“In the Blink of an Eye…”

When my two boys were younger, I often heard the cliché about how fast time will fly and that I should savor each mo-ment because in the blink of an eye they will move from babies to boys to men. During that eyeblink, we went to many school concerts, traveled to every gym and ballfield around the area, carpooled, held our breath during the middle school years, waited for the results of driver’s tests, anxiously looked for college acceptance letters and watched with tears in our eyes as our gowned sons marched into graduation ceremonies while Pomp and Circumstance played in the background. We left them at their respective post-secondary institutions and were thrilled and relieved when the job offers were accepted. Phew! We made it.

When my husband and I were in the thick of raising our children, try as we might, it was hard to slow down, reflect and wonder if we did that parenting thing “right.” Now we have the benefit of hindsight, experience, age and perspective to look back and learn from. Perhaps one day we will be grandparents and can, if asked, share our wisdom with our boys for them to consider. If that is what life has in store, here is what I would share:

-Be a parent, not a friend.

-Be a guide, not a director.

-Love enough to say no and mean it.

-Be involved, but not overly involved.

-Do not rob your children of the learning opportunities that come from the inevitable mistakes that they will make.

-Let your children own their successes and their failures.

-Be present.

-Listen.

-Don’t own their grades but lay a foundation for the importance of learning.

-How important will the moment/decision be in 5 minutes, 5 days, 5 months or 5 years?

The time is approaching when I will be creating class lists for next year. We look at so many universal factors and take great care and time when trying to create balanced classrooms. Inevitably, teacher requests will also come from parents (these should be done in writing and submitted by April 15th) which will be given thoughtful consideration but not always granted.

In the faster than the speed-of-light time that it took for my boys to grow from babies to men, they have had many different teachers, coaches, teammates, bosses, and colleagues, requested or not, and each one of them provided an opportunity for them to learn and grow. So my final piece of parenting wisdom should they ever ask, would be, “It will be ok.”

With kids in mind,

Lisa Schreiner, Principal

The School District of La Crosse has begun ac-

cepting registrations for the 2019-2020 Four-Year-

Old Preschool Program. Any child, who is 4 years

old on or before September 1, and lives in the La

Crosse School District attendance area is eligible

for preschool. Our preschool program is a 2.5 hour

program housed at Southern Bluffs Elementary and we will be offering a.m. and p.m. sessions.

The preschool program is free for any eligible child. Please call 789-7006 with any questions or

to begin the registration process.

Calling All Kindergartners The School District of La Crosse is now accepting Kindergarten registrations for the 2019-2020 school year. Families with a child that will be five years old as of September 1, 2019, and has not attended a School District of La Crosse preschool, must register with the District by stopping by the Welcome Center at Hogan Administration Center at 807 East Avenue S. You will need to bring proof of address (lease, utility bill, etc.) and the child’s birth certificate. If your child attended a district preschool, they will be automatically enrolled at their boundary school. If you have any questions, please call the Welcome Center at 789-7756.

For the 26th consecutive year, students in 1st through 5th

grade will take part in the American Heart Association’s Jump

Rope for Heart. This activity is a visible way for students to em-

phasize the benefits of physical activity on a healthy heart, have

fun, and participate in a life-long way to exercise. Information

and pledge sheets will be sent home soon. Students will be

participating during Phy. Ed. class on April 8-10. Please send

pledge sheets in with your student during these dates.

Session 3 Art Club:

Session 3 Art Club will be running from Tuesday, March 19th - May 21st. It runs from 3:20-5:20. Please send your child with a healthy snack and a water in order to keep their creative juices flow-ing! If you have yet to pay your $10, please send it with your child as soon as you can. The money will be used for supplies that we use during our studio time. Thank you for letting your child partici-pate in art club this year and taking time out of your schedule so that they can be creative. Youth Art Month:

Youth Art Month provides an opportunity for our student artists to have their art displayed at the Southside Library in April. Letters will be going home in early April for those students that have been selected this year to represent the art work that Southern Bluffs students have been creating. The art reception will be at the South Side Library on Thursday, April 25th from 3:30-5:30pm. Stay tuned to hear which artists will be on display in the next newsletter!

Nutrition Info

½ cup of shelled edamame has 90 calories and provides iron, fiber, and protein.

Fun Facts

Some call edamame the super vegetable because it is the only vegetable that contains all nine essential amino acids.

Did you know that edamame is considered a protein food as well as a vegetable by the USDA? It packs a double punch!

Edamame are immature soybeans that are still in their pods. They are green and the pods are slightly fuzzy! The pod is not edible.

Uses

For a simple snack, blanch edamame pods in salted water, drain, and serve sprinkled with sea salt. Kids can help squeeze the pods to

pop out the edamame!

Cooked, shelled edamame is a great addition to stir-fries and salads. It can also be added to hummus and guacamole! Another easy

option?

Add a sautéed bell pepper and a few handfuls of cooked edamame to taco meat for a nutrition boost!

Family Friendly Activities

Can you name at least 7 different varieties of beans? In which recipe(s) would you most likely find each type of bean? Find a

recipe that features multiple types of beans (think chili or soups!) and make it for dinner.

March is a great time to plan your spring garden! Choose a few new plants to try this year – might we suggest edamame?

Pick:

•Edamame is rarely sold fresh (check your farmers’ market!), but it is available frozen (both shelled and unshelled) all year.

Looking for local? Snopacbrand sells a local, frozen

option.

Store:

•Keep fresh edamame dry in a perforated plastic bag in the

refrigerator. •Frozen edamame can be kept in the freezer for about 6-12 months or until the use by

date on the package.

Prepare:

•Edamame (whether shelled and unshelled) can be boiled, steamed or microwaved. The pod is inedible and should be

discarded after cooking.
