What are standards?Standards are goals set at the state level.
These goals outline what students should know and be able to do
by the end of the year in each subject.
How is standards based grading different?
Teachers use a variety of strategies to teach each
standard in order to support individual student growth.
Students learn specific skills throughout the year to meet year-end goals.
Expectations are higher due to assessing on standard depth.

How is standards based grading different?
Students are given tasks throughout the school year to assess if they have
met each standard.
If students have not met a standard, teachers are able to re-teach using
different strategies and assess again.
Remember, the goal is to meet standard requirements by the end of
the year.
Not on the first try.
In order to provide a more accurate assessment of student learning, the standards-based report card clearly
indicates what a student actually knows.
The focus shifts from grading to student growth and progress.
Standard scores are updated continuously throughout the year.

Standards - Based Learning Cycle
1. Teacher focuses instruction on standards.
2. Students learn skills to meet standards.
3. Students complete tasks to assess if they meet standards.
4. Teacher scores each assessed standard which reflects where students are in their learning.
5. Teacher identifies knowledge gaps and re-teaches standards.
Students complete tasks to assess if they meet standard.
6. Students progress toward meeting each standard by end of the year.
IF the student has not met the standard YET:
● The focus is on student performance over multiple opportunities, not simply grading and averaging tests and quizzes.
● Teachers collect evidence of student achievement for each standard. This is done through careful observation, examination of student work, discussion, projects, performance tasks, and assessments.
● Teachers record information about each child’s progress, analyze and compile this information, and use this data to evaluate a child’s progress towards meeting grade level standards.
How are my child’s scores determined?
Students will receive 3 progress reports this year which will show the level of progression towards mastery for each taught standard.
Each progress report comes out at the end of the nine weeks with the last one issued in May.
The final issue is the report card.
