Internet What is a “browser?”
A browser is a program used to navigate the World Wide Web. Aka “web browser”

What is a URL? Universal (or Uniform) Resource Locator It is the address of a web page, It is a reference to a resource that
specifies the location of the resource on a computer network
It is also a synonym for IP address It usually starts with
http:// or WWW
Scrolling enables the user to scan information quickly. Two ways to scroll:
Use the “scroll wheel” on the mouse. Use the “sidebar” on the side of the
application or browser.
How to Conduct a Search 1. Open a browser (Internet Explorer,
Firefox, Chrome) 2. locate the “search” box 3. key (type) in the question or Web site
you are looking for 4. Scroll the list of “hits” until you find
one that you think has the information you need.
5. Repeat 1-4 if necessary
Practice: Locate Firefox on the task bar of your computer. Open Firefox by clicking on it
An hour glass will appear if the browser is slow to open, otherwise it will open immediately.
Notice the white rectangle in the middle of the Firefox home page. This is your search box.
Type in Georgia Department of Education Go down the list until you locate “Georgia
DOE Portal.” Click on the DOE link.
How to set Bookmarks/Favorites When you are at a website you want to save
for future reference, you can “bookmark” it. Click on Georgia DOE Portal Now you are at the Web site. Locate the Star at the top left of the Web page
next to the URL and search space That is the bookmark tool. Click on it. Click on the clipboard next to the star to see
pages you have bookmarked and bookmark options.
Pocket options “Pocket” enables the user to save
information. This information is available on any
device on which you are signed in to Firefox Smart Phone Tablet Laptop
Practice creating bookmarks. Search for “free educational sites.” Scroll the list of “hits” until you find a
“link” to a site that you want to visit. Click on the link that will take you to the
site. Click on the star to bookmark the site. At any time, you can click on the
clipboard and see a list of all the sites you have bookmarked.

Lab Rules & Routines Best way to establish order:
Leave the classroom orderly Walk down the hall orderly Maintain order when entering lab Teach students lab routines Follow routines to the letter Line up in “computer lab order”
Practical Lab Practices Have students turn off their monitors
when you’re giving directions. Allow students to help each other but
not touch another student’s computer. Assign each student a computer. Line students up in computer lab order
when going to the lab. Sanitize keyboards after each class.
Login Routines Provide index card with log-in information
and student password. Use the same log-in and password on as
many school-based programs as possible. Student should always have the card in the
lab. Teach students not to share this information. Students will quickly memorize the
information.
When a student needs help Continuously walk around the room
assisting and monitoring students. Assist students as quickly as possible so
that they learn that you will help them ASAP.
Don’t use this time for personal or school computer use,
Devise a nonverbal cue for students to notify you that they need help.
