UNIT 14 - EXTEND YOUR THINKING

THEME – ANIMALS

Symmetry

Symmetry means dividing an image into two halves to form two mirror images.

Symmetric Figures

Figures that can be divided into two equal halves are called symmetric figures .

Some of the alphabets also exhibit symmetry.

Eg :

Line of symmetry

The line that divides an object into two similar halves is called the line of

symmetry .

Some objects can have more than one line of symmetry.

Eg : A square has 4 lines of symmetry.

5-fold symmetry is

found in starfish

and sea urchins .

Only very primitive

creatures like

sponges lack

symmetry .

7

Exercise

CW

I . Draw the line of symmetry for the following figures :

II . Draw the other half to complete the image :

HW

III .Draw a circle . Identify the number of ways by which a circle can be divided

into 2 equal halves .

Note :

* Symmetry has plenty of applications in everyday life as in art , architecture ,

textile technology, rangoli designs etc.

8

Patterns

Numbers , objects or geometrical designs that follow a specific order form

patterns.

Types of patterns

Regular pattern

Increasing pattern

Decreasing pattern

Rotating pattern

Increasing and repeating pattern

Decreasing and repeating pattern

Number pattern

A giraffe’s spots

form irregular

patterns .

Some prey animals like

zebras are marked with

high contrast patterns

which help to confuse

their predators .

Intricate patterns

of rings and dots

mark the coat of

jaguar.
