Dear SupporTer of MuSiC eDuCaTion,
Thank you for your interest in and support for the VH1 Save The music Foundation. on behalf of the Board of
directors, our staff and the many thousands of students who have benefited from restored instrumental music
education, it is our pleasure to welcome you to our annual report.
This past year we have seen a renewed focus on how best to improve our public education system, during a time
when we are facing our toughest economic challenges in decades at national and local levels. We applaud and
support every effort to ensure that a quality education is available to all of our children. That is why the VH1 Save
The music Foundation was established – to ensure that every student has access to a complete education that
includes music. along with our partners, we have hosted events for and visited with Congressional members in
Washington, d.C. to ensure that they are aware of the crucial role that music plays in our children’s development
and education. We hear from schools, and especially the students themselves, that having music has helped them
improve in their other subjects and develop crucial skills. We, in fact, think of music as being a foundation upon
which all other learning can take place.
music study incorporates elements of math, literature, critical thinking, teamwork and self-discipline. music
students tend to be more engaged in school. yet so many schools are not given the resources they need to provide
this integral part of a comprehensive, quality education. if we shortchange our children today on their education,
it penalizes this generation and future generations. it also seriously impedes our progress as a nation.
as we look back over the past year, we want to commend the school boards, superintendents, principals, teachers, students,
our ambassadors and of course you – our supporters, who have shown your unyielding commitment to providing all
students with a complete education. This annual report is our shout-out to you! Thank you for your perseverance,
generosity and vision. Thank you for opening your hearts, minds and doors. We are inspired by your dedication,
challenged by your experience to reach ever higher, and encouraged by what we have achieved together so far.
let’s keep marching forward!
Sincerely,
ToM CalDerone paul CoTHran president, VH1 executive Director & Vice president Chairman, VH1 Save The Music foundation VH1 Save The Music foundation

A vast body of scientific research shows that children who study a musical instrument experience greater
success in all of their studies, exhibit better ability to work in teams, have enhanced creative and critical
thinking skills, and are more likely to stay in school and graduate from college.
american students must be prepared for an increasingly competitive global workplace; the ability to
think creatively is a crucial component in determining their success. in fact, a recent Conference Board report revealed that 74 percent of employers agree that creativity is increasingly important in u.S.
workplaces. in addition, teamwork and critical thinking ranked among the five most important skills
for new workforce entrants. yet more than half of these employers stated that entrants exhibited
deficiencies in these skills. ensuring that students have the opportunity to study a musical instrument
can help resolve this deficit. ironically, as other nations have looked to the united States education
system as a model, and are including arts education in their curricula, many american schools are
cutting these same programs. Without music programs in our public schools our children and our
country are weakened. For over a decade, the VH1 Save The music Foundation has worked to provide
resources to foster the skills needed for our children to succeed and maintain a competitive edge.

VH1 Save The music fundraises each year to
purchase and donate $30,000 of new, high-
quality instruments for each grant-recipient
school. a school can choose a package of
band or string instruments, a keyboard lab, a
guitar lab, or mariachi instruments. as part
of the Foundation’s community-based focus, the instruments
are purchased through local music retailers that are members
of namm, the international music Products association. namm
affiliates generously provide discounted rates to help further the
Foundation’s cause.
Since its establishment in 1997, the Foundation has provided more
than $47 million worth of new musical instruments to 1,750
public schools in more than 100 cities, affecting the lives of more
than 1.6 million children. The VH1 Save The music Foundation
is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring and sustaining
instrumental music education in america’s public schools and
raising awareness about the importance of music as a part of each
child’s complete education.

How THe VH1 SaVe THe MuSiC founDaTion workSThe VH1 Save The music Foundation develops long-term sustainable
instrumental music programs that provide children with equal access to
music education, regardless of their economic disadvantage. Through
strategic partnerships with school districts, the Foundation provides
brand-new musical instruments to public elementary and middle schools,
jumpstarting dormant music programs across the country. The school
districts commit to funding certified music teachers’ salaries, providing
maintenance and supplies, and scheduling instrumental music classes
during the school day. The Foundation maintains a partnership with the
district until instrumental music programs are in place in every school.

loCal efforTS
to make a difference in the life of a single child, the VH1 Save The music Foundation works at the
local, state and national level. This requires energetic advocacy strategies: working with community,
government and school-district decision makers from the outset of a project, then seeing it through to
completion.
advocacy efforts are only truly effective if the result of the work is sustainable. The local efforts of the
VH1 Save The music Foundation focus on ensuring that comprehensive music education is available for all
children for the long term.
The process begins with research; Foundation staff members find not only the school districts that do
not have instrumental music available, but also the districts where school administrators are ready to
support new music programs. during an initial meeting, school administrators outline their needs
and learn about the successes of districts with similar financial circumstances. The Foundation then
offers to grant approximately $30,000 worth of new instruments to qualifying schools that do not
have an instrumental music program; in turn, the district must commit to providing certified music
teachers and scheduling music classes during the school day. Together, the Foundation and the
school administrators develop a multi-year plan to restore instrumental music to every school in
the district.

CoMMuniTy foCuS Because community members are far more
likely to feel invested in programs that they
have helped to build, the Foundation seeks a
broad range of local involvement. instruments
are ordered from a local music retailer to
begin the new program and the school district
hires a certified music teacher to instruct
the program. Sponsors, local community
organizations, government representatives,
and school-district officials attend celebratory
events, often launched in partnership with
area businesses and arts organizations. local
foundations, corporate sponsors and partners,
and individual donors offer financial support,
the local cable system airs public-service
announcements about the importance of
music education, and the press follows the
program closely, detailing its progress and
effects on the community. This multipronged
outreach creates sustainable programs.
naTional efforTS The conversations that take place while advocating in local communities prove most
effective when decision makers, community members, stakeholders and funders
are already familiar with the importance of music education. For this reason, the
VH1 Save The music Foundation employs a number of strategies on a national
scale to lay the groundwork for successful local advocacy.
CongreSSional reCepTion aT THe uniTeD STaTeS CapiTol on may 12th, 2010 Congress members and their staffers joined the VH1 Save The
music Foundation and partners doSomething.org and namm, the international
music Products association, for a reception celebrating music education at the u.S.
Capitol. Taylor dayne, Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain, and VH1 President and
Foundation Chairman Tom Calderone spoke to attendees about the importance
of music education for all children. attendees viewed screens featuring anecdotes
from teens involved in the doSomething.org/VH1 Save The music Battle of the Bands.
CapiTol Hill ViSiTS VH1 Save The music Foundation executive director Paul Cothran testified before
the u.S. department of education on January 20, 2010 about the benefits of music
education and the challenges school districts are facing. in addition, VH1 Save The
music held a series of meetings in June with Congressional leaders to talk about the
importance of music in a child's education, and to advocate for education laws that
ensure that all children have access to a complete education.

SCHool leaDerS The Foundation selects school leader conferences to promote awareness for the vital need for
music education. each year, school administrators gather to share information that will enable
them to make important decisions about the curriculum in their schools. Both the american
association of School administrators (aaSa) and the national School Boards association (nSBa)
have granted the Foundation and other music-education advocates a section of their convention
spaces to be used as special pavilions, devoted to spreading the word about music education.
Since 2005, the VH1 Save The music Foundation has been joined by instrument manufacturers,
retailers, and the Supportmusic.com coalition in the music pavilions.
HonorS in addition to providing workshops on the
benefits of music education at the aaSa
and nSBa conferences, the Foundation
honors those school district officials
who have been supportive of music
education. in 2010, dr. eugene G. White,
Superintendent of indianapolis Public
Schools, was named the recipient of the
fifth annual administrator award for
distinguished Support of music education.
White was chosen for his emphasis on
ensuring that music education is part of the
core curriculum in all 64 indianapolis Public
Schools. The award, sponsored by the VH1
Save The music Foundation, is presented
each year to one superintendent or school
Ceo who has exhibited outstanding
commitment to restoring music education
in his or her school district. Past recipients
include: duncan n. P. “Pat” Pritchett Jr.,
past superintendent of the indianapolis
Public Schools; dr. John lange, past
superintendent of adams County School
district 14 (Colorado); dr. Carol Johnson,
past superintendent of the memphis City
Schools and current superintendent of the
Boston Public Schools; and richard kaplan,
superintendent of new Brunswick Public
Schools (new Jersey).
aDVoCaCy ToolkiTThe Foundation has developed a toolkit
for community members, teachers and
administrators who need resources for
local arts education advocacy efforts.
The advocacy Toolkit, a one-stop-shop
for music advocates to build their
case in supporting music education, is
available on the Foundation’s website,

in reaching its financial goals. The Foundation responded by reducing expenses as much as possible, but it
was necessary to use cash reserves to maintain operations and programmatic activities. The Foundation is
committed to strengthening its programs and rebuilding its reserves as quickly as possible.
in fiscal years 2008 and 2009, the VH1 Save The music Foundation’s financial activity demonstrates the
Foundation’s commitment to restoring instrumental music programs in u.S. public schools, as well as
the importance of our many funding partners.
