A quick note, to let you know how much I appreciated the time and effort 50 adults and over 30 students spent on improving the school facilities over the weekend. The results of several studies into the relationship between quality learning environments and academic results show that improving the school’s overall learning environment can considerably improve the performance of students in their studies. A professional looking setting creates an atmosphere where people take pride in belonging to that place which also contributes to improved learning outcomes. As a result of the volunteer / community support over the weekend we believe we have saved approximately $15,000 that can now be put towards other resources. We also labelled and catalogued valuable literacy and numeracy resources, built most of a turkey enclosure (keeps turkeys in and foxes out…) to enhance the Ag Block, replaced soft-fall underneath the Primary playgrounds, mulched the garden beds, and much more.

Working Bee What a fabulous working bee!

Thanks again for your contribution – it is much appreciated! Staffing Welcome to Robyn Paterson who has won an Assistant Principal position with us until the end of the year. Robyn brings a wealth of experience across the district and will add much to our team.

We are already looking at structures for 2015. Please let us know, in writing, if your child will not be attending Moonta Area School next year. Also, if you have family or friends moving to the district and who definitely want to enrol their children here, please let us know so they can be considered in the class placements. We would like as much information about 2015 numbers as possible so we can structure our classes according to student needs.

The 2014 Music Concert was held on Wednesday the 6th of August at the Moonta Town Hall. This was our first time at the Moonta Town Hall and thanks to Mr. Hamdorf and Mr Ivens, all was organised well on the set. A cold winter’s night yet so many parents and friends came to support our musicians and choir. Mr Ivens provided guitar music before the concert which gave a great atmosphere. The MAS Choir opened the night with three songs that they will be performing at the Festival Theatre later this term. Michelle Giesecke’s keyboard students followed with music such as ‘The Big Bang Theory’, ‘Hedwigs Theme’ and ‘Chicken Dance’, including an instrumental percussion item. A rap song, ‘Hopeful’ was next by Chloe and Dean Minter. Woodwind students looked good and sparkled with the instruments. Solo items followed by Nathan Hamdorf leading with his tenor saxophone with ‘Uptown Girl’ before finishing with ‘We will Rock You’. The woodwind students were followed by an impromptu act by our Japanese Exchange girls singing together in wonderful harmony with ‘Let it Go’ in Japanese. Vince Ivens’ guitar students then performed with a mixture of blues, rock and soul. Our MAS Senior Band closed the evening with ‘Never Tear Us Apart’, and ‘Are You Mine’. A big thank you to Vicki Earles for photography and to the students who helped set up and packed up on the night. We’re looking forward to next year’s concert already, see you there. By Michelle Giesecke

On Sunday, the 10th August, Moonta Area School farewelled our twelve visitors from Japan. It was clear to me that many friendships were made on our journey as tears were shed by many. Although our visitors were here for only two weeks, during this time they made many friendships and became part of our Moonta community. I feel very privileged to have been part of this experience. Not only have I had a ball, it was also very enjoyable to be part of their learning journey. I wish the Japanese students all the best with their English studies. I would like to say a special thankyou to those families who supported us by taking a student into their home. I would also like to thank our school and wider Moonta community for welcoming our Japanese visitors. If you would like to be involved in our program in 2015, please return the slip below to the front office. Thank you, Stacey Golding

Grease the Musical On Wednesday August 6th the Yr 12 English class travelled to Adelaide with Mrs Westbrook and Mrs Harvie to view the musical Grease at the Festival Theatre. The musical starred Rob Mills as Danny, Gretel Scarlett as Sandy, Bert Newton as Vince Fontaine, Todd McKenney as Teen Angel, John Paul Young as Johnny Casino and Val Lehman as the Rydell High Principal, all well known for their numerous theatrical and television performances. The musical is based on the movie and included all the favourite characters and songs from the film. The performance was energy packed and had us bopping along in our seats and singing the songs in our heads for hours afterwards. Some of the students had never experienced live theatre before so to view such a visual feast for their first experience was “awesome.” The musical students will now construct a slide show and present an oral on the types of conflict in the musical and their relationship to the plot, themes and character development, in order to satisfy a requirement for the “Text Production” part of the Year 12 English course. Parent and Student Subject Counselling Information Evening Earlier this week students in Years 9, 10 and 11 were given a letter with a reply slip regarding the Parent and Student Subject Counselling Information Evening that will be held on Wednesday August 27th, (Week 6). It is important that parents and students attend this evening to hear the latest information so that they make informed decisions about subject choices for 2015, as those choices impact on career pathways.

Presentations will take place in the staffroom as in previous years. Times are as follows:

Current Year 9’s going into Year 10 – 6:30 to 7:00pm

Current Year 10’s going into Year 11 – 7:15 to 8:00pm

Current Year 11’s going into Year 12 – 8:15 to 9:00pm

All students are expected to attend even if their parents are unable to do so. There is a lot of information to be presented and all of this cannot be repeated in each individual counselling session.

Students will need to sign in and collect an information package from the front office area before entering the

staffroom. At the completion of each presentation students and parents will be able to move to the library to

talk to individual teachers about specific subjects, and make appointments for subject counselling which will

occur in Week 7.

If you have any queries please contact Mem Westbrook, Sam Schultz or Ashley Dearlove on 88252088.

The MAS Choir combined with the KMS Choir at the Kadina Show on Sunday 17th August to perform six songs from the upcoming Festival of Music program. ‘Talk of the Town’, ‘Ease on Down the Road’ and ‘Turn the Beat Around’ were but a few performed. KMS student compares announced the songs as they went along and the choirs sounded and looked great with their movement and sign language in the tune ‘New Tomorrow’. The Choirs looked bright and vibrant in their performance T-Shirts which they will wear at the Festival Theatre.

The Kadina show was a great opportunity to show the community what Copper Coast schools are doing with singing in schools and to practice performing in front of the public. We’re feeling very confident that MAS is ready for our big concert in Adelaide. Moonta’s concert is week 9, Wednesday 17th September, 7:30pm at the Festival Theatre. Tickets went on sale Monday 18th August. Please contact the school if you would like to buy tickets as a group at a slightly reduced cost.
