WelcomeWelcome to the 2012 State of Leadership Conference! We are glad that you have

chosen to participate in this two-day look at Sustainable Leadership. As a leader of your community, you have a tremendous opportunity to generate change. It is our goal to

provide an environment which inspires, educates, and creates networking opportunities for those who want to make a difference.

This year, we have gathered various speakers and community leaders to share their insights on sustaining leadership and to provide meaningful educational experiences. We

encourage you to interact with all the attendees of this conference in order to explore and learn effective strategies for creating sustainable change. Positive change starts with

an active mind and a willingness to learn. We hope that this conference will help you achieve both and will create a lasting desire to impact your community.

3:45-4:30 p.m. Opening Session - BLUU Auditorium Join conference attendees for an interactive session led by our LeaderShape students. Participants will also hear from Jeff Ferrell, a TCU professor of Sociology. Jeff will share his dumpster diving experiences and the way he incorporates sustainability into his daily life.

4:30-5:15 p.m. Sustainability in Practice - BLUU Auditorium Conference attendees will gather in teams to make sustainable centerpieces to use at the State of Leadership Institute Dinner and participate in a clothing swap. The centerpieces will be constructed only of previously used materials.

5:15-5:30 p.m. Break

5:30-6:30 p.m. State of Leadership Institute Reception - BLUU Ballroom Lobby Learn sustainability facts while mingling with community leaders from across the DFW area. Conference attendees can utilize this time to learn from seasoned leaders in the community.

6:30-8:00 p.m. State of Leadership Institute Dinner - BLUU Ballroom Hear from keynote speaker Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of TerraCycle. TerraCycle is a company dedicated to eliminating the idea of waste. In 2011, Szaky was named to the 2011 Forbes Impact List, which recognizes entrepreneurial pursuits that impact the world.

9:40-11:00 a.m. Panel Discussion with City Leaders - Dee J. Kelly Alumni Center Mayor Betsy Price, Councilmember Jungus Jordan, Assistant City Manager Fernando Costa, Budget Director Horatio Porter, and Mayor and Council Aid Keome Rowe will discuss the various factors impacting development, the needs vying for city resources, and the intersection of these elements that lead to city decisions.

2:30-3:15 p.m. Community Planning - BLUU Auditorium Join Fort Worth’s Comprehensive Planning Manager Eric Fladager to learn the nuts and bolts of planning communities and allocating resources.

3:15-4:45 p.m. Team Breakout Session - BLUU Breakout Rooms Attendees will have the opportunity to work in teams to develop a plan and put the concepts of a sustainable community into action.

Jeff Ferrell, Texas Christian University

Jeff Ferrell is currently a Professor of Sociology at Texas Christian University and Visiting Professor of Criminology at the University of Kent in the United Kingdom. He is the author of the books Crimes of Style, Tearing Down the Streets, Empire of Scrounge, and, with Keith Hayward and Jock Young, Cultural Criminology: An Invitation, winner of the 2009 Distinguished Book Award from the American Society of Criminology’s Division of International Criminology. He is also the co-editor of the books Cultural Criminology, Ethnography at the Edge, Making Trouble, Cultural Criminology Unleashed, and Cultural Criminology: Theories of Crime. Jeff is the founding and current editor of the New York University Press book series Alternative Criminology.

Betsy Price, City of Fort Worth

Mayor Betsy Price was elected mayor of Fort Worth June 18, 2011. A successful business owner for 17 years, Mayor Price began her career in public service as Tarrant County Tax Assessor in 2000 and quickly used her business experience to make her department one of the most efficient in Texas, saving taxpayers millions of dollars. Mayor Price has been active in the community all her life. She has been involved in Sunday school, the PTA, Camp Fire Girls, the Red Cross, and other professional organizations. Mayor Price graduated from the University of Texas in Arlington with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.

Tom Szaky, TerraCycle, Inc.

Tom Szaky, 29, is the Founder and CEO of TerraCycle, Inc., one of the world’s foremost leaders in eco-capitalism, recycling and upcycling. In 2006, Inc. Magazine named TerraCycle, “The Coolest Little Start-Up in America”! That same year Tom was named the “#1 CEO in America Under 30”. However, the rapid growth and success of TerraCycle is no surprise to those who have known Tom his whole life. TerraCycle had its breakthrough in 2004, selling its little-known fertilizer to The Home Depot and Walmart - two of the world’s biggest retailers. Today, after doubling in size for four straight years, TerraCycle occupies a 20,000 sq. ft. factory in Trenton, NJ, where it employs over 20 workers in its labor force and is a second chance employer as part of its pledge to being socially beneficial.

Fernando Costa, City of Fort WorthFernando Costa is an Assistant City Manager for the City of Fort Worth. He oversees the City’s infrastructure services departments, which include aviation, housing and economic development, planning and development, transportation and public works, and water. He also chairs the management committee for Vision North Texas, a public/private partnership that received the American Planning Association’s 2011 award for innovation in sustainable development. Before joining the City Manager’s Office four years ago, Costa worked as a city planner for 32 years, including ten years as planning director for Fort Worth and eleven years as planning director for Atlanta. He received Master of City Planning, Master of Science in Civil Engineering, and Bachelor of Civil Engineering degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Eric Fladager, City of Fort WorthEric Fladager is the Comprehensive Planning Manager for the City of Fort Worth. Fladager has been in the position since 2006. He is responsible for long-range planning, including the City’s Comprehensive Plan, specific area plans, and functional plans. He received degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Jungus Jordan, City of Fort WorthJungus Jordan was first elected to the Fort Worth City Council in June of 2005. Councilmember Jordan is the representative for District 6, which includes the far south and southwest portions of Fort Worth. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas Christian University and a Master in Management from Webster University. Additionally, he completed Cornell University’s Management Executive Program. Mr. Jordan has received numerous awards for his work in the Fort Worth community as well as his distinguished career in the United States Air Force. He is currently the chair of the Regional Transportation Council and represents Fort Worth on the Texas Municipal League Board of Directors, the North Central Texas Clean Air Steering Committee, and is the Secretary/Treasurer of the Tarrant Regional Transportation Coalition. In 2007 and 2008, Mr. Jordan was Chair of Rail North Texas.

Horatio Porter, City of Fort WorthHoratio Porter is the Budget Officer for the City of Fort Worth. He was hired in 2009 and has helped guide the city through several difficult budgets. Porter graduated from Texas Christian University in 1992 with his undergraduate degree in Accounting and in 1994 with a Master of Business Administration.

Keome Rowe, City of Fort WorthKeome Rowe serves as an aide to Mayor Betsy Price. He assists with the mayor’s young leaders, education, faith-based, and energy initiatives. Rowe is a former TCU Chancellor Scholar and a 2011 TCU graduate from Texas Christian University.

Mr. Saji AlummuttilSaji Alummuttil has been in the architecture, urban planning and construction industry for the past 20 years. His experience includes construction management for a State of California prison and a Drug Enforcement Administration drug laboratories project. More recently, he was the project manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ part of the $909 million Trinity River Vision project in Fort Worth. Saji graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Architecture, and he has a master’s degree in Real Estate Development. He is a registered architect.

Mr. Robert Beardsley, Jr.Mr. Beardsley currently serves as a Vice President Business Banking Relationship Manager in the Commercial Lending Group at Omni American Bank. Prior to his work with Omni American Bank, Mr. Beardsley was a Vice President for Comerica Bank from August 2008 to July 2011. Mr. Beardsley is very active in the community. He serves on the Fort Worth Stake High Council for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He serves on the Board of Directors for United Community Centers. He is the Finance Committee Chairman of the Silver Star District for Boy Scouts of America, and he teaches financial literacy through the United Community Centers and Jr. Finance to junior high students. Additionally, Mr. Beardsley teaches the “FDIC Money Smart” Financial Literacy program at the Fort Worth Business Assistance Center and helped partner with TCU professor Dawn Elliott and her Economics Development Policy class teaching Financial Literacy at the Union Gospel Mission.

The Honorable Bob BolenBob Bolen started his career as an entrepreneur in Fort Worth. He owned and operated Bolen’s Toy Palace, Bolen’s Bike World, and, ultimately, twenty-eight Hallmark Stores throughout Texas. Mr. Bolen served as Mayor of Fort Worth from 1982-1991 and was instrumental in helping to recreate the downtown Fort Worth area, assisted in the Alliance Texas development, and the international Sister Cities program. He has also served on numerous boards such as DFW Airport, Texas Municipal League, United States Conference of Mayors and National League of Cities. At the invitation of the TCU Chancellor and Board of Trustees, Bob currently serves as the Senior Advisor to the Chancellor.

Ms. Celina BoscoCelina Bosco is a native of Santiago, Chile, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Strategic Communications and a Master of Business Administration. While in Chile, Ms. Bosco worked as a Key Account Manager and Senior Editor at

Extend Communications, Product Manager for Falabella Holding, and Marketing and Brand Manager at Business News America. Upon moving to Fort Worth in 2007, she entered the Schieffer School of Journalism at TCU, graduating with a Master of Science in Advertising/Public Relations in 2008. During her time at TCU, she assisted with the Model United Nations program and several Student Affairs initiatives, in addition to serving as a graduate assistant in the Schieffer School. Ms. Bosco currently is an international marketing coordinator at CashAmerica.

Dr. Wayne CarsonWayne Carson has over twenty years of experience working with children and families in a variety of roles. He currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of ACH Child and Family Services, a provider of 15 different programs for children and families in five counties. ACH exists to help children experience a childhood that is safe from abuse and neglect and which offers hope for the future. Populations served include runaway and homeless youth, abused and neglected youth, families struggling with managing children’s behavior problems, human trafficking, and children experiencing trauma. Dr. Carson holds a bachelors degree in civil engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla, and masters and doctorate degrees in social work from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Mr. Chris FaberMr. Faber’s career includes 30 years of diverse experience including Strategic Planning, Engineering, Financial Systems Development, Regulatory Management and Sales and Marketing in the telecommunications and software industries. Mr. Faber is currently the Vice President of Enterprise Markets for Spacenet, Inc., based in McLean, Virginia. Prior to joining Spacenet, Mr. Faber was Global Marketing Director for SITA, a communications company based in Geneva, Switzerland, where he was responsible for worldwide marketing efforts for the travel agent and online travel reservation services markets. Mr. Faber holds an MBA in Finance from Eastern Michigan University and a BA in Communications from Michigan State University.

Mr. Rick FarrRick has been a member of the JCPenney management team for 36 years and is currently the Director of Labor Relations. His career includes 21 years of HR experiences and 15 years of Operations Management experiences. He has an extensive background in labor relations, associate relations, union avoidance, union campaigns, strategic planning and implementation, change management, leadership development, performance management, coaching, mentoring, communications, organizational

development, safety, and risk management. His education includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a minor in English and Economics from Marquette University. He earned his MBA from Rockhurst University. His professional affiliations include SHRM and Dallas HR.

Ms. Michele GagneMichele Gagne is a Project Manager at RadioShack Corporation where she develops, plans and manages the implementation of initiatives for complex projects with broad scope, high impact and long implementation time frames. She is particularly effective in leading teams of diverse people, focusing them on a task and ensuring the end objectives are understood and achieved. Prior to her current job, Michele was the Sr. Director of Information Technology at Mercury Retail Services in Grand Prairie where she oversaw applications, infrastructure and projects that enable the business. Michele earned a BBA in Management Information Systems from the University of Iowa in 1986 and an MBA from Texas Christian University in 2003. She currently serves in a leadership role on the Neeley Alumni Executive Board.

Ms. Patricia HardyPatricia “Pat” Hardy, a lifelong educator, has served on the State Board of Education since 2002. During her tenure on the board, Hardy has served on all three of the board’s committees. She presently serves chair of the Permanent School Fund, the approximately 25 billion dollar fund that provides the funds for resource materials for public schools. Hardy is also employed part-time as an instructional strategist for the Weatherford Independent School District. Previously, she taught high school world history and world geography for 30 years at Castleberry High School in Fort Worth before becoming the Social Studies Coordinator for Weatherford Independent School District.

Mr. Joshua HernandezJoshua Hernandez is from Victoria, Texas, and received his undergraduate degree in Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Joshua was distinguished with both the Rick Reilly Scholarship for Journalism in Sports and the Barrie Hartman Scholarship for Journalism in News-Editorial. He furthered his reporting skills as an intern for the Boulder Daily Camera Newspaper. Joshua graduated with Honors in 2005 and began a position as Public Relations Coordinator for Ironman North America Triathlon. He currently works with SMI Lending, Inc. in downtown Fort Worth. He also lives in Fort Worth with his twin brother, Justin, where the two co-founded and currently operate Impossible Possibilities.

Mr. Justin HernandezJustin Hernandez is from Victoria, Texas and has a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from Texas State University in San Marcos.

He also earned his MBA at TCU’s Neeley School of Business in May 2009. Upon graduation, Justin accepted a position as a financial analyst for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in Fort Worth and completed their Financial Leadership Development Program (FLDP). He graduated from the FLDP in 2010 and worked in the Business Pursuits organization, where he led strategic, operational and financial business cases for the executive leadership team of Aeronautics. Justin currently works for Quicksilver Resources as a strategic business analyst in downtown Fort Worth. Justin currently lives in Fort Worth with his twin brother, Joshua, where the two co-founded and operate Impossible Possibilities.

Mr. Bret IrvinBret Irvin, assistant vice president, Human Resources, has worked in Human Resources at BNSF Railway for 18 years. Currently, Bret has responsibility for corporate staffing and serves in a generalist capacity supporting Marketing, Finance, Corporate Audit Services and Human Resources. During his career, he has held numerous positions of progressive leadership responsibility in corporate and field assignments. Prior to his current role, Bret was director, Human Resources, for the Marketing department and director, Human Resources, for the Operations department. Bret received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from the University of Texas in Arlington.

Ms. Nina JacksonNina Jackson directs Adolescent Pregnancy Services for the Fort Worth Independent School District. Mrs. Jackson’s work involves the development of short and long range goals for the District concerning school-age pregnancy and parenthood, the coordination of services provided by the school district, and collaborations with community agencies, parents, and the religious community. She directly supervises the Project Reach Program which is an in-school case management program for this population. Mrs. Jackson earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Education and her Master of Science degree in Counseling from American Technological University.

Ms. Kelly KeenumKelly Keenum currently is employed as a Marketing Specialist for Cook Children’s Health Care System. In this role, she is responsible for developing and implementing marketing and communication strategies for each of the six Cook Children’s Health Care System companies. Prior to Cook Children’s, she served as the Public Relations Manager for Pier 1 Imports. Ms. Keenum also worked for the American Heart Association starting as a Communications Director in 2006 and ending as a Regional Vice President of Communications and Marketing in 2008. Ms. Keenum received a Bachelor of Science in Business-Marketing from Trinity University in 2001. She is an avid tennis player and is the volunteer marketing director for TCU’s Men’s Tennis Team.

Ms. Kathy LivingstonKathy Livingston is a TCU Master of Business Administration graduate. Ms. Livingston is currently serving as Interim Executive Director with Courage and Renewal – North Texas, a non-profit organization that provides retreats and programs for personal and professional renewal for people in demanding professions, such as education, non-profits, health care, ministry, and community leadership. People passionate about their work need ways to reflect, renew, and re-energize themselves for the long haul. Kathy has extensive background in municipal government and community collaborations, particularly those benefiting children and youth. She serves on TCU’s Community Engagement and Outreach Advisory Board.

Mr. Norm LyonsNorman Lyons is currently the Executive Vice President of Sales for Lyons Benefit Solutions, Inc. For the previous sixteen years, he was the Vice President for Community Development for the Texas Rangers Baseball Club where he developed community programs to increase the fan base and assisted historically underutilized women and minority-owned businesses in doing business with the Texas Rangers Baseball Club. Norman is on numerous boards including Medical Center of Arlington, Boy Scouts, Pro Players Foundation, United Way of Tarrant County and many more. Norm is the Democratic Candidate for County Commissioner, Precinct 3 which is Northeast Tarrant County.

Ms. Maliada Mason MillerMalinda Mason Miller, President, EmCubed, has a wealth of experience in public relations, marketing and the social media space. Miller works with nonprofit and socially-conscious for-profit organizations that want to make a tangible impact in their communities. With 15 years of experience at national nonprofits such as the American Heart Association, and local nonprofits, such as Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, Miller has taken what she has learned to generate awareness and results for even more nonprofits across North Texas. Her hands-on nonprofit experience, and genuine appreciation for generous, socially-responsible North Texas corporations, make her a unique “virtual staff member” for forward-thinking organizations that make an impact on our community each and every day. Together, Miller and her clients achieve creative results, increased donations, improved brand awareness, and true community impact.

Dr. Don MillsDon Mills was appointed as Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership in the summer of 2011. Prior to that, he served TCU in various administrative capacities for over forty years. From 1993 to 2011 he served as Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and also served as Director of Housing, Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Student Center.

He graduated from Harvard University, Brite Divinity School and completed his doctoral studies at the University of North Texas. He is a graduate of the Harvard University Institute for Educational Management. Don has been a consultant to the U.S. Department of Education and served on the staff of the Richard Stevens Institute. Don is recipient of the “Pillar of the Profession” Award, the highest recognition of the NASPA Foundation. He is also the recipient of the North American Interfraternity Conference Silver Medal and the Interfraternal Award of Excellence. Dr. Mills is active in the Fort Worth community serving on many local boards and recently conclude a term as President of Leadership Ft Worth.

Dr. Natalie MurrayDr. Natalie Murray practices gastroenterology, transplant hepatology and internal medicine at Baylor All Saints Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Dr. Murray has been practicing medicine for 26 years and specializes in transplant surgery. She attended the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.

Ms. Rosa NavejarRosa Navejar started her banking career in 1976 at First of Fort Worth (which is now Bank of America). She worked in the banking industry for 25 years. This experience gave her a vast knowledge from operations, retail, consumer and commercial lending to investments. In 2001, Ms. Navejar left banking to become the first Hispanic female to lead the Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Since then, the Chamber has worked to develop programs with the purpose of educating ‘Start-up to Existing’ businesses. The FWHCC uses its members to educate and promote awareness in business plans, access to capital, certification, permits and zoning, marketing, financials and contracts.Dr. Dan NovakDr. Novak spent 31 years at IBM in a broad range of leadership, sales, and international roles. He holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership, an MBA from the University of Dallas, a BBA from the University of North Texas, and a Six Sigma Green Belt certification with a specialization in healthcare. Dr. Novak has published book chapters and articles on the organization-customer interface, organizational design, leading virtual teams, servant leadership, and on leading in distributive, collaborative, networked, and highly-matrixed environments. Dr. Novak has served as Adjunct Professor at TCU where he taught an MBA course in innovation and workshops in TCU’s Executive Education program. He also serves as Assistant Professor of Leadership at South University, an executive coach, and a consultant in leadership and organizational strategy.

Mr. Steven PhillipsMr. Phillips graduated with an undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan, and received his MBA from Texas Christian University. Currently, Mr. Phillips serves as a Director and Assistant Treasurer at Cash America International. In this role he works with the Treasurer as a senior member of the finance team to help structure debt, execute foreign exchange hedging, oversee cash management and bank relationships and streamline the corporate insurance program. He has also worked for Jacobs Engineering, Belo Corp, Valor Telecommunications, and AmeriCredit Corp. He is also on the Board of Directors for The Learning Center of North Texas, a nonprofit organization providing comprehensive diagnostic educational evaluations.

Mr. Keome RoweKeome Rowe serves as an aide to Mayor Betsy Price. He assists with the mayor’s young leaders, education, faith-based, and energy initiatives. Rowe is a former TCU Chancellor Scholar and a 2011 TCU graduate from Texas Christian University.

The Honorable Wayne SalvantWayne Salvant began his legal career as an investigating attorney with the United States Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) in Fort Worth, Texas. After 3 years with the Commission, he decided to embark on a career in private law practice. Judge Salvant was appointed to the bench in Tarrant County’s Criminal District Court No. 2 in 1995. He was elected in 1996 and re-elected in 2000, 2004 and 2008. Judge Salvant obtained his Juris Doctorate from The Southern University Law Center. In addition to his elected duties Judge Salvant has served as presiding Judge of the Drug Rehabilitation Court (D.I.R.E.C.T.). This thirteen month program offers non-violent drug offenders a treatment regimen as an alternative to imprisonment.

Ms. Christi StinsonChristi Stinson has more than twenty years’ experience in association and nonprofit management. She has been the Chief Operating Officer of the Texas Society of CPAs and for the past three years she was Executive Director of the Funding Information Center. Christi now has a private CPA consulting practice focused on nonprofits and associations. She is a Certified Public Account (CPA), a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) and a Certified Association Executive (CAE) with a Nonprofit Management Certificate from the Center for Nonprofit Management and Brookhaven College in Dallas. She is a graduate of Baylor University and is an active member of the Rotary Club and various association management and CPA organizations.

Mr. Estrus TuckerEstrus Tucker is an independent consultant, writer and keynote speaker specializing in group facilitation, designing and leading conversations and retreats across the country in support of personal, professional and community renewal, conflict transformation, healing and reconciliation and creative civic engagement. Estrus has over 30 years in Non Profit Executive & Board Leadership and is an alumnus of the University of Texas at Arlington, Leadership Fort Worth and the John Ben Shepherd Texas Public Leadership Forum. His mission is to inspire courage and life affirming values that promote community, nonviolence and justice, in service of a world that works for all.

Mr. Peyton TunePeyton Tune is the Executive Director of the Eastside YMCA in Fort Worth. The YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth is a 120 year old non-profit social enterprise focused on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Peyton has worked in the YMCA Movement for 10 years and has served as the co-advisor to the TCU Student YMCA for four years. Peyton’s other areas of emphasis are child and adolescent development, community outreach, volunteer development and fund raising. He is a lifelong Texan, native to Tarrant County and a graduate of Baylor University.

Mr. Dennis WeeseDennis J. Weese joined the Cash America team in September 2007 to serve as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Retail Services and oversee Cash America’s store-front pawn operations and lending services. In July 2008, he was promoted to President and Chief Operating Officer for the retail division. Prior to joining the company, Dennis held various leadership positions with PepsiCo, Limited and most recently, Brinker International. Dennis is also a member of the Executive Council for the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl.
