Whole
Numbers
(MA3-4NA) –
Orders, reads
and
represents
integers of
any size and
describes
properties of
whole
Numbers.
-Represent two
and three digit
numbers using
objects, pictures,
words and
numerals
-Count forwards
and backwards
by ones from a
two-digit number.
-Arrange
numbers of up to
three digits in
ascending order
- Counts forwards
and backwards
by tens on and off
the decade with
two and three
digit numbers.
-State the place value of digits in
numbers of any size
- Arrange numbers of any size in
ascending and descending order
- Record numbers of any size using
expanded notation,
eg 163 480 = 100 000 + 60 000 + 3000
+ 400 + 80
-Partition numbers of any size in non-
standard forms to aid mental
calculation, eg when
adding 163 480 and 150 000, 163 480
could be partitioned as 150 000 + 13
480, so that 150 000 could then be
doubled and added to 13 480
-Use numbers of any size in real-life
situations, including in money
problems
-Interpret information from the
internet, the media, the environment
and other sources, that use large
numbers
-Recognise,
represent and
order numbers to
at least tens of
millions
-state place value
of digits in
numbers of any
size
-Identify factors
and multiples of
whole numbers
MATHS GROUPS
Stage 3 teachers have organised students into 3
maths groups across the stage. The purpose of these
maths groups is to best cater for the individual needs
of the Stage 3 students.
Students will participate in maths groups five times

SEMESTER 1: HISTORY AND SCIENCE
History Focus The Australian Colonies
This topic provides a study of colonial Australia in the 1800s. Students look at the founding of British colonies and the
development of a colony. They learn about what life was like for different groups in the colonial period. They examine
significant events and people, political and economic developments, social structures and settlement patterns.
Students learn about the diversity of Aboriginal Australia at the time of European arrival and learn about how the
arrival of the Europeans and the establishment of the colonies diversified the country even more. This unit helps
students to develop understandings of when and why the other Australian colonies were established.
Community and Remembrance
This topic provides a study of identity and diversity in both a local and broader context. Moving from the heritage of
their local area, students explore the historical features and diversity of their community. They examine local, state
and national symbols and emblems of significance, and celebrations and commemorations, both locally and in other
places around the world.
Science Focus Earth’s Place in Space
This unit focuses on the Western science method of gaining knowledge, including using different models to test
theories and explain observations. Students are introduced to some of the evidence that led scientists to conclude
that Earth is a planet orbiting the Sun while rotating on its own axis, and is just one of several planets in the Solar
System. For example, students learn how the rising of the Sun and Moon in the sky can be explained by the rotation
of the Earth.
Package it Better
This program provides opportunities to develop an understanding of the design of packages and the choice of
appropriate materials to use. Students design and test a package that will safely deliver a fragile gift. Through
investigations students observe and gather information about what makes a successful package.
