Dear family of St. Thomas Aquinas, “Ephphatha!”, that is, “be opened”. Jesus uses this word in Aramaic as he opens the ears and mouth of the deaf and mute person brought to him for healing. Before this, the poor man was unable to communicate due to his disability. He was most likely living a life in isolation due to this. Everyday life may have been a source of great frustration for this man. As Jesus opens his ears and mouth, Jesus is not only restoring his sensory organs but with that one word, Jesus is in a sense giving this man new life. While most of us may have our sensory organs in order with regards to hearing and speaking, what about our hearts? Are we sensitive enough to hear the cry of those struggling and in need around us? Are we open to listening to the truth of the Gospel and the will of God in our lives? Do we have the courage to stand up for the truth? Are we courageous enough to defend the teachings of the Church regar-ding faith and morals even if it is unpopular? Let us ask the Lord to heal us of any deafness, muteness or cowardice that may exist in our hearts. During the Rite of Baptism, the priest or deacon says this exact word “Ephphatha!”, encouraging the newly baptized to receive the Word of God and proclaim the faith. May we live out our baptismal calling everyday with faith and courage. Your Servant in Christ, Fr.

Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs to the kingdom? ~ Santiago 2:5

You are not alone.

In today’s Gospel we hear how Jesus “makes the deaf hear and the mute speak!” In living the gospel, we must open our ears to hear and recognize all the everyday opportunities for

making God’s presence known especially to those who are

poor and suffering. On September 9, the Church also celebrates the feast of Blessed Frederic Ozanam, the founder of the Society

of St. Vincent de Paul. Frederic heard the call of Jesus to love and serve those who are suffering.

Please join us on Monday, September 20 at 6 pm in the Social Hall to learn more about the work of the society.

"Thanks to the generosity of the

families of St Thomas Aquinas school, we were able to raise enough money to

install a new sacrarium and

give our working sacristy a facelift".

What is a sacrarium? A sacrarium is “special sink used for the reverent

disposal of sacred substances. This sink has a cover, a basin, and a special pipe and drain that empty directly into the earth, rather than into the sewer system” (USCCB, Built of Living Stones, 236).

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love

You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at

this moment receive Your sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my

heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to

You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
