Story of Parks

Hello Again!

A big welcome as always to new readers this month! The winter is now upon us, and we have been making the best of the cold weather and dark evenings, by huddling away preparing for next years events & activities. This month saw our first volunteer induction, a wonderful talk about the Arch of Remembrance in Victoria Park and we are still searching for your park memories. The project team would also like to thank you all for your interest and support this year. This newsletter goes out to well over 200 people, and we look forward to this number growing in the new year!

What’s been happening?

On the 12th November Liz Blood from Leicestershire County Council gave a wonderful talk about imposing Arch of Remembrance situated in Victoria Park, designed by Edwin Lutyens who also designed the park lodges and historic gates.

It was fascinating to hear the historical background of memorials in general and some of the various memorials that we have in the city and the county. We would like to thank Liz for her fascinating talk, and for those who attended for the wonderful questions and discussions we had afterwards!

A big thank you to the volunteers who attended the first induction for our oral history project. Having attended a training session a few weeks ago, they are now ready and raring to go! It is not too late to join us, we will be running another induction and training session in the new year. Contact us to register your interest, and you will be invited to the sessions.

The project team gave an early morning presentation with the Rotary Club of Leicester De Montfort, about the Story of Parks project. Thank you to the Rotary Club for their warm welcome and lovely feedback. If you would like us to come and talk to a group you are part of, we would be very happy to do so, just get in touch!

‘Our Parks’ Induction

Rotary Club presentation

I would like to thank everyone who has registered their interest or come to one of our training events so far. We have had over 100 people enquire about our volunteer roles so far with almost half this number registering as a volunteer. I hope we can build on this number in the new year!

What’s on!

This month will see the launch of ‘Our Parks’ – the oral history strand of the Story of Parks project. Two groups of volunteers have successfully been trained in how to record the memories of local people. There is still time to join and develop these skills if you would like to!

Talk Parks

We take a break this month in the run up to Christmas from the monthly talks but do not fear! We have a whole programme of talks starting at the end of January, taking us through the whole year. Keep an eye on the monthly newsletters, the local press and the City Council’s Parks Facebook page, where details of these talks will be posted.

Our Parks

We will be holding another induction in the new year. If you would like to join us, just let us know and you will be invited to the session.

Volunteer Opportunities

Our Parks

Story of Parks looks to tell the history of our local parks through the stories and memories of the local people who use them. To do this, we need a team of interviewers who will be fully trained in how to record memories of our parks. If you would like you get involved as a volunteer, or you or someone you know could provide memories – please get in touch.

New Year, New Skills! If your New Years Resolution is to develop new skills, become more active in the community, or spend more time volunteering, then we can help!

Story of Parks wants to uncover the hidden histories of our local parks, and will be creating a team of volunteer researchers to help achieve this. Free training will be delivered at Leicestershire Records Office, and information found will be collected and used to create new heritage panels across the parks, website content, leaflets and educational activities.
