Teacher’s guide ‘The Outsiders – H. E. Hinton’

This teacher’s guide is designed to be used for a class read ‘The Outsiders’ by H. E Hinton. It could be used at VMBO schools at all levels since the story and the questions are very accessible. This teacher’s guide contains all questions and or exercises from the student workbook with the answers and some suggestions for the teacher.

Each student needs to have the reading book (or a copy) plus the student workbook. They have to bring both to each class to work with it and take it home to continue. The book will be read by audio and silent reading. The audio chapters last about half an hour and can therefore be listened to in class after or before filling in / discussing a worksheet.

The pre-reading, reading and after reading exercises mostly speak for themselves. Sometimes students have to answer a question before reading the chapter and then answer the other questions after reading the chapter. When they have to read for themselves they can answer the questions while reading. If it is a quiz, it is recommended to read the chapter first before answering the questions.

With this class read students will improve on their reading skills, will answer different kind of questions about the novel, will form their opinion about some of the themes, will expand their vocabulary and will write short summaries. They will improve on these skills and abilities through audio and silent reading, individual and pair work, keeping up with their homework.

Before starting, please go through the workbook with the students and point out that they have to write a short summary of every chapter. Also they have to write down a maximum of 5 English words that are new to them and find the meaning. There are two different vocabulary worksheets they can choose from. Worksheets 21 – 42 (49 for students) are worksheets where they have to fill in names and or words as the read goes on and write the short summaries. It is highly recommended to remind them of these exercises every class, so it will be almost impossible to forget.

By starting every class with addressing the words students did not know, the summary of the previous chapter and the homework worksheets, the memory of what has been read at home will be refreshed.

This teacher’s guide and workbook are a combination of questions I have found on line. There is a lot more material to be found. Feel free to add or change exercises, questions or quizzes. Have a good class read!

Introduction Pre-reading - Worksheet 1

Explain the concept of a class read. Let the students flip through their workbook and talk about what you expect of them. For instance that they bring their book/copy and workbook to every class. Can they explain why it is important to do the homework and read the chapters at home? If they do not participate, the classes will be very boring since they will not have a clue what it is about. By reading a book together, step by step, it will help them with other books to read.

The book we are going to read is about teenagers between 14 – 20 years old and takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma USA around 1965.

Discuss how they can find the information needed. They can also pair up if they would like. They have to answer these questions before we start reading the book.

1) Do you know anyone who was your age around that time? Grandparents, maybe some teachers you can point out they can go to and ask questions

2) They were born in 1950.

3) What do you think could be different now for teenagers? And what is the same?Different: no cell phones; less freedom; no discussion with parents / teachers, you were to do as you were told (kleine kinderen mogen wel gezien, maar niet gehoord worden); fashion; household equipment; different cars / bicycles; music; etc.Same: puberty, kids growing up, becoming of age, sometimes having to deal with adult issues; they don’t like to be told what to do, but still need some adult guidance every now and then; figuring out who you are and what you would like to do in life; relationships, family, friends and love; etc.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lu0EzaD5iOo high schools in 50s – nowhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1Iyzfq2Dt8 about music, fashion and changes in society

If you would like, you can pair up for this assignment.

4a) What do you know about that time? Find out what is going on around that time period. You can talk to someone you know that was a teenager at that time or you can use the internet and see what you can find. Spend around 15 - 20 on this exercise. Create a small presentation, maybe a PowerPoint and use some YouTube clips. So there will be something to watch in case there is not a lot of material from the homework assignment.

4b) Look for information about Tulsa, Oklahoma around 1965 and what could teenagers do in those days for entertainment? Go to see a movie, not everyone owned a TV; go visit friends; hang out spots where teens would meet, bowling alley, ice cream parlour.

4c) Look for the headlines in that year, in the Netherlands and Tulsa.

Critical Essays Has Society Changed? 1

(Something that might help you discus how society has changed since 1950)

The Outsiders, written in the mid 1960s, makes the reader wonder how, if at all, the story would be different if it were told today. The novel includes the usual references that date a story, generally related to pop culture — for example, models of cars, movies, and music — but those are incidentals, and do not affect the narrative or the outcome.

The first thing to consider is the way in which the story is told. If the story were written today, the author probably would continue to use the first-person narrative, because it is a very effective tool for allowing the reader inside the storyteller's mind. The language would be the same, but it would undoubtedly be heavily laced with expletives. The use of swear words, especially by teenagers, is a show of power and a part of everyday life today. The tolerance level for swearing is at a much higher level than it was in the 1960s; current movies and music demonstrate that shift.

Many of the issues that adolescents in the novel face are still very prevalent today. Teenage suicide, pregnancy, smoking, drinking, and the importance of staying in school are still areas of concern for teens. Perhaps the only area that is missing is illegal drug use. Today, undoubtedly, at least one gang member would be using an illegal drug.

Gangs continue to be a part of our society. Gang initiation is not a topic in The Outsiders, but perhaps today it would be. Gang initiation in the past was something that happened to the prospective member. Today that prospective member is expected to do something to somebody else or something else. The characters in the novel talk little about acquiring new members, because Ponyboy's gang is like family.

Weapons would be more prominent in a contemporary book than in the 1960's version. The prevalence of automatic weapons and the relative ease in acquiring them would definitely make both the greasers and the Socs more dangerous. Sex is not addressed in the novel, with the exception of when Soda's girlfriend has to leave town. S. E. Hinton was only sixteen when she wrote The Outsiders, and presumably she didn't include sex in the novel because her experiences writing as a teenage boy were limited. In today's more open society, the novel would probably include more discussion of this critical issue for teens. A movie made today would definitely cover this issue.

The premise of the whether the authorities will allow the three Curtis brothers to remain together is still viable. The novel makes reference to the need for a clean, respectable house for the imminent visits of social workers. The same procedure would probably be followed today if the boys had no other living relatives.

7

Page 8: Story takes places in a school around 1967, it is about ...yal.weebly.com/uploads/5/1/2/6/5126344/the_outsiders_t…  · Web viewTeacher’s guide ‘The ... Each student needs to

Perhaps the scariest change would be in the way the adults and the adolescents relate. On the whole, the teens in The Outsiders have little or nothing to do with adults. The few times they cross paths, however, the adults are there to help them. When Johnny and Pony are in the country, and Pony stops a local farmer to ask for directions, he answers the questions kindly and without suspicion, and then laughs, "Boys will be boys."

After Johnny's death, Pony leaves the hospital dazed and confused. A man picks him up, and takes him home to his waiting brothers. Today teenagers often frighten adults — especially teenagers who appear to be gang members. Adults assume that a teen who looks like a hood probably has a gun and will use it. Therefore, an adult is usually not going to stop and help a suspicious-looking teen. Teenagers in the l960s knew that whether they wanted help or not, an adult was usually someone they could turn to in a time of need. That is not the case today. Teenagers are usually on their own — truly outsiders.

Pre-reading - Worksheet 2

Discuss worksheet 1, make sure to have some information about that time period in Tulsa Oklahoma. Create a small presentation, maybe a PowerPoint and use some YouTube clips. So there will be something to watch in case there is not a lot of material from the homework assignment.

Introducing the book (again), the title and give the students some time to answer the following questions.

1a) What do you think the title “The Outsiders” means? 2 Let students share.

1b) If you don’t know what it means, how can you figure it out? Look at the word, what kind of word is it? Is it a verb, a noun (people, animal or thing), is it a adjective (bijvoegelijk naamwoord), is it singular – plural, etc?A plural noun.

2a) What part of “The Outsiders” do you know? And what does it mean?out – uit, buiten side – kant outside – buiten (kant) outsider(s) – buitenstaander(s)

2b) If you do not know any of the parts how can you work it out? What can you use?dictionary, internet 2c) Look the word parts up, can you piece it together? What does ‘outsiders’ mean? ‘Buitenstaanders’, check if students know the meaning of the word.

3) Now you know what the title means, what do you think the story might be about? To be on the outside, to not be a part of ….., to be different.

4) Can you relate to being ‘an outsider’? Are you or do you know anyone who is or maybe was an outsider? Let students share (be careful, sensitive subject).

5) Do you know how a student / a person becomes an outsider? What could they do to not be an outsider anymore? Is there something you could do? Let students share (be careful, make sure it does not turn into gossiping about or making fun of other people!)

6) S. E. Hinton is the author, what do you think when you read, see and or hear that name? Describe the person, for example do you think it is a man or woman, tall or short, young or old, where is the author from, etc.? 3 It is a woman, white, short and was born in 1948, Tulsa, Oklahoma (USA), married, one son, still lives in Tulsa.

7) What age do you think the author had when he/she wrote the book? 15 - 17Share with students that the author is Susan Eloise Hinton. She used her initials when publishing the book. Ask students why they think she did this. What actually happened is that her publisher suggested this so that male readers (and reviewers) would not be turned off by a book written by a woman—Hinton decided to continue to use her initials for all her books as a way to separate her public life from her private life.

8) The reason why Hinton wrote the book from an interview: 4

You were a sixteen year-old high school student in Oklahoma when you wrote The Outsiders. Where did you get the idea for the story?

I was actually fifteen when I first began it. It was the year I was sixteen and a junior in high school that I did the majority of the work (that year I made a D in creative writing). One day a friend of mine was walking home from school and these "nice" kids jumped out of a car and beat him up because they didn't like his being a greaser. This made me mad and I just went home and started pounding out a story about this boy who was beaten up while he was walking home from the movies--the beginning of The Outsiders. I was just something to let off steam. I didn't have any grand design. I just sat down and started writing it. I look back and I think it was totally written in my subconscious or something.

9) Do you think it is a book for boys or girls or both? Why do you think that?Let students share.

10

Pre-reading - Worksheet 3

Darry – Sodapop – Cherry – Dally – Ponyboy – Johnny – Bob – Two-Bit – Randy

The story is about two rival gangs and these are names from the book. 1) Can you divide the names into two groups? Who do you think are in a gang with each other? Use a pencil to fill this in! 5

2) How did you choose? Maybe on the sound of the names, or names ending on an –y in one gang or …

Chapter 1 While reading - Worksheet 4

The first chapter will be read in class. You have to read along with the audio book, not just listen to the text. Chapter 1 is a class audio read, choose one to listen to, or find your own link http://www.showme.com/sh/?h=ZnpxREu (a woman reads) or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RovYAXqEkLg (a man reading with southern accent. However the first two lines are not recorded, read them as an introduction). While reading and listening check if students are (still) reading along by stopping the audio and asking a student to read the next sentence.

Underline the names you read, words you do not know and main events which happen. You have to do this every chapter as part of homework! Use the worksheets: 21 – 48 in of this workbook. And fill in the crossword puzzle (worksheet 49).

Check the names above, are they grouped together correctly? If not change it.

Any questions? Or comments? Thoughts about the story you would like to share? Does everyone understand what the story is about so far? Expectations, are you interested in the rest of the story or do you think this story is stupid? And why?

Chapter 1 While reading - Worksheet 5

Underline the names you read, words you do not know and main events which happen. Remember to do this for every chapter in the back of your workbook.

1) Identity the different groups in your class and in school. 6 This will vary per class and school. The students will tell you, they know best.

2a) Are you part of a group? Personal.

2b) What would happen if you would like to be part of another group? Is that possible? Mostly it is not possible, only for the students who are very popular or do not belong to a specific group. They sort of fit in anywhere and nowhere. It could vary per school.

3a) Finish the following statements after reading chapter 1:The best thing about me is that I ….. and the worst thing about me is that I ….. .Personal, it is nice to fill this in and share this with your students.

3b) Do the same for your neighbour in class or your best friend or a family member. The best thing about ….. is that he/she ….. and the worst thing about ….. is that he/she ….. . Personal, it is nice to fill this in and share this with your students.

4a) Pony lives on the East side of town, Socs come from the West side. What are some of the differences between these neighbourhoods? The Greasers live on the East side, the poor side; run down houses, schools, stores, cars, they have no money, mostly come from dysfunctional families. The Socs live on the West side, the rich side; large beautiful homes, kids have a lot of stuff and money, go to private schools.

4b) Are there differences between the East and West part of the Netherlands? If so, what are they and can you explain why?In the East there are smaller towns, more land, more farms, less people, lots of accents, considered to be more stupid, less options when you would like to go out (unless you live in a city), families stay more together. In the West we have bigger cities, lot of people, more industry, more foreigners, they have a different accent, more city people, more office jobs, more cultural activities.

Any questions? Or comments? Thoughts about the story you would like to share? Does everyone understand what the story is about so far? Expectations, are you interested in the rest of the story or do you think this story is stupid? And why?

Chapter 2 While reading - Worksheet 6

Start with discussing the words they did not know and the summary of Chapter 1.

Underline the names you read, words you do not know and main events that happen. Please do this for every chapter in your workbook and fill in the crossword puzzle.

"Leave her alone, Dally."

1a) Who says this? Why is this so unusual for this person?Johnny, he hardly speaks, he almost never speaks out. Surely not to Dally, he is his hero. Johnny worships Dally.

1b) Can you think of a reason why this person speaks out? 7

Dally begins to talk dirty in attempt to embarrass these girls and he does not stop after the girls tell him to. Johnny and Ponyboy think they are nice, pretty Soc girls and do not like Dally being a ‘greaser’ (rude to the girls).

1c) Would you do something like that or have you done in a similar situation? Or would you like to, but are you a bit afraid to do so? Personal.

“I had nearly forgotten that Cherry was listening to me. But when I came back to reality and looked at her, I was startled to find her as white as a sheet."All Socs aren't like that," she said. "You have to believe me, Ponyboy. Not all of us are like that.""Sure," I said."That's like saying all you greasers are like Dallas Winston. I'll bet he's jumped a few people."I digested that. It was true. Dally had jumped people. He had told us stories about muggings in New York that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. But not all of us were that bad.Cherry no longer looked sick, only sad. "I'll bet you think the Socs have it made. The rich kids, the West-side Socs. I'll tell you something, Ponyboy, and it may come as a surprise. We have troubles you've never even heard of. You want to know something?" She looked me straight in the eye. "Things are rough all over.""I believe you," I said.

2a) What do you think is happening here between Ponyboy and Cherry? Even though they are from opposite sides of town, they really see each other for the first time. And they realize they are not that different.

2b) Why do you think Cherry looks ‘as white as a sheet’? She is very shaken up by what Ponyboy is telling her. She realises she knows who has jumped Johnny and hurt him so bad.

I really couldn't see what Socs would have to sweat about—good grades, good cars, good girls, madras and Mustangs and Corvairs—Man, I thought, if I had worries like that I'd consider myself lucky. I know better now.

3) Do you know what Ponyboy means with the last sentence? How come he knows better now? 8

He is telling the story and after everything that happened he knows that the Socs have problems too. Before all the events he could not see what they had to worry about, but now … He has more understanding to their problems.

13

Chapter 3 While reading - Worksheet 7

Start with discussing the words they did not know and the summary of Chapter 2.

Underline the names you read, words you do not know and main events that happen. Please do this for every chapter in your workbook and fill in the crossword puzzle.

1) Consider why life is the way it is for Cherry and Ponyboy using the following model answers: 9

Cherry says that she is searching for something else despite having nothing else to want.

This suggests that she has everything / money.

Ponyboy tells Cherry that Soda’s horse got sold. Soda didn’t make a fuss and Ponyboy saved up in hope of being able to buy it back.

This suggests that life in the Curtis household was poor / no money.

2) What does Cherry explain as the difference between Greasers and Socs? 10

The biggest difference between Socs and Greasers is that Greasers are too emotional and Socs don’t feel enough.

“Ponyboy … I mean … if I see you in the hall at school or someplace …..”

3) What request does Cherry make to Pony? She will not speak to him and that is not personal. She probably doesn’t want Pony to talk to her either and he shouldn’t expect this.

4) Is he understanding? He understands since they are from different social classes.

5) Why do you think it is important to realize that Pony and Cherry “see the same sunset”?Even though they come from different backgrounds, maybe they aren’t so different after all.

6) What happens when Pony comes home after his curfew? Why does this make Pony so upset?Darry yells at him and hits him. No one in his family has ever hit him before. Pony runs away.

Any questions? Or comments? Thoughts about the story you would like to share? Does everyone understand what the story is about so far? Expectations, are you interested in the rest of the story or do you think this story is stupid? And why?

Do you remember what she told the boys?

1) What kind of weapon does Two-Bit give Ponyboy when the Socs harass them?c. a broken bottle

2) Why does Cherry say it is hard for her to please the Socs?a. They already have everything they want or need

3) Cherry says she could easily fall in love with whom?b. Dallas

4) What does Cherry say is a bigger difference between the Socs and the Greasers than money?b. Greasers are more emotional and real

5) Who do the girls agree to let drive them home?d. Two-Bit

Chapter 4 While reading - Worksheet 9

Start with discussing the words they did not know and the summary of Chapter 3.

Underline the names you read, words you do not know and main events that happen. Please do this for every chapter in your workbook and the crossword puzzle.

1) Why do you think Johnny killed Bob? 12

Bob shoved Ponyboy’s face into the fountain and kept it underwater until he was unconscious. Johnny thought for sure they (the Socs) were going to kill Pony and beat him up (again). They also had a blade. The choice between being killed or kill.

2) Do you think you would have reacted differently? Personal

Underline the names you read, words you do not know and main events that happen. Please do this for every chapter in your workbook and fill in the crossword puzzle.

Answer question 1 before reading Chapter 6.

1) When is someone a hero in your opinion? Explain. Personal.A hero (masculine or gender-neutral) or heroine (feminine) is a person or character who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, displays courage or self-sacrifice - that is, heroism - for some greater good; a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. Historically, the first heroes displayed courage or excellence as warriors. The word's meaning was later extended to include moral excellence. 16

Quotes Chapter 6. Write down who said the quote, why and on what page it is. Try to be specific and detailed in your response. You can work in pairs or do 3 quotes by yourself.

2) “She said she felt the whole mess was her fault, which it is, and that she’d keep up with what was comin’ off with the Socs in the rumble and would testify that the Socs were drunk and looking for a fight and that you fought back in self-defense.” 17

Dally talking to Pony and Johnny saying that Cherry is willing to stick up for Johnny and Pony. This is a big deal for a Soc to stick up for a Greaser.

3) “We’re goin’ back and turn ourselves in.”Johnny says this to Dally. Since Cherry is willing to testify, he realizes he could plead self-defense. He wants to get Pony back to his family.

4) “’You don’t know what a few months in jail can do to you. Oh, blast it, Johnny’ – he pushed his white-blond hair back out of his eyes – ‘you get hardened in jail. I don’t want that to happen to you. Like it happened to me…”Dally to Johnny because he doesn’t want him to end up in jail. It shows Dally truly cares for Johnny.

5) “’I swear, you three are the bravest kids I’ve seen in a long time. First you and the black-haired kid climbing in that window, and then the tough-looking kid going back in to save him. Mrs. O’Briant and I think you were sent straight from heaven. Or are you just professional heroes or something?” Jerry Wood (a teacher) is talking to Pony in the ambulance. He judges the boys for their actions not for their classifications. He sees them as heroes, not greasers.

6) “I let go of Soda and stood there for a minute. Darry didn’t like me….he had driven me away that night…he had hit me…Darry hollered at me all the time…he didn’t give a hang about me…Suddenly I realized, horrified that Darry was crying.”Pony says this about Darry at the hospital. Darry was sorry for what he did. He loves Ponyboy and was worried about him.7) Go back to Chapter 4. Pony says, “I figured I couldn’t get into any worse trouble than murder.” How does this foreshadow the events that take place in Chapter 6?

Extra question: 8) Dallas does not help the boys save the children from the fire, but saves Ponyboy and Johnny. What does this show about Dallas’s loyalty? 18

While in the ambulance Pony tells the teacher the entire story of what has happened and what they did. The teacher doesn’t car, he thinks they are heroes. At the hospital, Darry and Soda arrive. They are so relieved to see Pony. Pony realizes how much Darry really does love him and that he was just scared to loose him. Dally is okay but Johnny is in serious condition.

Chapter 7Pony leaves the hospital and drives home with his two brothers. They are so glad to be together. Pony falls asleep on the way and Darry and Soda have to carry him in the house. The next morning Darry and Soda go to work and Pony hangs out with Two-Bit. Two-Bit shows Pony an article in the paper about how they are heroes. Pony and Two-Bit stop to get a coke and one of the Socs with the Blue mustang comes in and wants to talk to Pony. They go outside to his car and talk. His name is Randy and he tells Pony how he is not going to go to the Rumble and all about Bob’s problems at home. He thinks the fighting won’t do any good. He tells Pony that he would have never been brave enough to go in the burning church and pull out the children. Pony sees a human side to a “Soc”. Randy says “Thanks Greaser”. Pony says, “mine name is Pony”.

Chapter 8Two-Bit and Pony go to the hospital to visit Johnny. He is real bad! Johnny’s mother shows up and Johnny doesn’t want to see her, gets upset and passes out. Pony and Two-Bit go to see Dally. He wants to leave the hospital to fight in the rumble and asks for Two-Bit's knife. They take the Bus home. When they get off they see Cherry, she tells them that the Socs won’t bring weapons to the rumble and promise to fight by the Greasers Rules. Two-Bit goes home and Pony stays longer to talk to Cherry. He is upset that she won’t go to see Johnny. She explains that she doesn’t agree with Bob, but Johnny killed Bob. She tells
