The Early Years Collaborative Ambition

To make Scotland the best place in the world to grow

up in by improving outcomes, and reducing inequalities,

for all babies, children, mothers, fathers and families

across Scotland to ensure that all children have the best

start in life and are ready to succeed.

Stirling and Clackmannanshire

Key Update: Alignment of EYC and RAfA Quality Improvement Programmes:

Work is ongoing nationally to bring together the Early Years Collaborative and the Raising Attainment for All programme under a Children and Young Peoples Improvement Collaborative. This will ensure that Quality Improvement is present throughout a child’s journey.

The local ambition is to follow in the same direction, looking at how we ensure that the Improvement Methodology is embedded in all services working with children and families pre-conception to 18 years.

Bannockburn Primary School

The group first visited Bannockburn Primary School to see how the nursery and school are using the Improvement Methodology to improve outcomes for children and families. They also had the opportunity to hear about several improvement projects in the school and nursery, including increased flexibility in nursery provision, engaging children and parents in reading, developing children’s resilience and self-esteem and utilising Therapets to boost children’s engagement and confidence in reading.

Bannockburn Primary School and Hillview Children and Family Centre welcomed some international visitors recently, as part of a series of site visits to Community Planning Partnerships (CPPs) by the Scottish Government and IHI (Institute for Healthcare Improvement, USA). The IHI is working with the Scottish Government on the development of the Children and Young Peoples Improvement Collaborative - an alignment of the Early Years Collaborative and Raising Attainment for All programmes. Visitors included Susan Hannah, Head of Improvement Programmes for the Early Years Collaborative & Raising Attainment for All, Scottish Government; Niñon Lewis, MS, Executive Director, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) USA and Julie Wild, Improvement Advisor, National Partners.

Comments: Lindsey Howland, Depute Head teacher at Bannockburn Primary said: “We at Bannockburn have a clear understanding of the philosophy of Quality Improvement methodology and are highly committed to using this approach to improve the outcomes for all our children and families. We were delighted to showcase our work to our visitors and it affirmed that small changes in practice and methodology can make a significant impact.”

Yvonne Lindsay, Senior Early Years Educator at Hillview Children and Family Centre, said: “It was great to have these international visitors come and see some of the improvement work going on in our nursery. We have truly embraced the Early Years Collaborative methodology in our everyday practice and have learnt on our journey to ‘always start small’. It has given educators the opportunity to increase their skills in quality improvement, therefore improving outcomes for our children, our families and our community.”

Education Convenor, Alistair Berrill said: “There are some absolutely novel and fascinating initiatives taking place in this vital area, and I look forward with great interest to see how they succeed.”

Hillview Children and Family Centre

The visitors then moved on to Hillview Children and Family Centre, to hear about how the nursery is using Driver Diagrams in their improvement planning to develop bundles of family support interventions. The group also learned more about their attendance project, improving the nursery environment and THRIVE – a collaborative partnership project developed with NHS Keep Well, Family Support Workers and Adult Learning, which aims to engage mothers who may feel isolated in the local community by increasing their confidence, knowledge and skills.

For more information on any of the projects mentioned above please get in touch with the EYC Programme Manager
