sure washing it and grinding the areas with the thickest accumulation of paint. We also thinned the new paint considerably.

But probably the most important step we took was applying the paint before

the hot weather set in. Con-sequently, we had to shut the pool area down twice during the spring break time of year. We tried to time the shutdown during days when the spring visitors seemed to have ebbed, but I know we

disappointed a few folks. I appreciate the understanding shown by all the people to whom I talked.

The result was a suc-cess. The newly painted deck looks great and no bubbles!

Security ServiceMost of you know there

is a security company patrol-ling the community seven nights a week from 5:15 PM to 5:15 AM. The patrol personnel carry a cell phone: 602-434-0940. If you see a

crime in action or a poten-tial crime call 911, then call security. But if you see a suspicious vehicle, or kids playing where they shouldn’t be, or hear a suspicious noise, call security and they will check it out.

Remember, security is not a substitute for the po-lice. The security personnel cannot arrest anyone. They cannot trespass on private property. But they will call police if needed and they can get people to disburse who

shouldn’t be here.I often get comments

from people who say that security never goes down their street. With today’s GPS technology, I can tell you with confidence that security is hitting every area every night.

However, if you have questions or concerns about the actions of our security service call me or send me an email as soon as possible after the incident so I can investi-gate it while it is still fresh.

BIBLE STUDYBy: Ardella Burtman

There is a community Bible Study every Friday morning at 9 AM in the Supersti-tion Room. This is an interdenominational study open to men and women. We are careful to keep the class to one hour. There is no charge and no book to buy. Please bring your Bible -- any translation will do.

Early in March we began a detailed study of Genesis. This is a verse by verse study and we will be reading the entire book in class. We anticipate the class will take anywhere from 6 to 9 months. We see no need to keep a schedule, so we will proceed as time and comments permit. Sylvia Hansen is the teacher.

The Bible study will continue throughout the summer months. The only days we do not meet are official holidays, such as the 4th of July, Christmas, etc. You are invited to join us for this study of the book of Genesis – the “beginning of beginnings” -- which is so important to the study of the Bible. Even if you have missed some classes or know you will miss some classes you are welcome. Naturally, there is some building of content one class on the next, but also, in a sense, each class stands alone.

If you have any questions about the Bible study, please call Ardella Burtman at 480.993.3102.

VILLAGE VOICE

OF HOPEBy Milton Zeeb, Pastor

In our present world, it appears that the Power of Positive and the Weakness of Negative is in reverse. With this in mind, one need not wonder why there appears to be so much negativism ruling over positive. Truth is: the negative voice is heard because the positive voice is often silent. One need only listen ten minutes

to a newscast and very few words of the positive are heard. The positive is now known by “Special Report!” Peter, a disciple of Jesus, wrote, “It is God’s will, that by doing good you should silence the ‘Ignorant talk of foolish men.’” (I Peter 2:15) The goodness of God always overrides expressions of an evil world.

People discover the goodness of the Lord in re-demption, to be the positive voice heard in our world. Following what is known to every Christian as the Day of Pentecost, the promised

Holy Spirit came upon all who confessed Christ. They were empowered to witness to their faith in a negative world. The positive power is the Holy Spirit alive in our 21st century. He lives in the person of faith and not in the world. It is He, who enables a positive word for a negative world! Negativism is the spirit of this present age, and it is the rule of him who is prince of this age, Satan. This positive message, a personal assignment from God, is re-ality for everyone who finds the joy of the positive word in God’s son, Jesus.

As residents of SSV, you are invited to attend Springs Chapel in worship every Sunday of the year in the beautiful SSV Auditorium, at 9:00 AM. Springs Chapel is non-denominational and true to the Spirit of Truth, as revealed in God’s word and personified in God’s son, Jesus Christ. I pray God to bless you as you focus your life on the positive message of Christ, the Lord.

SUNLAND SPRINGS VILLAGE HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATIONMonthly Manager Meeting Minutes - April 26, 2011

SSV AuditoriumPresenter: John Lippert, SSV HOA Manager Jeff Decker-Vice President SSV HOA Board

The Sunland Springs Village Master HOA Meeting was called to order at 9:35AM by Manager John Lippert.

Mr. Lippert reviewed the March 31, 2011 Financial Sum-mary report, which had been distributed to the audience. He noted that $690,544 was in the Operating Funds, and more would be coming in as sales of homes close. Maintenance Fee income for the month was $7,018, which was much over budget due to his collection efforts. There are only eight of 1,860 homes still delinquent. Working Capital was under budget for the month but over budget for the year. Transfer Fee is over budget due to the number of resales.

In reviewing the expenses, Mr. Lippert reported that Landscaping is under budget, but with the completion of the new areas on Guadalupe for Phase 7, this expense will increase approximately $720 per month for maintenance of these spaces.

In response to a query on the security expense and the areas it patrols, Mr. Lippert said that there are actually four bosses: The HOA, Farnsworth Construction, the Sales Of-fice, and the RV lot. As it is projected that there will be no subsidy payment from Farnsworth this year, this matter will be reviewed further.

A resident in the area south of Guadalupe, complained that the retention basins and other common areas are becom-ing very weedy and trees and shrubs need trimming. The landscapers are aware of this and are working toward that section of the Village.

Another resident queried why Springwood was only resurfaced to Medina. Mr. Lippert responded that the City of Mesa is responsible for repaving the streets. They do not advise him when or what streets they will be doing.

In his Manager’s report, Mr. Lippert reported the fol-lowing:

• Repainting of the pool deck is in progress. The pool will be closed for two days for the painting of the area from the showers to the edge of the pool.

• A corroded pipe on the fire riser in the auditorium was repaired for $750. Also the fire extinguishers and alarm system in the auditorium were serviced and tested

• An ozone cleaning system has been installed at no cost in the spa by Paddock Pools. It is being monitored closely.

• Two of the 15” cardio theaters (TV) screens in the Fitness Center were replaced at a cost of $500 each.

• The salt system controller on the lap pool was re-placed for $860.

• The landscaping has been installed along Guadalupe. These areas will add approximately $800 to the landscaping fees.

Mr. Decker stated that the landscaping for the spec homes being built by the softball field is being paid by Farnsworth.

A resident asked if Security was to call residents to alert them that their garages doors were left open, and yes, they should.

Mr. Decker reported that sales are about the same as last year. Another fourplex will begin construction in June at the south end of Golf III, as well as another Town Home. All three areas currently under construction are going well.

Mr. Decker stated that Signal Butte is being widened to a four-lane road from Baseline to Elliott. It should be com-pleted by late fall.

The San Tan Rec Center plans are still waiting for the City of Mesa to issue permits. Farnsworth is ready to go with the underground work as soon as the permits come through.

A question was asked about the screens and big trees planted at Hole 6 on the San Tan Course. Mr. Decker re-sponded that several windows have been broken and other damage caused by errant golf balls. Hopefully, this will take care of the problem.

There being no further business to come before the HOA, the meeting adjourned at 9:53 AM.

Respectfully submitted,Jane E. Harrel, Recording Secretary

IT’S THAT TIMEOF YEAR AGAIN

By Mike Tucker, Security CommitteeWe change our daily living habits, tending to cut back

our outdoor activities and spend more time inside as we enter another Arizona summer. Most of our winter residents have already re-established themselves in their alternate homes, and many of us who call Arizona home all year long, tend to retreat to the mountains for weeks at a time. Yes, Sunland Springs Village is a different world during the summer. Those of us who remain at SSV during the summer assume the heightened responsibility of becoming the eyes and ears for all of our neighbors who have chosen to be away from their homes for extended periods of time.

Unfortunately, there are dishonest people who prey upon communities like ours, looking for an opportunity to take advantage of unoccupied dwellings. Evidence they look for include:

• clutter in the driveways and porches, • lack of inside lighting at night, • drawn blinds and shutters all day long, • extended periods of inactivity, • changes in landscape activities. Once convinced that they have an opportunity, they

seize it. We are a vigilant community of neighbors looking out for

neighbors. You can prevent crime by being observant. Help yourself and your neighbor by removing fliers, papers, phone-books, etc., for those folks who are away. Keep an eye out for suspicious individuals and vehicles, report individuals who are going door-to-door posing as solicitors. Burglars often go door-to-door knocking on doors to see if anyone will answer. If the resident comes to the door, the burglar will usually be prepared with a cover story. If no one answers, the burglar has determined that no one is home. Looking out for your neigh-bor is actually a self-protection defense. Your vigilance can lessen the possibility that a criminal mistakenly (or otherwise) chooses your home as the target of their activity.

Report all daytime suspicious incidents to the HOA office (480-354-8758). After hour observations should be reported directly to our contracted security firm (602-434-0940). Suspi-cious incidents may be reported to the Mesa Police department (480-644-2211) at anytime.

By: Jane E. Harrel, EditorOh, what a month we have before us. June is not only the month to celebrate graduations, but also it is Candy Month,

Fight the Filthy Fly Month, National Accordion Awareness Month as well as Turkey Lovers Month. The first week in June is Fishing Week followed by Email Week in the second. Special days that you might want to celebrate are:

June 1 Flip a Coin Day June 3 National Doughnut Day Repeat Day (I said “Repeat Day”) June 4 Hug Your Cat Day June 8 Name Your Poison Day June 18 National Hollerin’ Contest Day National Splurge Day June 19 World Sauntering Day June 22 National Chocolate Éclair Day June 30 Meteor Day

The list is much longer than above, with every day having something special. Oh, did we forget to list Flag Day on June 14 and Father’s Day on June 20? You are probably aware of these dates, but here is a little history:

FLAG DAY, June 14, 2011: We all know the story of Betsy Ross, but did you know that George Washington wanted to have a six-pointed star? Betsy

advocated for a five-pointed star, which could be cut with just one quick snip of the scissors, and George and his boys were won over.

The first official national flag, also known as the Stars and Stripes, was approved by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. The blue canton contained 13 stars, representing the original 13 colonies, but the layout varied. Although nobody knows for sure who designed the flag, it may have been Continental Congress member Francis Hopkinson.

After Vermont and Kentucky were admitted to the Union in 1791 and 1792, respectively, two more stars and two more stripes were added to the flag in 1795. This 15-star and 15-stripe flag was the “star-spangled banner” that inspired lawyer Francis Scott Key to write the poem that later became the U. S. National anthem.

In 1818, after five more states had gained admittance, Congress passed legislation fixing the number of stripes at 13 and requiring that the number of stars in the blue canton to equal the number of states. The last new star, bringing the total to 50, was added on July 4, 1960, after Hawaii became a state.

FATHER’S DAY, June 20, 2011:Father’s Day was inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother’s Day, honoring not only father-

hood but also to commemorate our forefathers. On June 19, 1910 an independently-invented Father’s Day observance was celebrated through the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. It was then that members of the YMCA wore a rose to church—a red rose honoring a living father or a white rose to honor a deceased one.

A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913, but it wasn’t until 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed it into law establishing the third Sunday in June as an observance of Father’s Day.

Father’s Day is celebrated through out the world on different days and under different names, but it has the same mean-ing—to honor the male parent.

So don’t forget to display the American Flag on Tuesday, June 14, and the following Sunday buy Dad a nice tie.HAPPY FATHER’S DAY TO ALL SUNLAND SPRINGS VILLAGE’S GRANDFATHERS, FATHERS and STEP-

TAXPAYER’S SOUP KITCHENPhotos and Captions by Marge and Bob Card

The Taxpayers Soup Kitchen seated 283 persons to a delicious bowl of vegetable beef soup and a big serving of good bread pudding. Second servings of both were available and lots of folks took advantage of them. The whole affair was prepared by fourteen volunteers who worked two full days to complete the preparations. Eighty pounds of beef went into the soup along with many dozens of cans of vegetables all donated by the residents as their price of admission. Each table was prepared with fancy newspaper table coverings along with exotic vases of vegetable cans holding wild flowers and a few domestic types. Everyone was herded around the room to get their soup and pudding. It was all fun.

Those volunteers as pictured are (left toright) Nancy Bradshaw, Marg Ehnert, Elaine Brunkhorst,HelenBiteman,BettyZeilinger,Al Brands, Alice Brands, Pat Ford, Jan Jelley, EdBrunkhorst, andBobShields.

SSV COMPUTER CLUBBy Jane E. Harrel, Vice President, Programs, [email protected]

Have you converted all of your VHS tapes to DVDs? If not, the Computer Club has a machine you can borrow that makes this copy procedure a breeze. Call Jane Harrel, 214-5264, to schedule an appointment to bor-row the machine. We will bring it to you, show you how to use it, and leave it with you to copy to your heart’s content. You do have to dub the videos in “real” time, so depending on the number of tapes you have to copy will determine how long you need the device.

We are still meeting during the summer to demonstrate various computer programs and how to use them. Come to the Superstition Room and join in the fun the first and third Wednesdays of May through September. So far this hot season, we have gone into depth with Excel and how to set up a data base of addresses, use the data base for mailing labels, a simple budget or tracking of monthly expenses, downloading a bank statement, record of medications, and so many other ways that you can use Excel. We will also be doing some work in Word and Power Point.

If you are having problems with your computer, joining us on these dates would be a great time to decipher what is wrong and if we can fix it. We have some really smart gurus in our Club. No dues are charged, business meetings held, and no attendance taken. So come to the Superstition Room any first or third Wednesday of the month to give us a test drive. Hope to see you soon.

“Serving your new home needs for over a decade. I’m now available to help serve all

your real estate needs”

Interest rates have recently increased on 30 year fi xed mortgages. When this happens the benfi t amount, or the amount of money available to seniors who qualify for a reverse mortgage can be lowered. In fact if you have been considering a reverse mortgage then the time to do so would be soon, or even better right now. “Over the past 4 weeks we have seen mortgage interest rates rise dramatically. If the interest rates continue to climb, we will see a signifi cant decrease in the amount of money seniors can get out of their reverse mortgage. We are trying to get as many customers locked in and closed before this happens to maximize the amount of money they can receive.” said Parker Turk of Sun American Mortgage. The good news for seniors is that some recent government changes have allowed seniors to qualify to get more money in their pocket through new calculations. In fact, some mortgage bankers like Sun American Mortgage, one of Arizona’s largest independent Mortgage Bankers, have even sliced their own closing costs and eliminated their origination and servicing fees to put even more money back into the hands of seniors who qualify for a reverse mortgage. A reverse mortgage allows people who are

62 years old and older to convert their home equity into cash without ever having to make another payment and with no out of pocket expenses. Instead of the homeowner writing a check to the bank each month, the bank now pays the homeownerwho can elect to receive a lump sum, a line of credit or monthly payments. One of the biggest criticisms of reverse mortgages has been the fees, which before the new changes could have totaled up to 5% of a home’s value. But the new cuts in fees mean that some homeowners can save $15,000 or more on the closing costs. Parker Turk, from Sun American Mortgage also explained more about these savings. “The new calculations allow more seniors to qualify for a Reverse Mortgage. Over the past 12 months, many people that have called seeking fi nancial relief just didn’t have enough equity in their home, but with the new government changes people are revisiting a Reverse Mortgage as an option and are fi nding out they now qualify. In addition, at Sun American Mortgage we cut our origination fees, servicing fees, and are now able to cut their closing costs putting that money directly back into their pocket.” The new changes also brought about some new programs to allow seniors

more fi nancial options than ever. Parker Turk explained that “there is a new Reverse Mortgage Product called a Reverse Mortgage Saver. It works just like a home equity line of credit without ever having to make a monthly payment. The upfront fees on this program have been slashed and it is now one of the most attractive fi nancial options available to seniors. Seniors who are interested taking a look at these new programs should do so as soon as possible to take advantage of some of the greatest benefi ts.” Parker also said “Remember that when you are looking into a Reverse Mortgage it is recommended that you fi nd a local business with a great reputation. Sun American Mortgage is a Farnsworth company and wrote the fi rst reverse mortgage in the state of Arizona over 20 years ago.”

Ronald McDonald House TourBy Dick Paulin

On Tuesday, May 3, 2011, 19 of our residents took 29 buckets of tabs (447,884) and $1,031.24 to the Ronald McDonald House in Phoenix. After presenting the cash and tabs to the Director of Development, Tamara Bohannon, we were given a tour of the facility by Tami. After the tour Tami met us at the new Ronald McDonald House next to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. There Nate showed us some of the rooms. Everyone had a good time and were really impressed with what families can expect when they have to stay at the “house.”

The residents of Sunland Springs Village can be very proud of what we have accomplished since September 2007. We have collected 1,609,088 tabs (1,270 pounds) and $2,933.21. Plan now to make another trip to the “house” on the first Tuesday in May 2012.

KARAOKE PARTYBy Lyn Mineo

You really felt the festive at-mosphere as we celebrated Cinco de Mayo and enjoyed the music, food and dancing. Ole! Doris Havelka and Pat Wohland brought all the fixing for tacos. Ronnie Cohen, Kathy and Joe Fellhouer dressed for the occasion. When Ronnie threw her sombrero on the floor, a few of us tried the Mexican Hat Dance. Monica and Ivan Stein dedicated romantic love songs to each other for their 21st anniversary. The boys serenaded us with “Margaritaville” and Jim Hazel had the salt. It was a fun filled night!

Lights, action, microphone. It’s a Karaoke Party sing-a-long explosion! So don’t wait…pencil in the date… Bring your relatives and friends and join your neighbors on Friday, June 3 in the Su-perstition Room from 7 – 9 PM. Don’t be shy … Give it a try! Guests are always welcome. $1.00 at the door. Bring your own drink and a snack to share.

FYI: All Karaoke Parties will now be on the first Friday of the month, with exception of July and November when we will be hosting a Potluck. The Karaoke Club will be hosting the Fourth of July Hot dog and Brat Potluck, and on November 6 the Veterans’ Day Potluck. See flyers for information.
