Definition of Prevention• Focuses on preventing the onset of substance use, abuse,

and addiction

• Addresses substance-related problems up to, but not including, assessment and treatment for abuse and dependence

• Is a proactive, multifaceted, multi-community sector process

• Is a planned sequence of activities applying evidence-based principles and practices

Goals of Prevention

1. Defer the onset of alcohol and tobacco use.

2. Increase abstinence from alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs.

3. Eliminate high-risk use of alcohol and other legal drugs.

4. Address environmental factors to decrease alcohol, tobacco and other drug use.

• Why advocate?– Good for our community– Well being for future generations– The more you advocate, the more you are recognized.– And who knows, you may have gained your royal position for a time

Lobbying vs. Advocacy

• Lobbying: activities that ask legislators to take a specific position on a specific piece of legislation, or urge others to do the same (IRS definition for nonprofits).

• Advocacy: any activity that a person or organization undertakes to influence policy - includes educating, providing information, arguing a cause.

• (Most work happens before a bill is introduced)
