NESPAK Signs Three MoUs with Turkish,Chinese & Korean Consultancy Firms
Mr. Amjad A. Khan, Managing Director
NESPAK, gave a detailed presentation to
the President of Pakistan, Mr. Mamnoon
Hussain, on the progress of construction
works at Urdu Bagh, Karachi. The detailed
architectural and engineering design has
been prepared by the Architecture &
Planning Division (A&P Division) Karachi
for the Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu Pakistan
(ATUP). The President praised NESPAK for
ensuring high standards in the
construction of the building.

Manager/Chief Architect, A&P Division
Karachi also accompanied the Managing
Director and participated in the
presentation. The presentation was also
attended by important government and
ATUP officials.
Urdu Bagh is a building complex at
Gulistan-e-Jauhar Karachi designed to
preserve a rare collection of books that
were written or translated in Urdu

language in the sub-continent before
partition. NESPAK scope of services

engineering. These companies include
Dolsar Engineering INC. Co., Turkey,
Dohwa Engineering Co. Ltd., Korea and
China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group
Co. Ltd., China. Delegates from these
world-renowned companies visited
NESPAK House, Lahore and shared ideas
for future business plans with Mr. Amjad A.
Khan, Managing Director, who gave them
a detailed briefing about the professional
capabilities of NESPAK.
The Chinese, Turkish and Korean firms
also agreed to launch joint ventures with
NESPAK by utilising expertise and
experience on a reciprocal basis. The
collaboration will be based on an equal
footing between NESPAK and the foreign
firms. All the three companies reposed full
confidence in NESPAK and showed keen
interest in collaborating on future business
ventures.
Under the MoUs, NESPAK and foreign
firms will endeavour to jointly undertake
projects in Pakistan. Major prospective
jobs to be targeted by these companies
include mass transportation projects
including intercity and light rail
metropolitan project, coal fired thermal
power plants and hydropower projects.
Keeping in view the friendship that already
exists between these countries, the
collaboration of the state enterprise with
these companies will take this relationship
to new heights.
NESPAK has already established its repute
as a top class engineering consultancy
organisation by rendering its services for
various important projects in 38 countries
of the world.

Switzerland (CCC) and SMEC
International (Pty.) Limited,
Australia is carrying out
feasibility studies for the
installation of cable cars along
three different routes in Murree.
In this regard, progress review
meetings were held in Murree
and Islamabad on July 3, 2015
and September 1, 2015 respectively under
the chairmanship of the Prime Minister of
Pakistan, Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.
Mr. Amjad A. Khan, Managing Director
NESPAK and Mr. Sohail Kibria, Project
Manager/General Manager, Geotechnical
& Geoenvironmental Engineering Division,
attended these meetings. MD NESPAK
briefed the Prime Minister about the
progress of works regarding feasibility
studies for all three routes i.e., Musyari to
Old Commissioner's Camp, Murree
Brewery to Pindi Point and Lower Topa to
Kashmir Point. The Prime Minister
appreciated the progress of work and
discussed various issues related to the
implementation of the project. The Prime
Minister also directed Tourism
Development Corporation of Punjab
(TDCP) and NESPAK to initiate work on the
feasibility study of another cable car route
from Bastal Morr to Pindi Point. The
helicam videos of all the routes and a 3D

the Canal Expressway project from Gattwala to
Sahianwala Interchange. The total length of the project is
25km. Other features include 3+3 lane with two
underpasses, two flyovers, one subway and three canal
bridges.
Mr. Amjad Saeed, Resident Engineer NESPAK, briefed
the team about the progress of project. The Law Minister
emphasised that the project should be completed within
this year. He said that this expressway will serve as a
route to national growth and development and will act as
a direct signal free corridor to Pakistan’s largest industrial
estate.
NESPAK is playing a pivotal role in the successful execution of the Lahore
Orange Line Metro Train Project. The design and construction supervision of the
project are being undertaken by NESPAK. The project will cover a 27km distance
and there will be 26 stations throughout the route. The Chief Minister Punjab,
Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif visited the project site and appreciated the
efforts of NESPAK. He was satisfied with the progress of works. NESPAK is
working with enthusiasm and taking necessary remedial measures to ensure
proper implementation of health, safety and quality plan as well as the
accomplishment of the entire project within the contractual time frame.

NESPAK has completed the construction
supervision of the dualisation of Ibri-
ad’Dariz-Miskin Road in Oman. The
project was handed over to the Client on
September 30, 2015. It consists of a four
lane asphalt road along with service roads
in the built-up area of Murtafa, Hara Al-
Balushi, Al-Araqi, Al-Aineen Ad'Dariz Karn
Kabsh and Hajirmat situated in Wilayat
Ibri, Governorate of Al-Dhahara Region,
Sultanate of Oman. Total length of the
project is 34km along with 32km service
roads on both sides.
The Client of the project is Director
General of Roads, Ministry of Transport
and Communications, Sultanate of Oman.
The main carriageway consists of two
lanes of 3.75m on each side, 2.5m paved
shoulder, outer and inner
shoulder varies from 1.0m
to 1.50m. The scope of
work included
construction of
roundabouts, vehicular
underpasses, pedestrian
underpasses, Irish
bridges, box culverts,
retaining walls, Irish
crossing on service
roads, intelligent
pedestrian crossing
systems, signalised
junction, street lighting, protection works,
safety barriers and guardrail. The utility
works include relocation of fiber optical
cable, water and electrical lines. The
project is under maintenance period and
some protection and interlocking works
are in progress.
Wadi Shafan Road, OmanWadi Shafan Road, OmanWadi Shafan Road, OmanNESPAK provided design and construction supervision
services for Wadi Shafan Road, Oman. The project consists of
an asphalt road, situated in Wilayat Khaboura with a small
segment traversing Wilayat Saham. The project starts from
village Biayaiq and traverses the bank of Wadi Shafan while
crossing the wadi at various locations and ends in village Aqir
Al-Abriyyin. The road also provides an access to different
villages on its way. The project comprises the construction of a
new single carriageway having a length of 26km.
Special Economic Zone Authority
at Duqm (SEZAD) has engaged
NESPAK and partners to provide
resident supervision services for
construction of an integrated waste
treatment, storage and disposal
facility at Duqm, Oman. Total
project duration is twelve months.

The new road shall have a 7m wide carriageway and 1.5m
wide asphalt paved shoulders on each side.
Owing to the location of wadi on one side and hillside on the
other, excessive drainage culverts are involved. In addition,
multi-cell culverts have been provided at wadi crossings which
make a total of 60 culverts.
The completion period of the project has been extended with
no change in cost of the project. Overall progress of the project
is 68 percent.

September 10, 2015 for giving a
presentation to Pakistan’s Ambassador to
Oman on the design of a New Embassy
Complex at Muscat,Oman. Mr. Mahmood
A. Malik, Regional Manager Muscat was
also present on the occasion.
The project of Sohar Roundabout
comprises the construction of Sohar
Interchange that is located in Sohar city
falling in North Batinah Governorate,
Sultanate of Oman. It is on Sultanate's
major highway leading from Muscat to the
United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of
Saudi Arabia. It was started on August 11,
2012 and is likely to be completed by the
end of January 2016. The project is
located in downtown city area which

NESPAK wins Contract for Rehabilitation of Haveli Main Line Canal
The Water Resources Division, NESPAK
won a consultancy contract for the
“Feasibility Study for Rehabilitation of
Haveli Main Line (HML).” The contract was
signed by Mr. Tariq Altaf, Vice
President/Head Water Resources Division
and Mr. Riaz Rasheed, Chief Engineer
Multan, Punjab Irrigation Department on
December 16, 2015 . The main objective
of this feasibility study is to improve the
conveyance efficiency, reliability and
durability of the Haveli Main Line canal as
per design discharge by rehabilitating and
remodeling the entire canal system. Mr.
Fazal Rehman Kashif, Principal Engineer,
is the Project Manager.
SBP Awards Three Projects to NESPAK
The Building Services Division, NESPAK
won three projects of State Bank of
Pakistan (SBP) through a competitive
bidding. The scope of services
encompasses feasibility study, detailed
design and construction supervision for
the upgradation and improvement of
existing HVAC systems at the State Bank
of Pakistan, Banking Services Corporation
(SBP-BSC) Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and
Multan. The accumulative capacity of the
HVAC systems is 2500 tons with
corresponding estimated project cost of
Rs. 1 billion. The completion period of
each project is twenty months. Mr. Munir-
ud-Din is Project Manager for the SBP
BSC, Rawalpindi and Faisalabad, and Mr.
Asad Riaz is the Project Manager for SBP
BSC, Multan.

The Punjab Irrigated Agriculture
Investment Programme (PIAIP) Project,
being financed jointly by the Asian
Development Bank (ADB) and the
Government of Punjab was started in May
2009. Under this programme work is in
progress on the rehabilitation projects
which are in construction phase at
Suleimanki Barrage, Trimmu, Panjnad
Barrages and Pakpattan Main Canal
System.
The PIAIP project has now been extended
up to June 2016. The extended scope of
work includes controlling seepage/water
logging along Trimmu-Sidhnai Link Canal
and enhancing the capacity of Rasul-
Qadirabad link canal, Qadirabad-Balloki,
Balloki-Suleimanki link canals and water
resources development in smaller
Cholistan. In continuation of these studies,
the PIAIP Consultants have also been

entrusted with a unique task of water
resources development in Greater
Cholistan. The pre-feasibility study has
also been initiated.
A site visit to Greater Cholistan was
carried out by ADB Mission along with the

objective of the visit was to
understand the concept of water
resources development in
Cholistan area. During the visit
ADB Mission team leader
emphasised that master planning
for the whole Cholistan should be
undertaken with specific
emphasis on grazing
management, rainwater
harvesting and livestock being the
emphatic of the project.

NESPAK Awarded Sanitation Project in Multan
A NESPAK-Artelia joint venture has been
awarded the project “Master planning of
sewerage, water supply and drainage
system of WASA, Multan”. The scope of
work includes preparation of GIS based
maps, conditional survey, master planning
and design of water supply, sewerage and
drainage system for the entire Multan City.
The agreement of the project was signed
on November 03, 2015 and total duration
of the project is 12 months.
NESPAK Completes Lakhodair Lot 1&2, gets more work
The Environment & Public Health
Engineering Division, NESPAK has
successfully completed design review,
design vetting and construction
supervision for Lot 1 & 2 of a landfill site at
Lakhodair, Lahore in accordance with
international practices. In the light of
previous experience, the Client, Lahore
Waste Management Company (LWMC)
has further engaged NESPAK for
construction supervision of Lot 3 & 4 of
Lakhodair landfill site. The scope of
services includes preparation of pre-
qualification documents, tender
documents, design review and
construction supervision. The total cost of
the project is Rs. 2 billion.
NESPAK has also been awarded the
project of Environmental Impact
Assessment (EIA) of landfill site at
Lakhuana, Faisalabad by the Faisalabad
Waste Management Company (FWMC).
The inception report has been submitted
to the Client while work on the interim
report is in progress.

NESPAK to Carry Out Relocation of WASA Services along Orange Line Metro Train Project

Contractors have
been mobilised at

started the relocation
work for this Rs. 1.8
billion project.
NESPAK has been awarded design and
construction supervision of four
accommodation blocks (G+4) at Haroon
Bahria facing Regional Cooperation for
Development Highway, Karachi by
Pakistan Navy. A formal agreement has
been signed in this regard. The project
features both commercial and residential
facilities comprising 32 shops on ground

NESPAK is introducing a new concept of
groundwater recharge by constructing a
rubber tube barrier. The project is financed
by the World Bank under PMO-Barrages of
Punjab Irrigation Department.This concept is unique for three eastern
rivers which usually remain dry for the
whole year except flood days. NESPAK,
World Bank and PMO Barrages officials
visited the proposed location for rubber
dam in December 2015. Various sources
for water supply to this site and layout
were discussed at the site. Based on the feasibility study report
prepared by NESPAK, a site on River
Sutlej near Bahawalpur has been selected
for the pilot project. A rubber tube type
barrier having height of 3m will be installed
across the
river, for
storing
temporary
surplus water,
which will help
in recharging
the
groundwater
table. The
rubber tube
barrier will also
provide a
facility for
recreation.
Revival of Degraded Rivers in Punjab

NESPAK Awarded Construction of 4 Haroon Bahria Accommodation Blocks, Karachi

four blocks is Rs. 200 million. The project

Internal Quality Audits (IQAs) were
carried out by the quality management
engineers of Monitoring & Quality
Control Division on design and
construction management related
activities in various divisions and offices
to ensure compliance with the Quality
Management System (QMS). These
divisions/offices include Agriculture
Division, Islamabad Office, Disaster
Management & Reconstruction Division,
Peshawar Office, Karachi Office and
Architecture & Planning (A&P) Division
Karachi. The construction sites on “220
kV Gujrat Substation along with Allied
Transmission Line” of Power &
Machinical Division and “Navy
Residential Complex at NORE-1, Karachi”
and “New Surgical Oncology Complex at
JPMC, Karachi” of A&P Division, Karachi
were visited during the period. Audit
reports for the non-conformances of
design and construction phases were
generated based on audit findings, which
were later closed after ensuring
implementation of recommended
corrective actions. The External
Surveillance Audit was conducted by the
Lead Auditor of TUV Austria Bureau of
Inspection and Certification on December
15 and 17, 2015 at NESPAK Lahore and
Karachi Offices. The Audit was extensive
and its objective was to measure the
conformance of NESPAK Quality
Management System to meet the
requirements of ISO 9001:2008 Standard.
The Quality Management System was
found compliant with the requirements of
ISO 9001:2008 Standard by the Quality
System Auditor and NESPAK was
recommended for continued certification.

Mr. Tariq Altaf, Vice President,
Water Resources Division (WRD)
presented his paper “Hill Torrents of
Pakistan” at the 73rd Annual Session of
the Pakistan Engineering Congress
held at a local hotel in Lahore on
December 24, 2015. The paper was co-
authored by Mr. Abdul Khaliq Hashmi,
Technical Adviser WRD who was also
present there. It was emphasised that
the government should give priority to
hill torrent management because hill
torrents cause huge damages worth
billions of rupees and possess
enormous potential of water
conservation and land utilisation for
agriculture. The chairman of the
technical session and participants
belonging to various organisations
appreciated the paper and agreed to
the proposal of hill torrent management
in Pakistan.

presented a technical paper titled
"Application of Computational Flow
Dynamics (CFD) Analysis for Surge
Inception and Propagation in Low Head
Hydropower Projects" on November 21,
2015 on National Multidisciplinary
Engineering Conference at the University
of Management and Technology (UMT),
Lahore. Mr. Mohsin Munir, Senior Engineer,
Water Resources Division was the co-
author of the paper and participated in the
conference.

presented a technical paper titled
“Instream Hydrokinetic Power Technology-
A case study of Ghazi Barotha Power
Channel” at the 73rd Annual Session of the
Pakistan Engineering Congress held at the
PEC Building on December 25, 2015. The
paper was authored by Mr. Muhammad
Mohsin Munir, Senior Engineer and co-
authored by Mr. Tariq Altaf, Vice President
and Mr. Javed Munir, General Manager
Water Resources Division. The paper
concluded that power potential of 15 to
20MW could be harnessed through the
installation of Instream Hydrokinetic
turbines at the Ghazi Barotha Power
Channel. The chairman of the technical
session and participants belonging to
various organisations applauded the new
concept for power production and
emphasised the need for detailed
investigations for the feasibility of the
proposal.

Congress from December 24-27, 2015.
This paper emphasises the importance
of using the Digital Elevation Model
(DEM) for extracting geological and
geomorphological profile of a terrain.
The Chairman of the technical session
and participants belonging to various
organisations recognised the
importance of GIS in the field of civil
engineering.

world's leading journal dealing with
geospatial information science and
engineering having five year impact
factor of 2.33. Mr. Abdullah has done his
M.S in Photogrammetry and
Geoinformatics (EUR-ACE Engineering)
from Stuttgart, Germany.

Engineering Division participated in a
meeting related to WWF-Pakistan's
project, City-wide Partnership for
Sustainable Water Use and Water
Stewardship for small and medium
enterprises (SMEs) in Lahore, funded by
the European Union. The City-wide
partnership offers an opportunity to a
diverse group of actors (public, private,
civil society, academia, financial
institutions etc.) to form a strategic
collaboration with a mutual commitment to
mitigate shared water risks posed by
unsustainable water consumption,
pollution and increasing water scarcity to
the city of Lahore. The city-wide
partnership was launched in 2014 followed
by one-on-one meetings with the relevant
stakeholders.
The city-wide partnership is a voluntary
initiative that aims to promote constructive
open dialogues on the priority water risks,
mobilise resources, foster new
partnerships for improved water

EIA for Dry Port at Havelian
NESPAK has been assigned a task of
carrying out Environmental Impact
Assessment (EIA) Study for the
establishment of a new dry port at Havelian
as part of feasibility studies for the Karachi-
Peshawar ML-I project being managed at
the Structural Engineering Division. The
Environment and Public Health Engineering
Division, Health Safety Environment &
Climate Change Section will conduct the
EIA Study in accordance with the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
guidelines. The objectives of the EIA Study
include data collection, identification of
environmental impacts along with
suggestions for taking mitigation measures
and preparing EIA Report and
Environmental Management Plan. The EIA
team has started desk studies and the field
teams would soon be mobilised for primary
environmental data collection.

The Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Engineering Division,
NESPAK has been assigned a task by Water and Power
Development Authority to provide consultancy services for
“Strengthening Works of Mangla Reservoir Rim” along the Mirpur-
Kotli Road near Khaliqabad Chowk and the Mirpur Bypass Road. The
scope of services includes detailed design, preparation of tender
documents and construction supervision. Mr. Abdus Salam Khan,
General Manager/Head Dams and Water Resources Section of the
Division is the Project Manager. Mr. Muhammad Azam, Chief
Engineer, will act as team leader.

Architects of Pakistan, Karachi Chapter (IAP-KC) attended the
ARCASIA 18th Forum held from November 10-16, 2015 in Ayutthaya,
Thailand as an official delegate representing the Institution of
Architects Pakistan. He also made two separate presentations in
both General Council Meeting and the ARCASIA Committee on
Social Responsibility. Ms. Mumtaz Jilani, also attended the
conference and attended the “ARCASIA Committee on Education.”
ARCASIA is a joint forum of 19 member countries of Asia, providing a
platform to discuss the current architectural issues and ideas
confronted by the region. This is also a prominent platform for
architects and thinkers who intend to serve as Asian 'catapult of
minds' on matters concerning architecture and environment in the
Asian context. The theme for ARCASIA Forum 18 in 2015 was “Future
of the Past”.
