To: Robert O’Donnell From: Ed Poprik RE: High School Update Date: July 24, 2017 In addition to reviewing the construction progress report from Massaro Construction Management, this update includes 2 specific items for discussion: -Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment (FFE) update
-High School Signage
Furniture, Fixtures and Equipment (FFE) update: The FFE planning effort for this project has been actively underway for nearly a year. The FFE budget, which has been approved as part of the soft costs at $2.6 million, will fund the purchase of new items, which are not part of the building construction. These items include, but are not limited to: -Furniture -Appliances -Select instructional equipment Crabtree Rohrbaugh and Associates (CRA) has been working with administration to prepare for purchases, while balancing cost estimates against the available budget. Concurrently, district-owned materials are being evaluated for re-use in the finished building. In preparation for the December completion of Phase 1, the first round of furniture purchases will need to be approved in August. An additional round of purchasing is planned for 2019. In order to protect the integrity of the approved budget total and lock in pricing now, an accounting of all potential

purchases for both phases is being compiled. As part of the initial award, the selected vendor(s) will guarantee pricing for the purchases and deliveries scheduled for 2019. The Board action slated for August will be to approve the current purchases for Phase 1 and establish a not to exceed cost for the remainder of the Phase 2 purchases. A primary focus of Phase 1 purchases will be for areas that are not currently in existence in the current building. Examples include: flexible furniture for the large group, small group, and gathering areas. In order to obtain the best balance of quality and price for the furniture portion of the purchases, quotes from 3 vendors who hold state contract pricing were obtained. Awards will be made to the low vendor(s). A completed accounting of the items and quotes will be presented at the time of the award. For the appliances and equipment portion of the purchases, some pieces may be purchased outright, while a formal bid may be forth coming for certain pieces of equipment. Based on current pricing, if all furniture planned were purchased as new, the budget would be exceeded. In addition to looking for savings opportunities where appropriate, and select use of existing furniture, some furniture may be planned as a future purchase outside of the project budget. Several renderings and a sample floor plan are attached. Signage: Site signage, wayfinding, was not included as part of the bid package for this project. Therefore, administration is beginning the review and planning process for routine site signage, wayfinding signage, and main entry signage. CRA, who have completed wayfinding signage for numerous High School and campus projects, has offered to provide their services without additional charge. It is anticipated that in the coming months, CRA will work with administration to develop a draft plan. When complete, this plan will be reviewed with the Board at a future Facilities and Grounds Committee meeting.

Regarding the main entry signage, due to the campus nature of our project, several potential locations exist. The obvious choices would include the main entry drive to the South building, the main entry drive to the North building, and the intersection of O’Bryan Lane and Westerly Parkway. A review of all possible options will be completed with the final selection checked against the State College Borough sign ordinance. If necessary, variances will be requested. During discussions about potential main entry signs, the local stone mason, Mr. Phil Hawk was raised as a potential resource. Examples of Mr. Hawk’s work, which includes signs for Penn State University and College Township, can be found at www.PhilHawk.com. A preliminary, non-binding, meeting has been held with Mr. Hawk and he is enthusiastic about the potential project. As part of the discussion, the potential of reclaiming stone from a wall in an existing wing of the North auditorium was also discussed. Mr. Hawk is interested in pursuing this possibility for a number of reasons including but not limited to: -Sustainability -Quality of the Stone -Source of “free” materials -Integration of the old High School with the new High School Administration is seeking permission to engage in a limited time and materials contract with Mr. Hawk to engage in a site sign planning process. As with the other signage, draft plans would be reviewed with the Board prior to execution. Following a successful design process, another contract could be sought for the actual construction. Due to the status of furniture purchase estimates, funding for this portion of the project would be from contingency and supplemented by a commitment from the HS PTO. As part of this process, administration plans to present a credit change order on August 14 to eliminate a 6-foot fence from the project. The design team included the fence as a way to prevent pedestrian traffic from using the parking lot as a short cut. However; this fence, if installed, would be in a prime location for main entry signage. If this area is not chosen as a final sign location, administration believes a better pedestrian traffic flow solution is warranted. (see red line on attached site plan)
