The three little pigs• Listen to the story “The Three Little Pigs”.

Can you identify the story elements?• What are story elements?

Characters

– A character is a person, or sometimes even an animal, who takes part in the action of a short story or other literary work.

– Think of the story The Three Little Pigs. Who are the main characters.

– Did you come up with the pigs and the big bad wolf?

Setting

• The setting of a short story is the time and place in which it happens. Authors often use descriptions of landscape, scenery, buildings, seasons or weather to provide a strong sense of setting.

• Look at the settings above. Which one do you think represents the Three Little Pigs?

• Did you choose the country scene?

Plot• The plot of series a story is the of events created by the author to tell

the story. Plot may be discussed in terms of rising action, climax, and falling action.

• Rising action – is events that happen before the climax .

• Climax – is the highest point of interest in a story and it is the point at which one (or more) of the conflicts is resolved. If there is more than one conflict in the story, there may be more than one climax.

• Falling action – is events that happen after the climax usually leads to the end of the story.

• Pause and think. Discuss the plot of “Three Little Pigs”.

Conflict• The conflict is a struggle between two people or things. The

main character is usually on one side of the central conflict. • On the other side, the main character may struggle against

another important character, against the forces of nature, against society, or even against something inside himself or herself (feelings, emotions, illness).

• Can you identify the conflict of today’s story?

Point of View• The definition of point of view is the identity of the narrative voice.

Essentially, it is the person through whom the reader experiences the story.

• There are 3 types of point of view:

1. First person point of view: the narrator participates in the action and refers to himself/herself as “I”.

2. Second person point of view: not frequently used; the “you” in directions, explanations or arguments

3. Third person point of view: the narrator is not a character in the story, and refers to the characters as “he” or “she” as the events are told
