support to the Angel Fund/Red Bag Collection you are helping provide fi-nancial assistance to a number of school families. These funds enable parents to send their children to SSPP, where they receive a quality Catholic education and have access to an aca-demic program that has excelled at preparing children for their years of education beyond SSPP. From July 14—November the Angel Fund/Red Bag Collection has received $5,838 in donations and $2,976 from diocesan Harvest of Thanks Campaign for total of $8,813. Be an angel & give generously to the Angel Fund / Red Bag Collection that will be taken up sometime this month.

‘Come follow me…and I will make you fishers of men’ is the call and invi-tation of Jesus to his first disciples. That call has not changed nor has the invitation to each of us and all generations. Jesus came to inaugurate the ‘Kingdom of God’ and all of his words and actions initially established that kingdom among us. It really is God’s reign over our hearts and lives…but not in domination but in true freedom and unconditional love. Jesus came as the ‘one mightier than I’ says John the Baptist. Jesus comes with the power of his word and deeds to free us and all mankind from the ‘prince of this world’ which is the evil one who enslaves us to his lies. Jesus is claiming us as God’s own children and giving us again the freedom of the children of God which was lost by Adam’s sin. Will we listen to the call of Jesus to repentance and belief in the Gospel? Will we be willing to undergo the necessary change of attitude and change of life as is called for by Jesus’ word and call? We see the first disciples ready and willing as they listened and followed. Can we do the same? This Sunday we hear of Jesus entering a place of worship and study with the gathered people. He is proclaiming and teaching them of the Kingdom of God and they are amazed at his teaching. There is also a man with an unclean spirit and the demon who possessed him cries out identifying Jesus for who he really is… ‘I know who you are – the Holy One of God’. The people question and wonder about Jesus and his identity since he teaches with authority…but have not yet come to clear and true faith in him. We are the ones who hear and see all these events and are invited to make a clear and com-plete commitment to Jesus and an act of humble faith ready to follow him. Thank you…Thank you…to all who helped made Catholic Schools Week a great success and a lot of fun! Thank you to Mr. Palmer our staff & teachers who give so much to form our students and help them develop their skills and help them to learn. But most importantly they share their faith and help our children to grow in love of Jesus and the Church. Our parish school is a major mission of the whole parish. We have been forming and educating children for nearly 150 years…(our anniversary will be in 2018). That means many, many families and lives have been impacted and changed through our sacrifices and lovingly sharing our faith. Let us continue with great en-ergy and dedication! Special celebration…of Candlemas will be on Monday, February. 2nd with all of SSPP children attending the Mass that morning. It is the Mass when we bless candles used for the liturgy and for home use. There is a procession into the church recalling the meeting of Jesus and the Holy Family with Simeon & Anna in the temple. We go into the church…moved by the same Holy Spirit…to meet Christ in the Liturgy and the Sacraments. We desire to follow him and share our faith with others that they will know the ‘Joy’ of life in Christ and his Church. St. Blaise…(Tuesday, February 3rd during Mass) is the traditional day for the blessing of the throats…a blessing for health and wellbeing for our whole person. The tradition is that this Bishop and Martyr healed a young boy who was choking on a fishbone. So the blessing reflects the desire to be healed of diseases of the throat as well as every other illness. That blessing takes place on Feb. 3rd…after the homily of the Mass. Ash Wednesday…Wednesday, February 18th…Masses at 8:15 AM & 6:30 PM…ashes given during Mass.

Today the 2nd Collection will be for the Souper Bowl Collection that will be given to CAMA for the needy of Collinsville

Mon., Feb. 2: 8:15am All School Mass Tues., Feb. 3: 8:15am All School Mass, Blessing of throats during Mass Mon., Feb. 16 NO SCHOOL, Presidents Day Holiday Principal’s Notes: I would like to send special thanks to the parents/guardians/grandparents who financially support our school. That is certainly a great sacrifice in the current economic climate. I believe that your investment returns a great dividend. Our students learn and live the Good News every day. We don’t mask our Character Ed programs, so as to be politically correct. We realize that it may be a sacrifice financially, but we feel that it is a worth-while investment in your child’s future. We annually have students in the top ten academically at CHS, as well as those who go to a Catholic high school. We regularly hear from CHS teachers how well our students do in their classes. This year we have a large number of our 8th graders who plan to go to a Catholic secondary school. Our area Catholic high schools continue the work started here at SSPP. Forming our Catholic faith does not stop at Confir-mation. We have dedicated faculty and staff who work for an average of 67% less than their counterparts at Unit 10. Our answer for problems in education is dedication and prayerful guidance, not throw money at it. Of course, we are helped by the concern and efforts of our parents. We strive to be partners in the education and future of our students.

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Thunderbolts and

Lightning One of the most difficult du-ties of a disciple is to follow the command of Jesus to

spread the gospel to all nations. (Lk 24:47, Mk 116:15, Mt 28:19) I think one reason may be that we don’t feel we have the authority to tell someone else what to believe. Most of us don’t think we know the gospel well enough to preach it. Or we are so afraid of offending athe-ists, that we use that fear as an excuse to say nothing. But being a disciple means following Jesus. The gospel this Sunday mentions twice that Jesus taught with more authority than any of religious leaders of Israel. So how can we get such authority?

First, Jesus didn’t get his au-thority from winning a Messiah election. And he didn’t threaten people with thun-derbolts and lightning. He certainly didn’t impress people by saying what they wanted to hear. He spoke the truth that he heard from his Father. His two main actions in his ministry were curing and forgiving people. Since the Jews thought sickness was a punishment for sins, by curing the sick and forgiving sins, Jesus showed that God loves even sinners. And those actions showed that Jesus got authority from his Father.

“But you still haven’t answered the question: How do we get that author-ity?” We get it from the Holy Spirit, in Baptism and Confirmation. And like an athlete, who may be born with strength and abilities, yet has to work-out and practice to be any good, we still need to grow in that authority. One way is to read the scriptures and pray with them, so that we get to know God through his Word and begin to listen to him in our prayers. We can consciously decide to see God in other people, not just those we love, but everyone, even the ones who annoy us. (And especially the ones who challenge us to be more loving, patient and forgiving.) Most parishes have programs that encourage sharing your faith, such as RCIA, Christ Renews his Parish, etc. And of course, the Eucharist and other sacraments strengthen God’s life in us. You’ll know you have that authority when you can talk about your faith with confi-dence instead of hesitation, because you will be speaking from experi-ence, not second hand knowledge.

Souper Bowl Collection for CAMA Every year on Super Bowl Weekend Saturday, January 31 & Sunday, February 1, CAMA (Collinsville Area Ministerial Alliance) takes up a Sou-per Bowl Collection at all the area churches. This collection is used to help subsidize their food pantry, pro-vide funds for traveler’s aid and Pay for pharmacy purchases for the needy in the Collinsville area. Please be generous to this worthy cause.

ZIGGY’S WISDOM: LISTEN to yourself; really listen! ZIGGY’S THOUGHTS: When you speak of yourself or others, what do your words convey? About Yourself, are you a “braggart, or truly humble? About others, are your words kind, truthful and uplifting, or are they en-vious, filled with gossip and fault finding? As “Christ to others” we (you & I) should strive to have our speech be “holy in nature”.

The Gospel of Mark The Shrine of Our Lady of the Snow is sponsoring a program The Gospel of Mark presented by Mark Etling, PhD, (Affiliate Theology Teacher, at St. Louis University). In this Gospel, Mark tells of the ministry of Jesus from his Baptism by John the Baptist to His death, burial and the discovery of the empty tomb. It is theologically and historically significant for two reasons. First, because it is the oldest of the four canonical Gospels, it paints the most “human” portrait of Je-sus. Second, its contents were incorpo-rated into the Gospels of Matthew and Luke a decade or more later, giving us what we now call the Synopitc Gospels. This program will be held on 5 consecu-tive Thursdays starting on Feb. 26, Mar. 5, Mar. 12, Mar. 19, Mar. 26 from 10:00am to Noon at the Shrine. Cost is $5.00per session or $25 for the series. To register or for more information, call 3 9 4 - 6 2 7 0 o f e m a i l P r o [email protected]
