As a South Hills student, you will complete a practical, hands-on 12-week internship or 6-month internship for DMS students before graduation. You’ll work alongside seasoned professionals in the career field of your choice.

Every business needs an accountant. The Business Administration — Accounting program is designed to provide you with the knowledge required for success in today’s multifaceted business world. The BAA program combines accounting, information technology, and general business courses, which provide you with the foundation to enter the world of business. Emphasis is placed on financial accounting, cost accounting, tax accounting, auditing, payroll, and computerized accounting.

Technology ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY (ET)Associate in Specialized Technology (AST)

The Engineering Technology program prepares students for engineering careers through the study and practice of three disciplines – Architectural, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering. This comprehensive program incorporates drafting, solid modeling, Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) programming along with team building, mathematics, and problem-solving skills.

In the ET program, you will learn to apply engineering principles and use commonly-used software programs to develop innovative solutions. You will become proficient in CAD, accurately measure using a variety of precision measuring instruments in the mechanical and civil fields, and much more. Our ET students learn to excel at both independent and team-oriented projects.

The Information Technology program can prepare you for one of today’s most promising professional fields.

Our IT students learn software and hardware inside and out. Within our comprehensive curriculum, students may choose Technical Electives that offer the flexibility to customize their class choices based on their professional interests. South Hills IT courses are very hands-on and project-based, giving you the opportunity to build the skills you need to enter this career path.

Our IT students hone their skills in website development, mobile app development, networking, security, database administration, systems administration, programming, and troubleshooting. Students also learn about project management, content management systems, and technical presentation skills.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRAMMING (SDP) Associate in Specialized Technology (AST)

The Software Development and Programming program provides an environment for students to develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies to succeed in the programming and software development fields. Students receive training and practical hands-on experience developing applications for desktop and mobile operating systems, creating databases, and building websites using commonly-used platforms.

The field of software development and programming continues to evolve as new technologies emerge, increasing the demand for skilled software developers.

HealthcareHEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (HIT) Associate in Specialized Technology (AST)

The Health Information Technology program trains students in ICD-10 and CPT coding, EHR (electronic health records), healthcare quality improvement, reimbursement systems, and more. Students hone the technical skills needed to manage and analyze information for both patients and the facilities where they receive care. You’ll find career opportunities at hospitals, physician offices, nursing homes, government agencies, and other healthcare facilities. The HIT program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM)*. Upon successful completion of the HIT program, graduates are eligible to apply and sit for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) examination.

MEDICAL ASSISTANT (MA) Associate in Specialized Business (ASB)

The Medical Assistant program trains you to use both administrative and clinical skills in a medical setting. Students learn to perform tasks such as records management and billing as well as clinical procedures ranging from collecting specimens to administering medication (as state law permits). The Medical Assistant program is accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)*. Upon successful completion of the Medical Assistant program, graduates are eligible to apply to take the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) examination through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

ADMINISTRATIVE MEDICAL ASSISTANT (AMA)Associate in Specialized Business (ASB)

The Administrative Medical Assistant program provides you with the administrative, computer, and communications skills you’ll need for a medical office career. Administrative medical assistants are key players in making sure medical records are accurate and that medical offices run smoothly. They are responsible for patient communications, appointment scheduling, medical coding and billing, filing insurance claims, and maintaining records.

CAAHEP Accredited Program Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program

The CAAHEP accredited* Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at South Hills’ State College Campus can prepare you for a career working closely with radiologists, cardiologists, and other medical professionals. You will learn to use high-tech equipment utilizing ultrasound to assess human body.

Example Career Opportunities include: Sonographer, Ultrasound, Technician, Echocardiographer, Vascular, Sonographer, Cardiac Sonographer, Vascular Technician

Students may choose between three specializations:

• General Sonography (OB/GYN, Abdominal)

• Cardiac Sonography (echocardiography/heart)

DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY PROFESSIONAL PLUS (DPP)2-year Diploma Program

(Applicants with prior degree)

This two-year (6 terms) diploma program is designed for applicants who already have a previous Bachelor’s degree in a field other than medical imaging. It includes coursework in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, patient care, and medical imaging sciences.

DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY PROFESSIONAL (DMP)19-month Diploma Program

(Applicants with imaging background, Radiologic Technology/RT certification)

This 1.5-year (5 terms) diploma program is designed for applicants who already have a previous 2-year or 4-year degree in a medical imaging specialty such as radiologic technology or nuclear medicine technology. It requires a strong background in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, patient care, and medical imaging sciences.

DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY (DMS) 3-Year Associate in Specialized Technology

Degree Program

(Applicants with little to no post-secondary education)

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) Program is a three-year program in which graduates earn an associate’s degree in specialized technology. This program is for those individuals that either do not have any post-secondary education or those that have earned minimal college credits.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE (CJ) Associate in Specialized Business (ASB)

The Criminal Justice Program can prepare you for a variety of career options—from law enforcement to investigation to corrections to victim advocacy.

This program combines theory and practice to provide students with an understanding of the criminal justice system and the socio-economic factors that impact the field. You will learn investigative techniques, basic security skills and the criminal legal process and procedures for the PA court system, as well as the basics of criminal and family law. Students also receive training to earn OCAT (pepper spray) and PATH (Practical and Tactical Handcuffing) certificates.

Graphic ArtsGRAPHIC ARTS (GA) Associate in Specialized Technology (AST)

The Graphic Arts program prepares the creative individual for a visual communications career – through print, web, interactive and social media, illustration, and more.

You’ll begin designing from day one. Using commonly-used software, the GA program will train you in typography, web design, corporate branding, packaging, publication design, advertising design, and more. At the end of the program, you will graduate with a versatile, well-rounded print portfolio and website, ready to launch your career in the field of Graphic Arts.
