È la classica più giovane eppure è anche la più storica. È la gara più terrena, terrestre, territoriale, terra-terra. È la corsa più amata dai corridori, e non solo dagli spettatori, quelli sistemati sui paracarri e quelli stravaccati sui divani. Le Strade Bianche è unica, sola, originale, nata dagli cicloamatori e adottata dai professionisti e arata dai cicloturisti e sognata dai ciclonauti. È la Parigi-Roubaix dello sterrato, il Fiandre della ghiaia, la Milano-Sanremo delle buche. È così antica da sembrare nuova, ma anche così nuova da sembrare antica. È l’imprevisto previsto e l’inconveniente convenuto, è la fortuna degli infortunati e la felicità degli infelici, ma anche l’infortunio dei fortunati e l’infelicità dei felici. Perché è un’Iliade e un’Odissea, è una guerra e un viaggio, è un’avventura con disavventure, è un romanzo e un fi lm, è - comunque vada - uno spettacolo che non puoi dimenticare. Le Strade Bianche è quel labirinto di vie contadine, campagnole, rurali, di carrettiere immuni all’asfalto, salvate dal traffi co, silenziose o brontolone, polverose o fangose, vegetali e minerali, bestiali e animali, a due ruote e a quattro zampe. È quell’angolo magico della Toscana, quella macchina del tempo in cui si pedala avanti per tornare indietro, e dove il tempo - avanti e indietro, avanti o indietro - scorre più lentamente, a dimensione umana, più sentimento che calcolo, più ricordo che cronaca, più tempo virtuoso che tempo virtuale, più memoria che attualità. Comincia in un villaggio sotto un campanile (Gaiole) e fi nisce in una piazza sotto una torre (Siena), passa per borghi e palazzi, si nutre di medioevo e Rinascimento, si anima di capitani e ammiraglie, si vanta di fughe e volate. Insomma: eterno ciclismo.

The “Strade bianche” race is the most recent and at the same time the most historical among the classic ones. It can be considered as the earthliest, the most

terrestrial, territorial and ground-to-ground race. It is also the most beloved as far as riders are concerned as well as spectators, both those perched on the stone posts or sprawled on their sofa. The “Strade bianche” is the sole, unique, original event born from amateur cycling riders’ mind, adopted by professionals, plowed by cycling tourists and dreamed by cycling spacemen. It features as well the unpaved Paris-Roubaix, as the gravely Flandres, and the full of holes Milano-Sanremo. It is so old that it already seems a new race and at the same time it is so up to date that it looks like an ancient one. It represents an unexpected prediction, an anticipated nuisance, the good luck of unfortunate people, the delight of unlucky ones but at the same time the bad luck of lucky fellows and the misery of happy ones. The race is altogether an Iliad and an Odyssey, a war and a trip, an adventure full of mishaps, a novel and a movie and – come what may – an unforgettable show. The “Strade bianche” is a maze of country, rustic, peasant roads which never met asphalt, far from traffi c, silent or grumbling, dusty or muddy, all at the same vegetal and mineral, bestial and animal, two-wheeled or four-legged. It features that magical spot in Tuscany, that time-machine when you pedal forward to go backward and where time fl ows forward and backward or forward or backward in a slow and considerate motion, made of more emotion than self-interest, more memory than novelty, more virtuous time than virtual time. It starts in a village in the shadow of a bell-tower (Gaiole) and the fi nishing line is crossed in a square underneath a tower (Siena) along small towns and big palaces loaded with Middle-Ages and Renaissance vestiges, enliven by captains and fl agship cars, boasting breaks and sprints. In a word: timeless cycle racing.

Percorso molto mosso e ondulato sia sul piano planimetrico che altimetrico, privo di lunghe salite, ma costellato di strappi più o meno ripidi. Caratteristica peculiare è la presenza di circa 60 km di strade sterrate divise in 8 segmenti con fondo ben tenuto, ben battuto, privo di incursioni erbose e con scarso brecciolino sulla superfi cie. Partenza da Gaiole in Chianti e superata Siena, al km 35,0 si affronta il primo e più lungo (13,5 km) tratto sterrato piuttosto impegnativo. Dopo un breve intervallo asfaltato, segue il secondo settore (5,5 km) all’interno del bosco altimetricamente meno impegnativo. Superato Buonconvento si affronta la salita di Montalcino unica asperità di giornata (4 km - 5%). Dopo Torrenieri, iniziano i tratti 3 (11,9 km) e 4 (8,0 km) intervallati da solo 1 km di asfalto, entrambi impegnativi, ondulati, molto nervosi e con parecchie curve e saliscendi. Attraversata nuovamente Buonconvento, ci si immette nella ss. 2 “Cassia” per il rifornimento (km 106-109) e si raggiunge Asciano al km 132,4 dove inizia il quinto segmento sterrato di 11,5 km, prevalentemente in salita e caratterizzato da notevoli saliscendi tra i quali vanno citati quelli in prossimità di Monte Sante Marie che raggiungono bruscamente sia in salita che in discesa (su brevi distanze) pendenze molto elevate. A San Giovanni (km 163,7) inizia il settore sterrato n. 6 di 3,3 km prevalentemente in discesa, poi si supera su asfalto Pieve a Bozzone e si affronta il penultimo settore di 2,4 km sulla strada in salita di Colle Pinzuto (pendenze fi no al 15%). Al km 176,7 si incontra l’ultimo tratto sterrato di 1,1 km con una sequenza di discesa secca seguita da una ripida risalita (max 18%) che si conclude alle Tolfe. Mancano poco più di 12 km all’arrivo a Siena in Piazza il Campo.

The route offers a mostly varied and wavy landscape with no extended climb but a series of more or less steep spurts. The peculiar characteristic of Route is the presence of a portion of ca. 60 km of unpaved road split in 8 different segments, with a roadbed in good conditions, well packed ground with no grass invasion and few gravel on the surface. Start from Gaiole in Chianti and once Siena is passed at km 35,0, Routers face the fi rst, longest and quite diffi cult unpaved segment (13,5 km). Following a short asphalted interval, here is the second segment (5,5 km) in the middle of a forest and less diffi cult as regards the altimetry. After crossing Buonconvento comes the climb of Montalcino, sole irregularity of the day (4 km - 5%). Following the passing of Torrenieri, come segments 3 (11,9 km) and 4 (8,0 km), separated by only 1 km of asphalt road, both quite diffi cult, wavy, lively and presenting a good number of bends and up and downs. Route crosses Buonconvento a second time and introduces state road 2 “Cassia” for food supply (km 106-109) reaching Asciano at km 132,4 where the 5th segment of dirt road, long 11,5 km begins, featuring mainly climbing and showing important up and downs among which we wish to insist on those close to Monte Sante Marie, able to reach very quickly, both in climb and in descent (on short distances), very important slants. Unpaved road segment n. 6, 3.3 km long, begins in San Giovanni (km 163,7) and is essentially in descent, then Pieve a Bozzone is crossed on asphalt road and Route faces the last but one segment on a distance of 2,4 km on the steep climb of Colle Pinzuto (slants reaching 15%). At km 176,7 we meet the last dirt road segment on a distance of 1,1 km, with a series of quick descent followed by a steep up climb (max 18%) and a conclusion at the Tolfe. The distance to the fi nish in Siena, on Piazza il Campo, is a little more than 12 km.

Gli ultimi km si snodano per la prima parte all’esterno dell’abitato di Siena su strade larghe e lunghi rettifi li collegati tra loro da ampie curve, prima in discesa e poi in leggera salita fi no ai 2 km dall’arrivo, dove viene imboccata la via Esterna di Fontebranda con pendenze fi no al 9%. A 900 m dall’arrivo si supera la Porta di Fontebranda e inizia la pavimentazione lastricata. La pendenza supera il 10% fi no a raggiungere attorno ai 500 m dall’arrivo, in via Santa Caterina, punte del 16%. Segue una svolta decisa a destra nella via delle Terme e l’immissione in via Banchi di Sotto. Dai 300 m la strada è sempre in leggera discesa. Ai 150 m svolta a destra in via Rinaldini. Ai 70 m si entra in Piazza il Campo, ultimi 30 in discesa al 7%, traguardo pianeggiante.

The last kilometers for their fi rst part follow the outskirts of the city of Siena, along wide, long and straight roads connecting by means of large curves, at the beginning in descent and further on in slight ascent up to 2 km from the fi nish, when Route takes the via Esterna di Fontebranda featuring slants up to 9%. At 900 m from the fi nish, after passing the Porta di Fontebranda, begins the stone pavement. The slant is more than 10%, reaching peaks of as much as 16% in via Santa Caterina, around 500 m from the fi nish. Further on, sharp bend to the right in via delle Terme introducing in via Banchi di Sotto. At 300 m the road presents a slight continuous descent. At 150 m curve to the right in via Rinaldini. At 70 m entry into the Piazza il Campo, last 30 m in descent at 7%, fi nishing line on level road.

GAIOLE IN CHIANTIGaiole in Chianti domina un’area prevalentemente collinare che partendo dai Monti del Chianti digrada verso la valle dell’Arbia. L’abitato si è sviluppato nei secoli lungo la strada che congiunge il Valdarno al Chianti, via di passaggio che, aprendosi, permette una piazza principale, a forma di triangolo allungato, luogo da sempre di mercati. Dal 1215 Gaiole è sede dei traffi ci di derrate e merci, in origine da e per i vicini castelli, tra cui quello di Brolio, caro alla famiglia Ricasoli. Lo stesso Bettino Ricasoli, secondo presidente del Consiglio del Regno d’Italia dopo Cavour, è stato a lungo sindaco di Gaiole nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento. A Gaiole è stato girato il fi lm di Bernardo Bertolucci “Io ballo da sola”. Gaiole fonda gran parte della sua economia sul turismo. Spiccano i 17 agriturismo che la contornano, cui si uniscono i castelli della zona, tutti adibiti all’ospitalità. Qui e nel circondario si gustano piatti semplici e genuini: pasta fresca fatta a mano, carni tipiche (coniglio, agnello, pollame) e la rinomata bistecca Chianina; a seguire formaggi locali di capra e pecora e torte fatte in casa. I vini vedono dominare il Chianti, in una convincente proposta a chilometro zero.

Gaiole in Chianti overlooks a mostly hilly country which departing from the Chianti Mountains, slopes

down slowly towards the Arbia valley. In the course of the centuries the township expanded along the road connecting the Valdarno valley to the Chianti area, an important passage way that opens into a main square in the shape of an extended triangle, dedicated since the ancient times to open-air market place. Since 1215 Gaiole is a trading place for foodstuffs and goods, at fi rst to and from the castles in the neighborhood, such as the famous Baron Ricasoli Broglio castle. That same Bettino Ricasoli, second Prime Minister of the Italian Kingdom following Cavour, held for a long time the position of Gaiole’s Lord Mayor during the second half of the seventeenth century. Gaiole is the location where fi lmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci shot the movie “Stealing beauty” (“Io ballo da sola”). An important part of Gaiole’s economy is based on tourism. Let’s only mention the seventeen holiday farms to be found in the surrounding area, to say nothing of the great number of castles, all equipped to accommodate guests. Gaiole and its neighborhoods are well known for their homely and genuine cuisine: handmade fresh pasta, traditional meat dishes (rabbit, lamb, poultry) and the exquisite Chianina T-bone steak, followed by local goat cheese and home made cakes. As far as wines are concerned, number one is Chianti, a rich choice of which is available on the spot.

SIENA

Gioiello artistico senza pari - il centro storico è interamente patrimonio dell’umanità Unesco - Siena (www.comune.siena.it) è famosa nel mondo anche per il Palio (www.ilpalio.org), corsa di cavalli (montati a pelo, senza sella) tra le diverse contrade cittadine, di scena due volte l’anno. Nell’antichità insediamento etrusco, poi colonia romana, nel medioevo Siena diviene importante grazie alla posizione strategica e all’attività dei suoi banchieri, punto di riferimento per la Chiesa romana. Di fede ghibellina, sono celebri le battaglie di Siena contro Firenze (la vittoria di Montaperti, cantata da Dante, del 1260 e la sconfi tta di Colle Val d’Elsa di nove anni più tardi). Con la peste del 1348 comincia la lenta decadenza della Repubblica senese, caduta poi nelle mani dei Medici (sotto l’egida di Carlo V) nel 1555. Fantastici, a livello architettonico, il Duomo in stile romanico-gotico italiano, il Battistero e la Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata, il Palazzo Comunale con la Torre del Mangia e l’intera Piazza il Campo, senza dimenticare i musei e le numerose ville. Oltre ai dolci tipici - i ricciarelli, il panforte, lo stesso tiramisù sembra sia stato inventato qui - sono di casa la ribollita (zuppa di verdura e fagioli a base di cavolo nero), le specialità a base di cinghiale e i vini, celebrati in tutto il mondo: nel senese si vinifi ca un Chianti sopraffi no (www.chianticlassico.com). Un rosso a tutto pasto, di buona struttura, normalmente a base di uve Sangiovese, talvolta arricchito - al massimo del 20% - da altri vitigni a bacca rossa.

for the Palio (www.ilpalio.org), a horseback riding race (bareback and with no saddle), which takes place twice a year between the various “contradas” which are delimited agonistic districts. In the ancient time Siena was an Etruscan settlement, then a roman colony, and in the Middle Ages thanks to its strategic situation and to the activity of its bankers, became an important crossroad and a point of reference for the roman Church. Of proven Ghibelline creed, the Siena battles against Florence, (the 1260 Montaperti victory celebrated by Dante, and nine years later the defeat of Colle Val d’Elsa) still remain famous. The year 1348 plague is the starting point of a slow decline of the Siena’s Republic, which in 1555 falls into the hands of the Medici’s (under the reign of Charles the 5th). From an architectural point of view the most remarkable monuments are the Duomo, built in Italian Romanesque-Gothic style, the Battistero and the Santissima Annunziata’s Church, the Town Hall with the famous Torre del Mangia and the entire Piazza il Campo, not to mention the many Museums and the numerous number Villas. The local traditional sweets and cakes include the well known - Ricciarelli, the Sienese Panforte, and even the “tiramisu” which seems to be a local creation - not to mention the home made ribollita (a vegetable, beans and black cabbage soup), the wild boar specialty dish, and worldly praised wines: a fi rst class Chianti is made in the Sienese area, (www.chianticlassico.com). This well structured red wine can be served all along the meal, and is usually made of Sangiovese grapes which in some case can be enriched - at a maximum of 20% - with other types of red berries vines.

BUONCONVENTOFamoso per l’avvelenamento di un imperatore (Enrico VII di Lussemburgo, 1313), Buonconvento fa parte del comprensorio delle Crete senesi (in epoca medievale chiamato Deserto di Accona), caratterizzato da un paesaggio collinare spoglio: un’alternanza di calanchi (solchi ramificati sul terreno) e biancane (rilievi a forma di cupola).

Buonconvento is part of the territory of the Sienese Crete, also called Desert of Accona in medieval times, and noticeable for the barren hilly countryside: an alternation of “calanchi” or coves showing deep crevices branching off in the ground, and “biancane”, sort of eminences in a cupola shape.

The city is well-known for the September donkeys’ Palio, where the competitors represent the town’s seven “contradas” or agonistic districts. The Sienese Crete pecorino as well as the Chiusure’s artichokes are tit-bits which can be sampled in the course of the “Sapori delle Crete senesi”, a gourmet convention which takes place every year between April and May.

Art. 2 - Tipo di corsaLa corsa è riservata ai corridori della categoria Hommes Elite ed è iscritta nel calendario UCI Europe Tour. La gara è nella classe 1.1 e conformemente al regolamento UCI attribuisce i seguenti punti per la classifi ca: 1° p.80, 2° p.56, 3° p.32, 4° p.24, 5° p.20, 6° p.16, 7° p.12, 8° p.8, 9° p.7, 10° p.6, 11° p.5, 12° p.3 per la classifi ca UCI Europe Tour.

Art. 3 - PartecipazioneConformemente all’articolo 2.1.005 del regolamento UCI, la corsa è ad invito per le seguenti squadre: UCI Pro Teams, Equipes Continentales Professionnelles UCI e Equipes Continentales UCI.Secondo l’articolo 2.2.003 del regolamento UCI il numero di corridori per squadra è stabilito in un massimo 8.L’Organizzatore, al fi ne di salvaguardare l’immagine e la reputazione della propria gara, si riserva il diritto di rifi utare, fi no al momento della partenza, i corridori o i Gruppi Sportivi che con i propri atti o dichiarazioni dimostrassero di venire meno ai principi di lealtà sportiva agli impegni assunti e previsti dal paragrafo 1.1.023 del regolamento UCI.Inoltre nel caso che i corridori o il Gruppo Sportivo venissero meno, nel corso della manifestazione, ai principi di cui al precedente capoverso, l’Ente Organizzatore si riserva anche il diritto di escluderli dalla corsa in qualsiasi momento.

La conferma dei partenti ed il ritiro dei numeri è dalle ore 15.00 alle 16.45 di venerdì 1 marzo 2013.La riunione dei Direttori Sportivi, organizzata secondo l’art. 1.2.087 del regolamento UCI con il Collegio dei Commissari, avrà luogo venerdì 1 marzo 2013 alle ore 17.00 presso le Ex Cantine Ricasoli, in via Antonio Casablanca a Gaiole in Chianti.

ART. 11 - CerimonialeSecondo l’articolo 1.2.112 del regolamento UCI devono presentarsi al cerimoniale i primi tre della prova 10 minuti dopo il loro arrivo. Il vincitore della gara deve presentarsi in Sala Stampa.

ART. 12 - SanzioniLe infrazioni sono sanzionate secondo la “tabella sanzioni”, art. 12.1.040 del regolamento UCI.

ART. 13 - Disposizioni generaliPossono seguire la corsa solo le persone denunciate all’atto del ritiro dei contrassegni dal titolare del rispettivo automezzo. Eventuali modifi che o aggiunte devono essere notifi cate al Direttore dell’Organizzazione. I conducenti delle auto e delle moto accreditate devono rispettare le norme del Codice della Strada e devono altresì sottostare alle disposizioni del Direttore dell’Organizzazione e dei suoi collaboratori. Non possono seguire la corsa persone che non vi abbiano funzioni riconosciute dagli organizzatori e inerenti ai vari servizi, né persone di minore età. Nessuna responsabilità di nessuna natura fa capo all’Ente organizzatore per i danni derivati da incidenti prima, durante e dopo la corsa a spettatori e persone in genere, anche se estranee alla manifestazione stessa, in dipendenza di azioni non messe in atto dall’organizzazione medesima.

Per quanto non contemplato nel presente regolamento valgono i regolamenti UCI e FCI.

Article 2 - Type of raceThe race is reserved to cyclist riders belonging to the Men Elite Category and is recorded in the UCI Europe Tour calendar. The race falls in the 1.1 class and in compliance with UCI article 2.11.014 the points to be attributed for the UCI Europe Tour place-list are as follows: 1st place 80 points, 2nd place 56 points, 3rd place 32 points, 4th place 24 points, 5th place 20 points, 6th place 16 points, 7th place 12 points, 8th place 8 points, 9th place 7 points, 10th place 6 points, 11th place 5 points, 12th place 3 points.

Article 3 - ParticipationIn compliance with the provisions of article 2.1.005 of the UCI Regulations, the race is reserved upon invitation for the following teams: UCI Pro Teams, UCI Continental Professional Teams and UCI Continental Teams. According to article 2.2.003 of the UCI Regulations the established number of riders per team shall be set in 8 maximum.The Organizer, to the purpose of safeguarding the image and the reputation of its own race, reserves the right to refuse, up to the departure time, the riders of the Sporting Groups who by their acts or declaration would prove to have failed to keep the principles of sport fair play and the commitments undertaken and set forth in paragraph 1.1.023 of the UCI Regulations.Moreover, in the event the riders of the Sporting Group would fail during the event, in complying with the principles set out in the foregoing paragraph, the Organizer shall also reserve the right to exclude them from the race at any time.

Article 4 - Race HeadquartersThe preliminary operations as well as

licences control will take place on Friday, March 1st from 3.00 tp 6.00 pm, on the premises of the Former Ricasoli Cantine - via Antonio Casablanca in Gaiole in Chianti. The confi rmation of the departing riders and the collection of the numbers is due to take place from 3.00 to 4.45 pm on Friday, March 1st , 2013. The Sporting Managers’ Meeting with the College of Commissaires, organized according to the provisions of article 1.2.087 of the UCI Regulations, will take place on Friday, March 1st, 2013 at 5.00 pm, on the premises of the Former Ricasoli Cantine - via Antonio Casablanca in Gaiole in Chianti.

Article 5 - Radio InformationRace news are broadcasted on the 149,850 MHz frequency.

Article 6 - Technical AssistanceThe technical assistance services are ensured by Vittoria with 3 servicing cars.

Article 7 - Feed Zone The Feed Zone will be set up on Route 2 “Cassia” - Ponte d’Arbia km 103-106.

Article 11 - Awards CeremonyAccording to the provisions of article 1.2.112 of the UCI Regulations the fi rst three Riders arrived shall attend the award ceremony 10 minutes after their arrival.The winner of the race shall present himself in the Press Room.

Article 12 - SanctionsApplying sanctions are those set forth in the “sanctions chart” according to article 12.1.040 of the UCI Regulations.

Article 13 - General ProvisionsOnly persons recognized upon collection of the identifi cation sign, by the owner of the relevant motor vehicle are entitled to follow the race. Possible changes or additions shall be notifi ed to the Organization Manager. Drivers of duly identifi ed cars and motorbikes shall comply with the provisions set forth by the Rules of the Road and shall furthermore comply with the provisions set out by the Organization Manager and his collaborators. Persons who are not recognized as having functions acknowledged by the organizers and services related, as well as well as under-age persons, are not allowed to follow the race. The Organization shall not be liable in any way whatsoever for damages deriving from accidents occurred prior, during and after the race to spectators and generally speaking persons, even if unrelated to the race, depending from actions not ascribable to that same organization. For all that is not regulated under the present Regulations the UCI and FCI, shall apply.
