TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In brushing up for “Catholic Jeopardy,” it might help to know that there is only one feast on the calendar for a thing, rather than a per-son or mystery. It’s for a chair: Saint Peter’s chair in fact After the Resurrection, there can be no doubt that the disciples reserved a special place for Simon Peter in the upper room. Lat-er, Peter became the bishop of Antioch in to-day’s Syria, the place where we were first called “Christians.” From there, he went to Rome, the center of the Empire, where it is said that Peter sat in a chair in the house of Priscilla and Aquila to instruct his flock. Jesus, in entrusting the keys of the Kingdom to Peter and his successors, entrusted his compassion and mercy to them, and charged them with pointing to the Kingdom of God. Compassion and mercy are to resonate through their teach-ing. Since the ancient sign of a teacher is the chair (“disciple” literally means one who sits at the feet of a teacher), Peter’s chair has long been treasured. Today there is a symbolic shrine of Peter’s chair above the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. This monument is the last work of Bernini, a huge bronze throne supported by four doctors of the Church: Augustine and Ambrose from the Western Church, and Chrysostom and Athana-sius from the East. High above it is the alabas-ter window of the descent of the Holy Spirit. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Music Ministry Stewardship - A Way of Life

Reflecting on God’s Word A 2006 movie called Love Actually has one of the best openings in recent years. It begins with two young people running toward each other and falling into each other’s arms, kissing joyfully. Then you see a mother being hugged by her two little girls, then two older women, per-haps sisters, embracing. As these scenes give way to oth-ers, you become aware that all this takes place in an air-port at the arrivals gate. Accompanying these images is a voiceover. Whenever he feels down about the condition of the world, the speaker goes to the arrivals gate at Heathrow airport in London. Despite the fact that there is so much hatred and greed in the world, he says, Heathrow is one place where things seem different. At Heathrow love is every-where. All the while you hear this voice, you are watching people rush into each other’s arms. For a full minute you see the world as a welcoming, warm, loving place. You know it’s something of a set-up because who goes to meet people at airports other than family, good friends, people in a lov-ing relationship? But isn’t this God’s plan for the world, what God wants most from us: love God; love one anoth-er. The voiceover concludes by noting that right before the planes hit the Twin Towers in New York City, all the calls that went out were messages of love. People chose to have their final words be professions of love. Making that choice on a daily basis is what makes us perfect—that is, full-grown, complete, holy. James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Living God’s Word We pray to God to continue to pour the Holy Spirit into our hearts so that we can love with God’s own love, when our own ability to love fails us. We pray that we can grow into that full maturity that we see in Jesus, who prayed for his enemies from the cross. Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Friday Stations of the Cross and Soup Supper During Lent we are all invited to discover the true purpose of our beautiful Stations of the

Cross as an inspiration for prayer and contemplation on the journey of Jesus to his cross, death and resurrec-tion. Each Friday during Lent (March 3 to April 7), our faith community will gather in Church at 6:30 pm to prayerfully remember Christ's journey to Calvary. Imme-diately following the Stations, we will share a light sup-per of soup and bread prepared each week by a different Parish group. This supper of the poor will put us in mind of our less fortunate brothers and sisters. An offering will be taken up to help feed those whose plates are empty. March 3 will be hosted by the Liturgical Council.

REVISED INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY In the event of inclement weather, Holy Redeemer by the Sea Parish WILL celebrate weekend Masses as scheduled at both locations. On weekdays, we will fol-low any delays or closures announced by the Dare County School System. Please check their website at http//www.dare.k12.nc.us/ for these announce-ments. Any delay in opening means that the office and the Church will remain closed for the same duration an-nounced by the school system. The start of morning Mass or Communion Service will be delayed by the same time period. Please do not venture onto Church property during the hours of the delay. For any other activities that would have occurred during the closure, such as Scripture Study, Divine Mercy, Committee Meetings, etc., the leadership of that activity is to make and circulate the decision regarding delay or cancella-tion. We ask that, when deciding whether or not to travel to Mass or Church activities, you pay special attention to any emergency conditions or closures as announced by the State, the County and each Township. Never put yourself at risk of accident or physical harm to come to Church in dangerous conditions, even if a delay or emer-gency has not been announced. We have been assured by the Diocese of Raleigh that the Catholic faithful are not obligated to attend Mass when prevented by unsafe travel conditions.

Men’s Retreat A men’s "Day of Reflection" will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church, 2700 E. 4th Street Greenville, on Satur-day, February 25th. Fr . Joseph Mulroney will be pre-siding and presenting the message: "Unleashing the Man God Intended ." We will have a Mass, presentations by Fr. Joseph, discussion, adoration and an opportunity for Reconciliation. A light breakfast and lunch will be served. The fee is $15 payable at the door. Please call the church office at 252.757.3259, ext. 201 to register so we can plan for food and reconciliation.

Salesian Sunday Reflection

Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday February 19, 2017

In today’s Gospel Jesus calls us to a higher love. Jesus calls us to forgive and love our ene-mies! Clearly, this is no small task. St. Francis de Sales stresses that perhaps the best way to be instruments of God’s merciful, forgiving love is to first accept that same divine merciful and forgiving love ourselves. Truly in no way must we lose heart. For even though we are weak, our weakness is not nearly as great as God’s mercy toward us, who desire to respond to God’s love. All of us are subject to some passion or changes and ups and downs. Do not worry about these feelings. Persevere in your call to holiness. In all good faith, you are trying to do all for God. It is God’s merciful love that constantly transforms us, so let us do what we can. First thing in the morning, prepare your heart to be at peace. Then take great care throughout the day to frequently call your heart back to that peace. And as it were, take your heart in your hand. If you happen to do something that you regret, do not be astonished or upset. Acknowledge your failing. Quietly place yourself before God, and try to regain your gentle composure. Say to your soul: “There we have made a mistake, but let’s go on now and be more careful.” Each time you fall do the same. No matter how frail and weak you feel, remember that the divine Craftsman delights in putting up magnificent buildings with badly twisted piec-es of wood that are good for nothing. When you are inwardly peaceful, don’t miss an opportunity to perform as many acts of gentle-ness as you can—and as frequently as you can—no matter how small these acts may seem. For as our Lord says: “To the person who is faithful in little things, greater ones will be given.” Walk very simply along the way our Lord shows you. Don’t worry. For if little chicks feel per-fectly safe when they are under their mother’s wings, how secure should the children of God feel under God’s protection! God’s merciful love is eternal.

DIVINE WISDOM The Lord’s message, through Moses, was to “take no revenge and cherish no grudge . . . love your neighbor as yourself” (Levi cus 19:18). We might think, “Great in theory, but not always real-is c!” Then Jesus in today’s Gospel goes even fur-

ther. Take a slap in the face and then turn the other cheek? Treat enemies the same as friends? Again, we’re tempted to think that those are nice ideals, but not very prac cal in the “real world.” Paul echoes Jesus when he tells the Corinthians that what passes for human wisdom is absurdity to God. Divine wisdom casts sunshine on the good and the bad, showers rain on the honest and the dishonest—without dis nc on. We must exam-ine our wisdom and common sense to see how they compare to the wisdom of God, and make adjustments accordingly. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
