My tribute to Arnold is to be grateful for the time I shared with him and for the heart he put in Seniors, not only for the Newsletter, but for so many things throughout the years! I can’t talk about Arnold without mentioning Greta as they were one. Always putting a lot of their time, efforts and knowledge to support Seniors best interests. Visit to the Local Studies CentreOn Friday 11 May, Alan, Garry, Phyllis and Cathy, members of the new Local History Study Group went along to visit the Local Studies Centre in Lewisham Library.

On arrival we were first introduced to the reguations which protect the materials by Julie, the custodian. She then showed us the maps, street directories, census records, photographs and local newspapers on microfilm which would be of most interest to us. We studied early maps of Lewisham which showed that Northwood Road did not exist and then others which showed its development.

We exchanged memories of different areas as we examined the maps and photographs. Garry explored some family history. Julie told us that we could also contribute to the archives by compiling material for them about the Lodge and submitting it in a file labelled Stanstead Lodge.

On another visit we’ll be able to look at the journals of the Darby and Joan Club which held it meetings at the Lodge in the early days and. some members will probably have memories of coming to the club with their grandparents. There were several photographs of the old club showing what went on in that period. And the fashions!

Gwen invited Kathy from Carers Lewisham to come along on Monday 23 April at lunchtime to give us all a different experience. It was full of laughter.

We were greeted by a range of toys that laughed. That raised a chuckle from one and all. I think the black and white cat that rolled around the floor intrigued and tickled us most. That broke any ice on what was a sunny day.

Next we had to warm up to be able to laugh - from top to toe. Now that was an interesting idea. This was followed by movement and then a musical chair game. How many ways can you laugh was the next thing we learned. And in between, we learned why laughter was so good for us. And there we were - an hour gone in the laugh of a moment.

So if you see someone with a silly grin on their face or a guffaw escaping at an odd moment, you’d better ask them if they’ve been to a laughter workshop

We have funding to run a 5 day intergenerational workshop during the summer holidays this year. This will be lead by Judy Gordon who has a wide range of skills in running type of activity. We shall be working with Rockbourne Youth Club and the Young Mayor’s team.

You are invited to join in this activity as a change from the usual class you attend that is probably on its summer break. It is an opportunity to have a go at doing a bit of drama, straight, musical or comic for yourself with some different energy.

Some of us hardly ever get to talk to young people. Here is an excellent opportunity to learn some new skills in different company. Anyone who has seen the performances of Montage Theatre Group will have an idea of the sort of few days you could enjoy Contact Tina for details

Six intrepid members set off on our first ever freedom pass trip. We were off on a visit to Two Temple Place, a grand house near Temple Underground station near the Embankment.

What a surprise to see a somewhat grander version of Stanstead Lodge. Two Temple Place was built as an estate office for William Waldorf Astor, then the richest man in the world. This and much more we learnt as we were conducted on a tour around the building by Jenny, one of the volunteers with the Bulldog Trust who now run the building.

Tour completed, we had a light late lunch in the cafe before making our own way round the exhibition on when Jazz came to Britain, just a century ago

INTERGENERATIONAL DRAMA PROJECT

Judy Gordon will lead an intergenerational drama project during August. This has been funded by Perry Vale Ward Assembly. Children and young people will be offered the chance to join the project. It will run from 11 until 3 for 5 days. The children will be drawn from Young Lewisham Project, Rockbourne Youth Club and the Young Mayor’s Team.If you are interested in joining in this new venture, please let Tina or Cathy know. The more the merrier.!We’ll finalise the dates soon. Watch the notice boards for updates.

ST DUNSTAN’S FESTIVAL DRAMA PROJECT

Seniors members have been invited to join pupils from St Dunstan’s sixth form to create a drama in four days as part of their festival on 2 July. Three of us met some of the pupils recently to throw up some ideas around their interests. Gang and knife crime, the environment, and Brexit were suggested. Some amazing technological ideas emerged from their previous studies. .....And we added in Mack the Knife, Threepenny Opera, teddy boys, Rock Around the Clock, rationing and not wasting anything. That was an hour gone!

The pupils finish their A level exams in the middle of June and will be getting together to develop some ideas and talk to other departments about what can be added to the mix.

The project will be run by Amy Clark, who, with years of acting experience behind her, is joining the school. So this is an excellent opportunity for any aspiring thespian to have a go!First workshop is on Sunday 30 June from 2 pm at the Broadway Studio Theatre with the performance at 6 pm on Wednesday 3 July. There will be workshops on Monday 1 and Tuesday 2July. They will start at 9 am, but we’ve made clear that we don’t necessarily have the stamina for the hours that they can put in. So don’t be put off. You can join in!
