GAME 16: At HARTFORDLEAGUE PLAY The Seawolves are currently in their 17th season of America East play, sitting at 141-120 in regular season league action. They advanced to their eighth straight America East Playoff semifinal following a second-place finish last season. Stony Brook has opened conference play with a victory in each of the last 10 seasons.

RUTGERS OVERTIME THRILLER The Seawolves pulled off a big overtime win at Rutgers after junior Jaron Cornish made a steal and hit a three with three seconds left in regulation to tie it. Senior Jakub Petras was the late hero, making a jumper from the elbow with .6 seconds left in overtime for the 75-73 win. This was the first win over a Power 5 team for the Seawolves since topping then-No. 13 Washington on the road, 62-57, in 2015. It was also the second win in program history over a Big Ten opponent as they topped Penn State on the road, 59-51, in 2006.

STONY BROOK IN OVERTIME The Seawolves are 14-12 all-time in overtime games after the 75-73 win at Rutgers. This was the first overtime game for the Seawolves since taking Vanderbilt to extra time early in the 2015-16 season.

WARNEY HONORED BY USA BASKETBALL Former Stony Brook standout Jameel Warney was named USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year on Friday, Dec. 15. Warney helped USA Basketball earn a gold medal at the FIBA AmeriCup 2017 over the summer and was named MVP of the tournament. He is currently playing for the Texas Legends of the NBA G League. Warney stands as the all-time leader in points (2,132), rebounds (1,275) and blocks (276) at Stony Brook, after helping the program to its first America East Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance.

YEBOAH GOES FOR 30 Redshirt sophomore Akwasi Yeboah scored a career-best 30 points in the win at Columbia. This was the first time a Stony Brook player has scored 30-plus points in a game since Jameel Warney scored 43 points in the 2016 America East Championship game.

DOWN TO THE WIRE Stony Brook was able to pull off the come-from-behind victory over St. Francis as senior Tyrell Sturdivant battled through his defender to bank in a layup with five seconds on the clock. It was a three from Cornish that tied things at 83-all and Sturdivant was able to draw a charge and get the ball back after St. Francis broke the Seawolves’ press with ease. Cornish and Yeboah used double-digit scoring second halves to lead the way and position Stony Brook for the victory.

SEAWOLVES DOMINATE SHAWNEE STATE Stony Brook took down Shawnee State 101-58. This is

the first time the Seawolves have scored over 100 points since topping USMMA, 103-32, on Nov. 14, 2015, and earned its first 40-plus point win since a 91-42 victory over Farmingdale State on Nov. 28, 2015. Senior Bryan Sekunda led five players in double figures with 21 points, including six threes.

SPARK OFF THE BENCH Freshman Elijah Olaniyi has led the Stony Brook bench through non-conference play. He came alive at Michigan State, scoring 16 points, including a personal 10-0 run in the first half. Olaniyi was named America East Rookie of the Week in back-to-back weeks during his five-game streak of double-figure scoring.

STRONG AT HOME In their fourth season playing in Island Federal Credit Union Arena, the Seawolves are 41-13 at home. Stony Brook is 10-9 in home openers, claiming four of their last five.

IROEGBU, SAINTEL NOTCH CAREER NUMBERS Seniors UC Iroegbu and Junior Saintel led the way at Ball State with career-best performances. Iroegbu put up 18 points in the win and tallied three assists, all on lobs to Saintel at the rim. Saintel notched the second double-double of his career with 16 and 10 in the game.

STONY BROOK FROM RANGE The Seawolves have made at least nine threes on seven occasions this season. The team reached double figures in makes from beyond the arc six times, most recently knocking down 10 against Norfolk State.

STURDIVANT HEATS UP IN OPENER Sturdivant had a hot shooting night in the season opener against Maryland as he led the way with 17 points. Sturdivant knocked down a career-high three threes in the game. He entered the year with just one make on one attempt from beyond the arc in his pervious three seasons.

YEBOAH AT FIBA CHAMPIONSHIPS Yeboah returned home to England over the summer to play for the country’s U20 team in the FIBA European Championships. The Chigwell native averaged 14.3 points and 4.7 boards as he helped his team to a Bronze medal.

CHALLENGING START The Seawolves started the 2017-18 season with four straight road games. Through the team’s first six games they faced four teams that went to the post season a year ago, including three NCAA Tournament teams - Maryland, Michigan State and Bucknell. Michigan State entered the year as the No. 2 team in the nation, boasting the same ranking at the Nov. 19 meeting.

GAME 16: At HARTFORD

Jeff Boals was named head men’s basketball coach at Stony Brook University by Director of Athletics Shawn Heilbron on April 9, 2016. He arrived at Stony Brook after spending seven seasons as an assistant coach at Ohio State.

In his first season with the Seawolves, Boals led Stony Brook to a second-place finish in America East, beginning league play with five straight victories. The Seawolves earned a spot in the post season for the sixth straight year with an appearance in the CBI.

A member of Thad Matta’s staff from 2009-16, Boals helped guide Ohio State to seven postseason appearances, including six NCAA Tournaments. The Buckeyes, who won or claimed a share of three Big 10 titles, advanced to the Final Four in 2012. Ohio State went 193-62 during Boals’ time in Columbus.

Boals was instrumental in bringing some of the top players in the nation to Ohio State, including current NBA stars Jared Sullinger and D’Angelo Russell, along with Aaron Craft, the all-time steals and assist leader in Ohio State history. He also coached the 2010 National Player of the Year, Evan Turner, during his outstanding collegiate career with the Buckeyes.

Prior to Ohio State, Boals spent three seasons at Akron, serving as the team’s recruiting coordinator and working with the post players. The Zips advanced to three Mid-American Conference championship games, winning the title in 2009. It was Akron’s first NCAA Tournament berth since 1986. Boals also recruited Anthony “Humpty” Hitchens, a MAC All-Freshman Performer, and Zeke Marshall, a top-35 national recruit.

Boals spent two seasons (2004-06) at Robert Morris and four years (1999-2003) at Marshall. In his final season at Robert Morris, the Colonials posted their first winning record in 15 seasons. He also spent a total of four seasons at Division II University of Charleston in two different stints.

A 1995 graduate of Ohio University, Boals was a two-time captain and four-year letterwinner for the Bobcats, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1994. The following year, Ohio University won the Preseason NIT Championship after wins over Ohio State and No. 14 Virginia, as well as George Washington and New Mexico State at Madison Square Garden.

Boals and his wife, Katie, have two children, Sydney and Chase.

GAME 2UCONN 72, STONY BROOK 64

TUES., NOV. 14, 2017 | HARTFORD, CONN.

KEYS TO THE GAME:- The Seawolves used a 9-2 run early on to earn two-possession lead that they would keep for much of the first half. UConn made it close on multiple occasions and briefly went ahead with under five minutes remaining until the break, but senior Junior Saintel laid one in to put Stony Brook back on top. - Senior Bryan Sekunda dropped in three threes in the first half and Stony Brook scored the final five points of the opening period to take a 31-25 lead into the break. - Senior UC Iroegbu hit a three to put the Seawolves up eight to start the second half, but UConn’s full-court pressure forced Stony Brook to call an early timeout.- The two teams traded buckets for much of the half, until senior Tyrell Sturdivant went back-to-back from beyond the arc to give the Seawolves their larges lead of the night, up nine with 5:37 to play.- The Huskies called a timeout after the threes and were able to knock down one of their own following the break in action that would spark a closeout run.- UConn tallied a 14-0 run in the final minutes of play before the Seawolves were forced to foul late.

GAME 6BUCKNELL 85, STONY BROOK 76SUN., NOV. 26, 2017 | STONY BROOK, N.Y.

KEYS TO THE GAME:- Stony Brook jumped out to a 9-2 lead early in the game and did not relinquish the lead until Bucknell hit a three with 6:54 remaining in the first half.- The Bison scored nine straight points to break up the close score that had themed much of the first half, and eventually took a nine-point lead into the break. - Three quick turnovers by Stony Brook and back-to-back buckets for the Bison to start the second half got the difference to double figures for the first time in the game and forced an early Stony Brook timeout.- The Seawolves got back within six after senior Tyrell Sturdivant knocked down a three immediately following the media timeout, but Bucknell quickly responded with nine straight points of its own.- Stony Brook kept the difference to single digits for much of the closing minutes of the game, but could only get as close as five as the Bison had an answer for everything the Seawolves did.

GAME 8STONY BROOK 85, ST. FRANCIS 83

SAT., DEC. 2, 2017 | STONY BROOK, N.Y.

KEYS TO THE GAME:- Down by 18 at the break, the Seawolves got the difference within single digits with under five minutes to play.- A layup by redshirt sophomore Akwasi Yeboah followed by another bucket in the paint from freshman Elijah Olaniyi made it a two-posses-sion game with 2:13 to play.- The Seawolves fouled with 1:35 on the clock and St. Francis’ Keith Braxton hit one of two from the line.- It was Yeboah that tied it at 83-all with 1:25 to play after he was fouled down low and converted the three-point play.- The Red Flash broke Stony Brook’s late press with ease as the clock went under a minute, but senior Tyrell Sturdivant (Chester, Pa.) was able to get stop in transition as he drew a charge with 35 seconds remaining.- Sturdivant came up big for the Seawolves on the final possession as he battled through his defender and laid one in with seven seconds left in regulation to put Stony Brook on top. GAME 9LIU BROOKLYN 75, STONY BROOK 71

MON., DEC. 4, 2017 | BROOKLYN, N.Y.

TUES., DEC. 12, 2017 | STONY BROOK, N.Y.

KEYS TO THE GAME:- Much like the start to the game, Stony Brook jumped out to an early lead to begin the second half. The Seawolves were forced to foul in the final seconds and Hofstra missed both free throws, but Stony Brook’s final shot did not fall.
