What is a GIS?What is a GIS?• A method to

visualize, manipulate, analyze, and display your data

• “Smart Maps” linking a database to the map

• Allows integration of existing data to support decision making

How does it integrate? How does it integrate?• Three areas of homeland security:

1. Detect and Prevent• Emergency Management Planning

– Hazard and Risk Assessment– Evacuation Route Planning– Resource Deployment Planning

• Asset Inventory– Locating Critical Infrastructure

2. Protect and Defend• Situation Analysis• Demographic Studies• Plume Analysis• Staging Analysis

3. Respond and Recover• Search and Rescue• Location Based Intelligence• Vehicle Dispatch and Tracking• Damage Assessment
