Students in grade six expand their understanding of history by studying the people and events that ushered in the dawn of the major Western and non-Western ancient civilizations. Geography is of special significance in the development of the human story. Continued emphasis is placed on the everyday lives, problems, and accomplishments of people, their role in developing social, economic, and political structures, as well as in establishing and spreading ideas that helped transform the world forever. Students develop higher levels of critical thinking by considering why civilizations developed where and when they did, why they became dominant, and why they declined. Students analyze the interactions among the various cultures, emphasizing their enduring contributions and the link, despite time, between the contemporary and ancient worlds.

Appendix To simplify this standards map and assist you in navigating the TCI subscriptions, we have provided links that will take you directly into our Teacher and Student views for each lesson of our History Alive! The Ancient World program (part of the History Alive! California Series). Some of the citations list multiple sections (i.e. 1-6 or 1, 3, 6, RF). The provided links will take you to the first section listed for each citation. Then, you can easily navigate, using the drop down menus, to the other sections within the program yourself. We have also listed which component of our program contains the content that meets each standard (Text, IT, ISN, or Lesson Guide). For the Student view, while various components live on the same webpage within the subscription, you may need to scroll down to find the exact component cited for each standard. For example, if we list “ISN”, click on the link to navigate to the right section of the lesson and then scroll down to the “ISN” (or “Interactive Student Notebook”) area. The following components all live on the same webpage (when relevant) for each section of a lesson in the Student view: Text, IT (Interactive Tutorial), and ISN (Interactive Student Notebook). For any citations that list our “Lesson Guide”, use the link provided to navigate to the Teacher view for the lesson cited, hover over the slide image, and then click “edit/preview” to fully access this component. Then, you can click through the slides to find the relevant ones for each citation.
