Switched On Science

On the 14th of August, eLabtronics came down to Elizabeth South Primary School where a total of 12 primary schools attended our work-shop. Every school picked or were assigned a different project which was going to be entered at a competition and judged by notable profes-sionals in their line of work. At this workshop the mentors of eLabtronics taught and men-tored students the basics of programming to provide the knowledge such that they could work on their projects. All the students were taught how to use eLabtronics ezSystem soft-ware as it is designed to be user friendly and easy to follow.

Such projects included an alarm for a fridge, an emergency call for a trapped farmer, water sani-tary, health awareness and other real life applica-tions. The students were all very enthusiastic, imaginative and eager to learn about program-ming, science and how to apply what they were learning to real life situations. In the end, the projects underwent early judging to announce the current winners and also provide feedback on the projects. This allowed the schools to come up with more ideas to further improve their projects on their own. The projects would then be re-judged at the Royal Adelaide Show to announce the official winners.

engage and understand what can be achieved through STEMSEL club. The eighth edition science expo not only occupied all of the Goyder Pavilion at the Adelaide Showground but was also ex-tended to the Duncan Gallery. By exhibiting to the people the wide range of scientific disciplines as well as relating it to the school curriculum; the pioneer engineers of the newly found STEMSEL Foundation were given the opportunity to present as well as engage by displaying magic from the STEMSEL controllers. The event was aimed at drawing more students to join the STEMSEL club.

Reaching Out to South Australia STEMSEL Club not only run workshops within the city of Adelaide, but also reach out to various schools in South Australia. The purpose of this was to promote the awareness of Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) that aims to ensure strong relationship and enhance respect with the Aboriginal community.

On the 15th of August, STEM-SEL club partnered with Engi-neers Without Border (EWB) on an excursion trip by visiting Glos-sop High School at Berri, River-land to run a one-day workshop as part of the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) scheme. The young motivated students learned basic programming skills using the STEMSEL kits to implement LED control. By expanding on their knowledge built during the workshop, the class was divided into groups where each group were given a project to complete.

The projects involved exploring the creativity of each student allowing teamwork skills to be developed by making aboriginal paintings which include embedded LEDs to be displayed at the Royal Adelaide Show.

One of the exciting events STEM-SEL club hosted during the Royal Adelaide Show was the remote controlled soccer robot competi-tion. This involved guiding the soccer robots on the floor and try-ing to push as many balls into the goals. Additionally another task was given which involved having the robot move through a terrain before pushing the soccer ballsi nto the goals. Competition was judged by how many goals were scored as well as the time. The competition this year saw over 100 competitors.

3D‐Printing This year in partnership with the Australian Science and Mathematics School and Physical Prints; STEM-SEL club exhibited the vast growing technology of 3D-Printers. Demonstrations were shown on how plastic models were built as well as the difficulty and level the 3D-Printers can reach.
