Major Tasks The Information Strategy and Management section is improving the organisation’s use of data and information. We pick up on themes such as data literacy, transitioning to a digital world, and how to effectively manage and get value from the ever-increasing amount of data and information that we generate. Position Overview

Role of the Workplace

We are offering a unique opportunity to a intern who is innovative, future focused and willing to be an agent for change! You will help the Department align with new whole-of-government expectations for data and information management and modernise how we do our work and interact with businesses and citizens.

Major Tasks

The Information Strategy and Management section is improving the organisation’s use of data and information. We pick up on themes such as data literacy, transitioning to a digital world, and how to effectively manage and get value from the ever-increasing amount of data and information that we generate. You will assist our teams in developing the cultural change mechanisms vital for the success of our work. This will include:

Helping to develop awareness campaigns, including input into project planning.

Developing communication tools that establish a new cultural norm.

Shaping organisation wide engagement oppotunties such as seminars and floor walking discussions.

Sharpening essential APS skills through providing the secretariat functions for our Data Group.

Participating in whole of government and interdepartmental committee opportunities.

Major Project for Placement

One of the key roles of our team is to update departmental policies and strategies relating to information and data management. An update to the Data Breach Response Plan is expected to be completed in November 2019. We are seeking an intern to help create an awareness campaign for internal use. Tasks assigned to the intern include:

Writing a project plan under supervision that maintains relationships with other key projects.

Developing any associated communication tools in line with corporate branding.

Gain an understanding of how to develop internal communications through exposure to associated frameworks and guideline documentation.

Gain an understanding of the policy framework.

You will also be providing secretariat support for the Data Group – the Department’s data users and policy shapers community of proactice. Through this work, you will:

Learn how to use the Department’s room booking system.

Gain an indepth understanding of how to use Microsoft Outlook – a commonly used diary tool for Government.

Hone your messaging skills by developing communiques that continue the message that “data is an asset”.

Context of Project/Tasks

A data breach is the intentional or unintentional release of secure or private/confidential information to an untrusted environment. When a breach occurs, it is important for staff to understand how to respond, and minimise ongoing risks. The Data Breach Response Plan spells out steps to identify the process to respond to the breach.

Activities you may be involved in:

Reports (internal/external)

Speaking notes/speeches

Note/minute taking

Provide secretariat role including preparing and coordinating papers for meetings

Second last or final year of a relevant undergraduate or postgraduate degree
