States of Matter

All things are made up of matter.The three basic states of matter are:

A solid is a state of matter that has its own shape and size. A toy boat is a solid. If you toss it into a pool, it will keep its size an shape.

A liquid is a state of matter that does not have its own shape. Water is a liquid. Liquids flow and take the shape of its container.

Notice how the ice and lemon displaces the water and the water takes shape around them?

A gas is a state of matter that spreads out to fill a space. It has no shape of its own. A gas always fills a closed container and comes out when you open the container.

Balloons hold gas.

Pool toys hold gas.

Measuring Matter

All matter takes up space. The amount of space that matter takes up can be measured. You can measure the length, width, and height of a solid object with a ruler.You can measure the amount of space that a liquid takes up, or volume, with a measuring cup.

Measuring Matter

Mass is the amount of matter in an object. All matter has mass.You can measure the mass of an object with a balance. The object sits on one side of the balance and then you add mass units until the sides are even.
