ONTENTPREFACE

Our Std. V Mathematics Workbook comes replete with a quick recap of Concepts, Summative Questions, Oral Tests and Formative Questions. The goal of this book is to provide practice to students and to help them understand the concepts better. Every Chapter consists of Let’s Understand section at the beginning of the Exercise that gives the readers an overview of the theory. The Summative Assessment section includes Questions based on the Practice sets of each chapter. The Formative Assessment part of the chapters includes Activity Based Questions along with Project Work. Each chapter comes with an exclusive section called Oral Test, which has been prepared to develop the competency skills and enhance mental calculations within a student. All the chapters have been covered extensively through the medium of practice questions and activities. Chapter 1: Roman Numerals

1. Roman Numerals

Summative Assessment

1. Symbols used for writing Roman numerals:

Symbol used as Roman numeral I V X

Numeric value represented by it 1 5 10 Note: (1) There is no symbol for zero in Roman numerals. (2) The value of a symbol used for Roman numeral does not change with its place. 2. Rules for writing Roman numerals from 1 to 20:

Sr. No. Rule/Note Examples

(1)

Rule 1: The number formed by writing the symbols I or X consecutively two or three times is the sum of the values of the individual symbols.

(1) II = 1 + 1 = 2 (2) III = 1 + 1 + 1 = 3 (3) XX = 10 + 10 = 20

(2)

Rule 2: The consecutive repetition of symbols I and X is allowed for a maximum of three times in a number. However, the symbol V is never repeated.

(1) III = 3, however IIII 4

(2) XXX = 30, however XXXX 40

(3) VV 10 and VVV 15

(3) Rule 3: When I or V is written on the right side of the symbol of a bigger number, add its value to the bigger number.

(1) VI = 5 + 1 = 6 (2) XII = 10 + 2 = 12 (3) XVI = 10 + 5 + 1 = 16

(4) Rule 4: When I is written on the left of V or X, subtract one from the value of V or X.

(1) IV = 5 1 = 4

(2) IX = 10 1 = 9

(5) Note 1: The symbol I cannot be used more than three times, after a bigger number.

(1) 14 is not written as XIIII. Instead it is written as XIV.

(2) 19 is not written as XVIIII. Instead it is written as XIX.

(6) Note 2: The symbol I cannot be written more than once before V or X.

(1) 3 is not written as IIV. Instead it is written as III.

(2) 8 is not written as IIX. Instead it is written as VIII.

(7)

Note 3: To write any number from 1 to 20 in Roman numeral, it is first distributed into groups of 10, 5 and 1. Then any four of the above rules are applied to it.

(1) 8 = 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = VIII (2) 12 = 10 + 1 + 1 = XII (3) 16 = 10 + 5 + 1 = XVI (4) 18 = 10 + 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = XVIII (5) 19 = 10 + 10 – 1 = XIX (6) 20 = 10 + 10 = XX

2. The decimal system of writing numbers:

Roman numerals are difficult to read and write. They also make calculations difficult.

The system of reading and writing numbers using the ten digits 0 to 9 is known as the ‘decimalsystem’. In the decimal system, the value of a digit depends upon its place in the number.

The decimal system of writing numbers was invented by mathematicians of ancient India. It waslater accepted in all parts of the world because it was simple and convenient.
