytes/s

– Reachable only using VME block transfer• Block transfer tested and functional• But never used in TR due to lack of time• A32D32 access used through all the run

– Readout software developed and debugged during TR

Readout• Problems

– VME 9U crates failing• Replaced 3 times!

– Even 1 6U crate has failed

• New 6U crates used

– When data not extracted fast enough, events got mangled• FW modified, events kept intact even if some data lost

– Garbage at the end of data block• We realized too late that there is a trigger after EOB• Cover switches to

– DAQ mode after SOB– Test and control mode after EOB

• Extra trigger after EOB was understood as a request for noise scan and the data were sent to SRB

• Triggers disabled

Page 10: Straw detector Technical run experience

Readout• Problems (cont)

– CARIOCA multiple hits• Min signal width ~30ns• But no signal width ~ few ns ?• ‘ringing’ at the end of signal• If it happens in 12.5 ns window, the

measurement is wrong

– The first data analysis indicates a lot of spurious data, mainly in the first days of TR

– Sometimes number of triggers differ between SRBs• Probably because of trigger FIFO overflow (1k

of triggers)

– After FW and DAQ changes, improvement in data quality• Test in lab OK even for very high rates• The data from the last few days of TR should be

OK• Waiting for analysis

Readout

• Plans– Finish DAQ and demonstrate the system running at

required speed with good quality data (decoupled from frontend problems)

– Clean up of the code and firmware– Create libraries with common functions

• For FW it already exists• For SW must be done

• Based on the experience from TR and from lab tests we have a very good input for designing the final readout
