MARCH 2019

Greetings Booker Nation,

Spring Break is an opportune time to rest and relax as we prepare for testing season. A great deal of progress has occurred thus far and we are excited about what is to come. As we work together, I know that we will continue to accomplish a great deal more. I want you to know how much we enjoy working with your scholar. It gives me great joy knowing that we are working together to strengthen programs and opportunities for all students. With the help and encouragement of citizens like you, our scholars will continue achieve at high levels. They will continue to grow and prosper along with the staff at Booker Middle School. I have the highest regard for the dedication, diverse talents and skills of our staff and the effects they have on our scholars. I am impressed daily with the caring ways of our BMS family.

Permit me to take this opportunity to express my personal appreciation for the efforts you have made over the months to support your scholar’s academic success. We have demonstrated once again that our scholars are learning well and they are becoming notable assessment capable learners. Our collaborative effort devoted to high expectations for all, should make for an overall outstanding year.

Thank you being a committed stakeholder and for believing in what we are doing to Inspire Tomorrow’s Leaders. Booker Middle School stands out in this sphere, as in so many others.

I look forward to the remainder of the school year and the exciting opportunities it will bring. Sincerely,

Dr. LaShawn Frost, Principal

College and Career Center Spotlight Most students (and staff) look forward to Spring Break in

March. Naturally, Spring Break showcases our Career

Cluster of the Month: Marketing, Sales and Services!

Booker Scholars can begin developing their skills for these

career paths in our Career Technical Education courses

such as Digital Information Technology or Graphic

Design.

Our scholars were joined by Attorneys Kelly Roberts and Pamela Hernandez of Berlin, Patten and Ebling

for a Career Chat Luncheon about Financial Law. Special thanks to PGT Innovations for allowing our

students to explore future careers at their manufacturing facilities. Next month, Ringling College of Art

and Design invites some of our scholars on an all-inclusive tour. If you and your student are interested in

more College, Career and Life Readiness information, please stop by our College and Career Center during

your next visit to campus!

3/14 Means… Pi Day (π)

Here’s a pi poem from Abby Metzler:

3 rounds in times tables of my math problem

1 to the addition table I see in my mind

4 to the subtract table I see subtracting my time

5 to the division table I do division on my problem

9 in front of the decimal stopping the other numbers

2 to as the sum to my questions and problem

6 has the nearest number I round my day to the nearest tenth

5 of the square root I find in the cube.

Booker Middle and SWAT “Kicks Butts” This month Coach Skogen lead a kickball game as a fundraiser for

the American Heart Association to send home a message for

National Kick Butts day! The students had a wonderful time.

Thank you to all participants and teachers and especially to our

SWAT club members (Students Working Against Tobacco) who

are so deeply committed to their cause.

Dragonfly Café Art Ovation Residency

The Dragonfly Café was our at Art Ovation Hotel downtown for their

second residency this year, and it is no surprise that they were again a

big hit. They were there typing poems on the spot and interacting with

guests. Ms. Fox and her students put in 21 hours through the week and

did a fabulous job representing our school!

Dragonfly Goes To Tuttle

The students of Tuttle Elementary school were treated to a visit from

Dragonfly Café teacher Ms. Fox. The students were engaged in a special creative writing lesson and had a wonderful time! Students

were able to interact with words as they would if/when they attend Booker Middle School’s Creative Writing class as part of their VPA program. Who knows? We may see some of these students next year!

It was a powerful sight to see our students so engaged.

The Asolo Presents Crucible This month, students were treated to a wonderful performance

of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible at the Asolo Reparatory Theatre. They watch the wonderful and moving performance and then got to participate in a talk back afterwards with

several of the performers including BMS 8th grader Annika Trout. It was a wonderful experience for our students and we

are so proud of Annika’s stellar performance!

Former Student Comes to Visit Former student Ruth Palacios came to visit students and talk about her experience with duel enrollment at Booker High and STC. She is

in the veterinarian program and even brought a guinea pig with her that she allowed students to pet!!

Thinking Maps Did you know that Booker Middle School is a Thinking Maps

School? Thinking Maps are consistent visual patterns linked directly

to eight specific thought processes. While using Thinking Maps, students use visual patterns to work collaboratively for deeper comprehension in all content areas and grade levels. This school year

all our teachers are being trained on the different maps and have started to use them in their classrooms. Don’t be surprised to hear

your student talking about double-bubble maps, tree maps, flow maps, and more!
