W ell, I can’t quite believe wehave reached the end of yetanother term here at Eden

Boys’. Spring term has been short butsweet with many accomplishments andstories of success, which we are delightedto share with you in this issue of STAR.

In January, we were honoured towelcome Mr Ernest Simon to our school.Mr Simon, who is a survivor of TheHolocaust, answered many questionsfrom our boys about his memories of thisincredibly bleak period of history. Wewere very proud to see our boyscommunicate in an incredibly mature andrespectful way and we look forward toseeing this behaviour continue as wedevelop on what we have learnt from MrSimon during related activities in school.

We’ve been lucky to welcome evenmore visitors to school this term! TheRoyal Navy who are currently workingwith the charity ‘Groundwork’ to deliverthe ‘Young Garden Project’ have beenvisiting us weekly, which you can readabout on page three!

Our boys have yet again done usproud with their sporting achievements! We are very proud of our boys’ sportingability and so their success rarely comesas a surprise to us, however the boys did

find themselves very surprised at oneevent when their opposing team, an allgirls’ team, stole the win. All together nowladies… who run the world?

Our students certainly have beengetting out and about during spring term!Turn to page 5 to read about a group ofyear 10 students who attended a PhysicsMaster class at Birmingham University. They were set with the task of creating athermostat which involved melting ironand soldering parts together. The boysthoroughly enjoyed getting involved andwe felt very lucky to be invited to takepart in the event.

Some other year 9 students also gotto go on a trip outside of school, althoughthis one was slightly further afield. EdenBoys’ went international! We were thrilledto be able to send a group of boys toSpain. They had an incredible timeexploring Seville, Granada and Cordobaand have made memories that I am surethey will cherish for a lifetime!

I am sure you will agree that it hasbeen a small but mighty term! Puttingthis issue of STAR together has been awonderful reminder of what a great termwe have had and I am very much lookingforward to the brighter, sunnier days ofSummer Term here at Eden Boys’.

T his term has involved weekly visits from the Royal Navy, who are working with the environmental charity‘Groundwork’ to deliver the ‘Young Garden Project’; a

project in which teams of pupils create garden designs for thelocal Handsworth Park.

“Eden Boys’ are brilliant! The boys are very engaging andthey know much about an array of subjects! They’ve all come upon the sofa to chat, and we all know that conversation starts onthe sofa” – Royal Navy Tactical Manager

The pupils from Handsworth Wood Girls’ are workingtogether with our pupils to create mood boards and flat plans. The garden design ideas will then be pitched to a judging panelconsisting of the Chair of ‘Friends of Handsworth Park’, arepresentative from the Royal Navy and the Head of GroundworkUK. The presentations will be judged on the clarity of the pitching,in addition to how well the ideas meet the brief that has beengiven to them.

“Key aspects of the brief involve creating a garden that,in addition to being visually appealing, reflects the diversity ofBirmingham; a garden that brings communities together; a gardenwhere people of all ages, genders and ethnicities can enjoyspending time.” – Groundwork UK

The winning designs will be put forward to the local council,in a bid to raise funding to put the plans into fruition. The winningteam will also receive £100 in vouchers!

Marking the arrival of spring, we are pleased to announcethat Eden Boys’ pupils have begun dedicating their time andefforts to lending a green hand to the local community.

A big congratulations to our pupils who managed to get throughto the Regional Finals of the Mosaic Enterprise Challenge. The preliminary stage involved an ethical business

questionnaire and a business simulation game – our pupils were ableto achieve a whopping virtual £5.6 million!

For the next stage of the competition our pupils need to pitcha business idea that will benefit the school, to a judging panel.

Our pupils have proposed a ‘Crusty Compost bin’ for schoolcanteens, so pupils can make good use of their unwanted bread crusts!

They have also proposed ‘Crusty birdhouses’ and a ‘Crustyflower and vegetable patch’ for our school garden – with appropriatelicensing Eden Boys’ pupils might be able to sell the flowers andvegetables to the local community. Good Luck Eden Boys’!

AMBITION

O n Wednesday 24th January, 14 of the school’s brightest year10 students accompanied Ms Trenchard and Mr Amin tothe University of Birmingham’s “Astronomy in the City,” to

attend a public lecture on Supernovae. In addition to hearing a post-doc discuss his cutting edge research on theoretical supernovae, theboys learnt about what happens to a star when it dies. We were treatedto an explanation of three very different types of telescopes, anddeveloped an understanding of how to navigate the night’s sky by starhopping. Our boys were a credit to the school, noted for their politenessand respectfulness by other attendees.

A few months ago, myself and 13 year 10 pupils were invitedto a master class in Birmingham university. We felt reallyprivileged to be chosen as this was an opportunity to develop

our knowledge on science and explore exiting topics. The day began with a compelling introduction into extreme

temperatures. We learnt eye opening facts like, the sun is 15,000,000 °C.On top of this we had direct contact with one of the coldest substancesin the world, liquid nitrogen. A few of the pupils were hesitant, fearingthat their fingers may fall off !

After learning about extreme temperatures and how they couldbe formed naturally, in the sun, and artificially, in science labs, wewere educated about its importance. Extreme temperatures causematerials to have different properties which can be beneficial inindustry. We visualised this physically in an experiment with a copper

rod. In normal temperature, when a magnet was dropped down therod, the magnet fell straight down. Interestingly, when the rod wascooled in the liquid nitrogen, the magnet levitated in the middle anddidn’t fall through. The copper rod forms a super conductor whichhas numerous useful properties.

Personally I found the second half of the master class moreenjoyable. We were given a task which was to create a thermostat witha kit we were given. What made it particularly exiting was that we hadto solder the parts together and melt iron to use as an adhesive. Therewas another school with us which filled the room with a competitivevibe as we wanted to finish first. Fortunately, Mohamed Shazed wasexperienced and finished thirty minutes early. The rest of us managedto finish not long after Mohamed, however none of the pupils fromthe other school finished. What a great day we had.

SERVICE

O ur students heard first-handabout the atrocities of theSecond World War when

Holocaust survivor Ernest Simon paidus a visit. 87 year old Austrian bornErnest Simon addressed the wholeschool at an assembly to launch thesecondary school’s Holocaust MemorialDay activities. Mr Simon shared hisstory about how he and his youngerbrother came to the UK in 1939 via theKindertransport to flee the Nazis whenErnest was aged eight. Soon after, hisparents followed on domestic permits, however the family lived apart for manyyears as Ernest was sent to live with afoster family at the start of the SecondWorld War. Unlike the stories of manyJews around the time of the Holocaust,

Ernest’s story has a happy ending as thefamily were reunited in Leeds in 1942.

Ernest, who now lives in London, shares his testimony to help youngpeople better understand the nature ofthe Holocaust and to explore its lessonsin more depth. The visit was arrangedthrough the Holocaust EducationalTrust (HET) as part of their OutreachProgramme, which is available toschools across the UK all year round.

Year 9 pupil MuhammadIbrahim commented, “It was a realhonour and privilege to meet MrSimon. Listening to his amazing storyreally made me appreciate thechallenges the Jewish people wentthrough during the Holocaust.”
