Richard Dyer mentions that a star is a “constructed” image and does not represent the real person or people.

So as part of the media course we had to create stars to reach out to a specific chosen target audience.

Our band now named “Picasso’s enemies” is an organic band. The band members met at Uni where they shared the same flat. They decided to create a band and started practicing in the basement of their Uni building where they were told to leave due to the noise. Not having anywhere to practice they started playing at gigs where they were spotted by XL recordings and were signed. They are young band and are well known for their fun loving nature and giving all of their energy at gigs. They have a quirky style and their music is Indie/Pop.

Paradox

• Richard Dyer refers to the two paradoxes of star images. The paradox “The artist is both ordinary and extraordinary”.”

• Our band is ordinary in that they have normal emotions (Such as the pulling of faces) and the admiration of the artist. The target audience feels a connection with their band and they therefore feel closer to the band.

• This is where the second Paradox comes in where “The band are both present but absent.” The audience feel closer to the band and feel an emotional connection towards them however they cannot reach out and touch them meaning they need to constantly consume more media products to fill the gap they feel between them and the band.

Target Audience

Our intended target audience for Picasso’s Enemies would be a male or female and in their late teens. They would be into Indie Style bands and would have a sense of sophistication, knowing about different Art forms, as our video is all about Art.

They would be artistic and quirky, enjoying something different. They would listen to radio channels like Radio 1 and attend regular Gigs. Music would have to be a big part of their lifestyle. Our target audience may walk around places like Camden and shop in quirky small vintage shops that offer a unique style.

Organic

Picasso’s Enemies are an organic band. This quality of their image is created through our Music Video by the performance aspect.

In the video the band are seen playing their own instruments which shows they are talented and do not rely on musicians to create the music.

Their back story also suggests an organic band where they have built themselves up and were already a created band that the record company signed. They create their own music also.

This would be a selling point to their target audience as they would like the fact that the band are creating and playing their own music, rather than someone else doing it.

-a naturalistic approach to artists, who have been nurtured by the record company. The artist is given time to evolve and progress through their career.

Sexual Magnetism

Our Band consists of four males, each of them having something different about them to reach out to as many different females as possible. To reach out to the female audience a section of our video includes the band topless, being painted.

We also have sneak peaks of the bands upper halves just to tease the female audience and encourage them to watch the music video more.

We also reach out to the male target audience by including a girl in our video. The Artist, presented with red lipstick, blonde hair and a nice outfit reach out to the male audience who may be attracted to her and want to watch the music video again just to see the artist.

The CD cover however does not concentrate on the sexual magnetism of the band. It concentrates more on the bands faces and only in the video are they presented as desirable males.

YouthfulnessYouthfulnessOur band are shown throughout the video to be youthful. During the video they constantly pull faces which suggests a level of playfulness in the band. This would reach out to the target audience as it would show they are able to have fun. Their ability to have fun and pull faces also helps the audience connect with the band and feel like them. The band suddenly become real o the audience and this element in the music video shows that they are human and do have emotions too.

The pulling of the faces is also seen on the CD cover in the inside design and the poster for Picasso’s Enemies.

This also gives each band member a different personality and audiences can connect with the different band members in different ways. This alone provides an open polysemic experience for the reader as they read the facial expressions in different ways.

Originality• Our band star image has an element of originality.

The band suggest a level of sophistication due to their theme of Pop Art. The Pop Art design, presenting the band as an Andy Warhol style Pop Art painting is not an idea I have ever seen in a Music Video. The band also come to life in these paintings that have been created by the artist that is shown in the video. This idea is also visually stunning and the viewer would enjoy this concept and would want to watch the video again.

• They have also created this song themselves and the record company have decided to release this as their first single within the album.

• The originality of the band and indeed the Pop art/ Paint idea would be pleasing to their target audience of possibly art lovers and they would want to buy the album as on the front of the album it also shows paint splashes to encourage the audience to recognise the video and make them buy the album.

Success Against the Odds• The back story of the band is something that would reach out to

their target audience. The fact that they did not have such a good upbringing, with little money to buy their guitars and drums and no where to practice once they were asked to leave their basement where they lived. They were however spotted, and signed by XL recordings. This success story would be used to encourage target audiences to buy their albums to help them succeed. This also shows to the audiences that they are human, and have problems just like normal people do.

• This success story is hinted at in our music video as the artist is creating the band. This suggests they are a group of artists creating themselves to become successful. The artist figure mirrors that of the band creating themselves.

Page 10: Star Image - Maria

• All of these elements draw the audience towards the band and encourages them to buy the bands album and continue watching the music videos.

• The CD cover, poster and music video all combine together to create the star image that we intended to reach out to a specific, chosen target audience.

• Our combination of products is a very effective advertising campaign. This is due to the coherence of each of our products like the CD cover, Music Video and Poster design. If each of these products were presented by themselves it would be very clear to an audience what band we are trying to promote as each of our designs include the same themes and styles such as the paint and the colours.
