Now who backed into whom Ken?Greg Zintak worked qute a bit of overtime this summer. He commented the other day that now he has enough money to buy his wife those $10 dollar fl ip fl ops she’s been wanting. Shoot, maybe he will buy her two pair...lol. My friends are the kind that if my house was on fi re they would be out cooking somemores and fl irting with the fi remen!92 degrees and the Chief has a jacket on ...hmmmm.If you can’t fi x it with a hammer - you have an electrical problem. Apologies to Zak Prielipp. It’s two pp’s not two ff’s in his last name. The kids around Colleen during the Fall Festival Parade loved it when the fl oat came by and the guys bombed her with footballs.Chuck Schoonover said he never wins the daily drawing tickets at the Fall Festival until after he leaves and gives them to someone else. So I suggested he give them to me while he was still there. Sure enough they called his number. We split the goodies!I am nobody, and nobody is perfect; therfore I am perfect.

Fall Burning SeasonBurning season is coming upon us rapidly. There have been some changes in the local burning ordinances. We all need to rid ourselves of lawn waste and accumulated brush from this summer season, but we also need to be safe and follow the rules established by the local jurisdictions. Burning ordinances are as follows:

Village of Roscoe - allows burning sunrise to sunset (365/yr)

Village of Machesney Park Nov. 1 – Nov. 30

Winnebago County (unincorporated areas) Oct 15th- Nov 15th (Sat & Sun only)

When burning:

Have the fi re in a pit or protected area such as a plowed or barren area where the ground is turned up 360 degrees circumference. This will lessen the opportunity of unintentional spread. The fi re must be attended at all times and a method of suppression, such as rakes, shovel, and/or garden hose, must be present and within reach. These fi res should never be started with any type of accelerants. Build the fi re small and add to the pile as it burns; this will keep the fi re in check and controllable. All items to be burned must be vegetation in nature and grown on the property where burning is taking place. Remember! The local police enforce these ordinances and fi ne violators; the fi re department is only called to extinguish any unattended or uncontrolled fi res when required.

If you have a question on the laws about burning , please call the non-emergency number to the Winnebago County 911 Center at 815-282 2600. That is also the number you should use to report any non-emergency problems, such as dogs barking, non violent events, burning complaints etc.

Water Rescue/RecoveryBy Chief Don ShoevlinPhotos by Sheryl Drost

Harlem-Roscoe units responded to a pond off Chicory Ridge Way for a possible drowning on September 1. After an exhaustive rescue and recovery operation, the body of a 17-year-old was recovered from the pond.

This incident tried our physical endurance, and our emotions as well. We as a department never quit. Through teamwork, we pooled resources and ideas to mitigate it as quickly as possible. We continued to work with multiple public and private agencies and utilized the many resources.

We as a department have trained diligently in water rescue and a call of this diffi culty tests us all. All personnel involved from all agencies performed their duties in the utmost professional way. I am very proud of our fi refi ghters for their tireless efforts and commitment. All of our chief offi cers did an excellent job as well. Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to the family and friends.Thank you to Belvidere Fire, Blackhawk Fire, Kirkland Fire, Loves Park Fire, New Milford Fire, North Park Fire, Rockford Fire, Rockton Fire, Shirland Fire, South Beloit Fire, Lifeline Helicopter, IL/WI K9 Search and Rescue, Rock River Reclamation, Rockford Blacktop, Roscoe Police Offi cers, Village of Roscoe Trustees, and Village of Roscoe Public Works.

Firefi ghters continue dragging operations the next morning.

Trucks with trailers lined the side of the pond where the boats were unloaded.

Several boats hook together to begin dragging operations.

Dragging operations continued into the night-time hours.

Firefi ghters are given their directions for the dragging operations

Five search and rescue dogs were brought in and utilized. Above, a bloodhound named Josie Wales was taken out in one of Harlem-Roscoe’s boats.

A large net between two boats was also used during the search.

Village of Roscoe Trustees brought in 4 large pumps to pump out the water in the lake, but fi refi ghters recovered the body before the lake was drained.

Left, Chief Shoevlin and DC Kirk Wilson set up Incident Command. Right, one of several divers surfaces during the rescue operations.

From the Chief’s DeskBy Fire Chief Don Shoevlin

Well, school is back in session, and the 2008 Fall Festival has come and gone. It was a great weekend, not only with the amount of visitors to the booth, but weather as well. I hope you were able to obtain some information about us and see that the fi refi ghters are there when you need them. It appears that the parade grows every year, as do the spectators along the

route. Thank you to everyone for your absolute great support and appreciation shown to us as we marched.

Requests for our services continues to grow. We are averaging about eight calls per day. Our fi refi ghters are doing a wonderful job of meeting those requests. We need to remember that we are a volunteer department with a group of individuals dedicated to be the very best. The dedication goes far beyond just call response. There is department training as well as specialized training. As we enter the fall season we also begin to see many classes start up again. I am happy and proud to say I do not think there is another volunteer fi re department in our area that commits to the level of training that we do.

The commitment of our individuals says that they believe that they can make a difference in the community when called upon. I stated at the beginning of the year that I am committed to excellence, integrity and caring: I believe all the personnel of our fi re department are committed as well.

Please check out our website www.harlemroscefi re.com to keep up with the progress of the department and individuals. As always, don’t hesitate to contact me or stop by if I can be of any assistance. Don’t forget to come to the Association’s haunted hayride. It is guaranteed to be a frightful experience.

Harlem-Roscoe Firefi ghters helped out again this year during the Mud Volleyball Tournament for Epilepsy in Roscoe. The department’s two 3,000 gallon tenders trucked in thousands of gallons of water to keep the showers operating during the day long event. Firefi ghters had also helped water the courts the days before to get them muddy.

Congratulations to Harlem-Roscoe Firefi ghters Tom and Amber Aaker on the birth of their fi rst child. Piper Alison Aaker arrived September 10 weighing in at 8lbs. 14oz. Mom and baby are doing great and dad is handling his share of diaper duty just fi ne!

Beside both parents being fi refi ghters/EMTs on Harlem-Roscoe, Piper has a couple more family members on the department. Grandpa Captain Mike Drost, Grandma Photographer Sheryl Drost, uncle Jim Daughenbaugh, and cousin Neil Roe.

Congratulations again, Tom and Amber, she is soooo adorable!

Congratulations to Harlem-Roscoe Firefi ghters Chris & April Scott on the birth of their new baby girl. Makenzie Kay Scott arrived September 8 weighing in at 6lbs. 2oz. and 19 1/2” long.

Chris says mom and baby are doing great. He also says his older children, Ty (8) and Paige (4) are having fun doting on their new baby sister. Makenzie’s grandpa Mike Scott is also a retired Harlem-Roscoe Fire Deputy Chief.

Congratulations again, Chris and April. She is soooo precious!
