RTS Staff Handbook5
Student Achievement
Yes, this one is out of alphabetical order because student achievement must continue to be our number one priority at Remington Traditional School. High student achievement is reached in a number of ways with the cooperation of the whole staff and the school community. We can’t control a student’s home situation, but we can certainly control what we do as a staff team. The things we can control are high expectations, strong academic focus, using data and student success or failure to make instructional decisions, willingness to change what we’re doing for kids to make it better, modeling for kids what we expect from them, consistency, structure, and perhaps the most important one of all: caring relationships.
Caring relationships are the foundation of any great school. To continue to build on our success we must care for our colleagues and care deeply for the kids. Anyone can care for the students who make good grades and behave well. It takes a true educator to care for the students who struggle with learning or with their behaviors. Remember our vision.
Schoolwide Procedures
Another one out of alphabetical order . . . At the beginning of the 200-2002 school year the RTS staff agreed to support each other by putting in place certain schoolwide procedures to maintain high expectations and structure, maintain strong academic focus, and promote student responsibility. These procedures are printed in the appendix of this handbook. For the sake of consistency and effectiveness, it is important that we all work together to implement them.
Fun
Okay, one more . . . Having fun and enjoying what we do makes a difference in how effective we are in our jobs. We spend the majority of our day at work, so let’s not spend this time getting caught up in negativity about students, fellow staff members, workload, or things we can’t control. The only thing we can truly control in our life is our own attitude and our own actions. Remember: Choose Your Attitude, Play, Make Their Day, and Be Present. Let’s continue to make this a great working environment for each other!
Absences and Attendance
Work Hours: Teacher required minimum daily work hours at RTS are 7:50 a.m. to 3:05 p.m.
Teachers: If you are going to be absent call the substitute line at 064 internal or 253-4326 external for a substitute. A blue substitute folder with clear lesson plans must be left on your desk to be available in the event of an emergency. For a pre-planned absence, clear and specific plans must be available for the substitute.
Leaving Early: If a staff member needs to leave the building early for an emergency, please notify the office and the principal before leaving to ensure student coverage. If a staff member desires to leave early for another reason, advance permission from an administrator is necessary.
Students: By 8:30 a.m. attendance should be taken in Power School. If a student arrives after the 8:05 bell without the green admit to class pass, send the student back to the office for a pass. For school funding purposes it is important that accurate and timely attendance is taken.
RTS Staff Handbook6
Accidents and Injuries
Staff: If any injury occurs to you at school between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. see the school nurse for the proper forms. If an injury occurs at school before or after those hours go directly to the current district recommended healthcare center. Notify the principal as soon as possible and complete any necessary forms the next day.
After-School Student Activities
Extended-Day Academy: The Extended-Day Academy is sponsored by the principal with the expertise and leadership of our reading specialists. Teachers in the academy are paid to provide structured literacy instruction for one hour two times per week.
Homework Club: Homework Club is currently sponsored by the principal and various staff members. Students report to the library to receive homework assistance from Pattonville High School students.
Intramurals: Basketball, volleyball, and/or flag football tournaments and activities may be held involving the middle level students.
Newspaper: Newspaper is sponsored by one or more staff members via a stipend and is made up of 6-8 grade students. They are responsible for publishing a monthly student newspaper.
Student Council: Student Council is sponsored by one or more staff members via a stipend and is made up of 6-8 grade students. They represent student perspective on various school affairs and sponsor various activities during the year.
Tutoring: Tutoring opportunities through district funding are usually available at some point in the school year.
YMCA: The YMCA provides an after school program for a limited number of families. The YMCA primarily uses the RTS cafeteria, with the gymnasium available as needed. Parents should contact the YMCA for information at 34-52-822.
Announcements
It is our goal to keep all loudspeaker announcements to a minimum in order to maintain structure and academic focus, though there will inevitably be times when announcements must be made during the school day. Regular daily announcements over the loudspeaker are made immediately following the Pledge at 8:05 a.m. or before dismissal at 2:50 p.m.
We also try to keep the morning announcements to a minimum in order to allow instruction to start promptly. If staff information can be shared in advance via email to staff, please do so whenever possible.
Assemblies
Teachers must escort their students to and from assemblies and supervise them during the assembly. Classroom teachers should remain with their classes during Awards assemblies, such as Honor Roll and End-of the Year Awards.
For other non-awards assemblies, it is desirable for the classroom teacher to remain with his or her class; however, if a class is with a special area teacher at that time, the classroom teacher may be dismissed, and the special area teacher should remain with the class.
RTS Staff Handbook7
Audio-Visual
· Equipment and equipment repair requests are handled by the librarian.· Students should not push A.V. carts or carry A.V. equipment.· Films, cassettes, CD’s etc.: Copyright policies must be observed at all times. When in doubt see the librarian or the Media Coordinator at 058. Materials can be ordered from the Cooperating School District. See the librarian for details. All films must be G-rated or PG-rated with parent and principal permission. · All films must directly support student learning of Pattonville curriculum at your grade level and be approved by the building administrator.
Awards
Student recognition for effort and success is important to create a positive school climate and student achievement. Listed below are the main student year-end awards that are given out at our annual Awards Night.
In addition to the awards listed below, there may be many other special awards given out by classroom teachers and the Art, Music, and P.E. teachers, our librarian, our counselor, or for Geography Bee, or for Science Fair. These will also be given out at our annual awards night.
Staff attendance is expected at Awards Night.
Pride of Remington Traditional:Staff nominate and vote for one 7th and 8th grade student for this award. The award is given each year to one student from 7th and 8th grade who have exhibited for 2 or more consecutive years superior scholarship, initiative, attitude, cooperation and individual improvement. Savings Bond8th grade students who have missed no more than day of school for the year will receive a $25.00 savings bond.
Bell & Pledge Schedule
The daily bell and pledge schedule is included in the appendix. Classroom teachers who are scheduled for the pledge should send up 3 to 5 students a couple of minutes before 8:05 am. Our goal is to do the pledge promptly at 8:05 a.m. each day.
Boys Town, Discipline, & Student Responsibility
All classroom teachers are responsible for their own discipline within the classroom. All schools in the Pattonville School District follow the Pattonville Behavior Guide. It divides behaviors into Levels , 2, or 3 and outlines possible consequences.
Teachers should address all Level I inappropriate behaviors within the classroom. Students may be sent to the office if they have displayed Level II inappropriate behaviors.
Boys Town Model: The RTS staff has been trained in the “Well-Managed Classroom” through Boys Town. It is expected that all staff that have been trained will practice and implement this model to prevent and address inappropriate classroom behaviors.
The power of this model is that when it is implemented consistently, and the social skills are taught proactively and repeatedly, it will lead to improved student/staff relationships and improved student responsibility over time. The best way to develop student responsibility and avoid repeated office referrals is to build relationships with students within the classroom.
Each grade level has certain Boys Town RAP skills on which to focus (RAP = “Respect and Pride.” This scope and sequence is listed in the appendix for your reference.
Time Outs: If a staff member must send a student to the office for a “time-out” (not an official referral) they should be accompanied with a hall pass or make a quick phone call to the principal (440) to be sure that the administrator is available to talk with the child.
Secretaries cannot be responsible for monitoring students who have been sent to the office for discipline purposes. Secretaries may send students back to the appropriate classroom if no administrator is immediately available. This is an important safety and liability issue.
Do not put students in the hall outside your room for a timeout unless they are supervised by an adult.

RTS Staff Handbook0
Depending on the severity of the referral you can send the student to the office or allow him/her to remain with the class until he/she is called to the office. Your referral will be sent via Powerschool directly to the principal’s and secretary’s e-mail.
Recess/Lunch/After-School Detention: Any teacher may assign detention to a student as a consequence for inappropriate behavior. The staff member assigning detention is responsible for supervising that student in his or her classroom or other appropriate location.
CIC: Only an administrator may assign students to CIC. CIC stands for “Classroom Intervention Center.” It is a form of in-school suspension and is used by all the elementary schools. CIC is a district program, not a Remington Traditional program. It is supervised by a teacher assistant.
Budget
Teachers and grade levels are allocated a specific amount each year to spend on teaching and office supplies. Teachers then order the supplies and submit them to the principal’s secretary for principal approval. Once approved, the principal’s secretary orders the materials to be available for teachers in August.
Please email the principal if during the school year you want to check on your remaining supply budget allocation or any activity account budget (camp, 4th grade, grants, etc.)
Busses and Student Transportation
Students are to ride their assigned busses unless the teacher has received written and signed notice from the parent or guardian with different instructions such as a different stop, a different bus, or walking instead of riding. Please send all such notices to the office for approval. Copies of the notice will be made and shared with each of the secretaries.
Students are not permitted to ride bikes, scooters, or skateboards to or from school.
Community Service
The district and school goal is to involve 00% of students in community service. Each classroom is expected to be involved in a classroom community service project during the school year.
Computers/Technology
The Instructional Technology Specialist is the lead technology person in the building. She is available to teach new skills to teachers and assist teachers with teaching technology skills to the students.
The role of the ITS is changing. It is now the district expectation that the classroom teacher is responsible for learning the technology, and with this advanced technology training, begin to take on the primary responsibility for teaching the skills to students and integrating technology into lessons where appropriate.
Activities with technology should support learning of the contents and processes outlined in the state standards and Pattonville’s curriculum.

Use of the computer lab is scheduled by the classroom teacher via First Class Calendaring. Scheduling is done on a flexible basis, as is the district expectation.
Conferences
Parent-Teacher conferences are held at the conclusion of the trimesters for grades K-8. To maintain strong home-school communication, our goal is 00% conference participation for parents.
Copying
RTS staff members currently do not have a copy code in order to access the copy machine in the workroom. Please make every attempt to plan ahead and send large copying jobs and complicated printing jobs to the printing department as described in the Printing section on one of the following pages.
Last-minute copies: Please plan ahead with lessons and copying to avoid having to send last-minute copy requests up to the office with a student during the day.
If a staff member must send up a last-minute request, please avoid sending it to the office during the hours of :30 a.m. and :00 p.m., because the office staff does their lunch at that time, thus they are short-handed. We must avoid having office staff go back in the workroom when no other secretarial staff is in the office.
Custodial & Classroom Care
It is each classroom’s responsibility to care for the classroom during the school day. Student chairs should be placed on top of their desk upon dismissal. As much trash as possible should be picked up off the floor. The custodial staff is then responsible for vacuuming, dusting, washing chalkboards and emptying trash daily. In the event of a custodial absence with no substitute, the remaining custodians divide up the rooms to cover as much as possible for the absent team member (if you come in and your room has not been cleaned, email the principal).
When maintenance repairs are needed, email the principal with details. The principal will follow up with maintenance.
Dress Code
Teaching Staff, Administration, and Office Staff: Professional dress is desired Monday through Friday, though Fridays can be a more casual day. Just remember that though it may be a Friday, we still interact with parents and the public and therefore the impression we make through our clothing choices is important. A recommendation for attire on a casual day is RTS spirit wear when possible, though it is not required.
Custodians and Cafeteria: Custodial staff and cafeteria staff have district-required uniforms.
Students: A copy of the dress code is included in the appendix of this handbook as well as the Parent/Student handbook.
Emergency Drills
Fire, tornado, earthquake, and security alerts drills are held throughout the year as required by state and district policy. You must keep your RTS Emergency Procedures Folder (clear plastic) posted by the door.
◼
◼
◼
RTS Staff Handbook2
The drill schedule is included in the appendix.Fire: Evacuate to assigned area, following your posted classroom plan.Tornado: Turtle position in the hallway.Earthquake: Turtle position under desks.Security Alert: (Lockdown) Close blinds, lock door (if possible), gather against lockers away from view of the door or gather in the storage area with the door closed.
Facilities Usage
Special Classroom Activities: If a staff member is planning a special activity in the cafeteria please see the clerk to schedule it on the building use calendar. Notify the principal. Then see the day custodian to confirm any arrangements you may need such as tables and chairs.
If a staff member would like to plan a special activity in the gymnasium, library, or other room, be sure to talk to the P.E. teachers, librarian, or other affected staff members to be sure that it is okay to plan the event in their teaching area. Then see the day custodian to confirm any arrangements you may need such as tables and chairs.
Faculty Meetings
Faculty meetings are held at 3:05 p.m., usually every third Wednesday throughout the year, and as needed. They are typically held in the library or in the cafeteria. Staff attendance is expected and important, so please mark the dates on your personal calendar in advance. The dates of the pre-determined meetings are listed in the Calendar of Events. We make every effort to complete faculty meetings by 4:00 p.m., however there are times when we may go longer to effectively accomplish a task. If you can not attend a faculty meeting for reasons out of your control, written contact must be made with the principal prior to the meeting.
If a staff member would like to have time on the agenda, please see the principal at least the week before the meeting to request minutes on the agenda.
Faxes
Personal faxes should be kept to a minimum. However, if you need a fax sent, you may place it in the hanging file above the fax machine and the office will send it for you. You must fill out a fax cover sheet and clip it to the fax. Once it has been sent, the originals will be put in your mailbox.
Field Trips/Extra Recess/Special Activities
Field Trips: All classes will receive a field trip allocation each year. To request a field trip, submit the field trip request form to the office staff. To be approved, field trips must directly support student learning of Pattonville’s curriculum at your grade level. Please notify the nurse and notify the cafeteria in the event that lunch will be missed.
Permission slips: Permission slips are required for students if you leave the school property, including Vago Park.
Extra Recess/Special Activities: If you wish to leave the classroom with your class to go out for an extra recess or visit another class. Please

notify the office where you are going and for how long. We must be able to quickly find you and the students at all times.
Forms
Professional leave, personal leave, family leave, bereavement, legal leave, change of status, work orders, field trips, print requests, laminating, and other necessary staff forms are available in the gray cabinets in the lounge. All forms should be submitted to the office staff
Fund Raising
All fund raising events must be pre-approved by the administration. The RTS PTO holds one major fund raising event during the year. Per district request, no food fund-raising events may be held during student lunch times.
Grades, Progress Reports & Grade Recording
Classroom grades must be based on high expectations, state and district performance standards, and reflect the degree to which students have demonstrated learning of the state standards and the Pattonville curriculum.
Grades will be reported on a trimester reporting system.
All K-8 teachers, Art, Music, & P.E. will complete progress reports for all students mid trimester. Report cards and conferences will take place on October 26 & 27, February 5 & 6. To maintain strong communication, our goal is 00% conference participation for parents.
Hall Passes
All children must have a hall pass unless they are being escorted by an adult. Passes to the nurse should specify the reason for the visit.
The Heartbeat
“The Heartbeat” is the newsletter sent from the school to the RTS families every trimester. It is sent home with the students. All staff will submit articles or information for “The Heartbeat.” It can be another great way to communicate about what is going on in your classroom or recognize students in the classroom.
The principal is responsible for “The Heartbeat.” If a staff member has an item for “The Heartbeat” it should be submitted to Jeannie via email. She will send a reminder email out to staff when she needs the articles. It is then sent to printing for final processing and copying.
Homework
Daily homework (Monday – Thursday) is important as an extension of the daily learning activities. Homework should help bring students to mastery and application of the concepts and process of the state standards and Pattonville’s curriculum. Homework should meet the needs of the individual child. If a child has demonstrated mastery of a concept then homework needs to be enrichment and/or bring the student to deeper knowledge of the concept.
RTS Staff Handbook4
Lesson Plans
Teacher daily lesson plans must be prepared in advance and be available for viewing each day. Plan books are provided to staff at the beginning of each year. Lesson plans should make clear the lesson objectives and provide enough detail so that a substitute can teach effectively.
In event of a teacher absence the blue substitute folder with the clear lesson plans must be left on the teacher’s desk.
Library
The library media specialist works directly with the classroom teachers to plan activities to support learning of the contents and processes outlined in the state standards and Pattonville’s curriculum. The library can be used as an extension of classroom lessons and activities. Use of the library is scheduled by the classroom teacher via First Class Calendaring. Scheduling is done on a flexible basis, as is the district expectation.
Mailboxes
Mailboxes are in the workroom. Please check your mailbox at least first thing in the morning and before the close of school each day.
Nurse
Medication: All student medications are kept by the nurse. No other staff person is to give any type of medication unless he or she has received specific training.
All students must have hall pass or be accompanied by an adult to the nurse’s office.
OASIS
OASIS volunteers are retired individuals who tutor grade - 3 students once a week in language arts. Though they do some tutoring, their primary purpose is to build a special relationship with a youngster in need. A teacher in the building is the organizer for the OASIS tutoring.
Open House
The annual RTS Open House is a very important event for “officially” kicking off the new school year. It is structured to keep the focus on allowing parents to both meet the teacher and learn about the classroom academic, behavioral, and procedural expectations.
Major curriculum and instruction goals and topics for the year homework policy use of planners (grades 4 –8) or weekly/daily communication sheets (grades k-3),

Special Area teachers will also utilize the 20-minute times to share information about their programs. Parents are encouraged to visit those classrooms when not visiting the regular classrooms.
Paraprofessionals
In addition to the regular duties of working in classrooms and providing supervision, paraprofessionals are available to cover classrooms in emergencies and so that classroom teachers can attend meetings, such as IEPs or other conferences. However, due to the changes of how paraprofessionals are utilized, please try to schedule such meetings at times when the classroom teacher is available.
Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO)
The RTS PTO holds monthly Executive Board meetings in the library. They hold General Assembly meeting in conjunction with many of the monthly evening events. Staff attendance is strongly encouraged.
Membership: The RTS Staff has a tradition of 00% membership in the PTO. We appreciate all they do for our school, and they appreciate all that our staff does for the kids.
Parties
There are three PTO-sponsored parties each year: Fall Party, Holiday Party, and Valentine’s Party. The PTO room parents are responsible for planning and guiding the parties, though teachers should remain with the class during parties. Special area teachers and other staff are encouraged to visit the classroom parties to enjoy the time with the kids.
Pets
Teachers are responsible for their own in-school pets. Please see the principal to get approval before bringing a pet to keep in school or to have a pet visit. It is important that teachers make sure that no student has a pet allergy. If a student is bitten by a pet, send the student to the nurse’s office immediately, no matter how minor it may seem.
The science coordinators office may provide supplies needed for the care of pets. The coordinator’s office number is 5333.
Printing
The district printing department does an excellent job of printing materials and returning them in a timely manner. They are able to do binding, enlarging, laminating and many other special things. Please contact them at 6503 if you have a specific question. The forms for print requests and laminating, are available in the gray cabinets in the lounge. Any print requests or laminating requests should be submitted to the office.

Professional Leave
Professional leave is an important part of learning and growing in our chosen areas. Professional leave is granted by the principal for teachers to attend workshops and other school-related release time that fall under the goals of the district and the school.
A Professional Leave Form is available in the drawers in the lounge and must be completed and submitted to the principal. If approved, please call for a substitute well ahead of the day of the event.
Professionalism
If administrators receive parent concerns regarding a staff member, the administrator will first encourage the parent to share their thoughts with the staff member in order to provide that staff member the opportunity to respond directly. The administrator will also notify the staff member that a concern has been shared.
If a staff member has a concern with a colleague he or she should first talk directly with that colleague. If the issue cannot be worked out among the colleagues, then as a last resort the administrator may bring the two staff members together to facilitate if necessary.
Schedules
All school schedules are determined by the principal with input from staff as necessary. The master schedule is designed to maximize classroom instructional time by limiting interruptions and providing large blocks for literacy and other instruction. In addition, all regular classroom teachers have common plan time each day in at least one 40-minute block.
For your convenience, the following schedules are included as an appendix in this handbook: Master schedule, teacher planning schedule, supervision schedule, and the bell and pledge schedule.
Staff Lounge
The lounge is a place for all staff to go to work, eat, or relax. No students are permitted in the lounge unless they have received previous special permission from an administrator, though this should be rare. Most of the district and school forms are found in the lounge along with a telephone, restroom, the PTO freezer, and the Ellison Die cutter.
Each person using the lounge is responsible for keeping it an attractive and inviting place to be.
Student Files
Student files are located in the office and maintained by a paraprofessional. If you need to view a file, you may sign it out on the clipboard and look at it, but it must remain in the office. Any information that needs to go into the student file may be placed in the tray on the top shelf of the cabinet to be filed.

Supervision of Students
Under no circumstances should a student or students be left unsupervised. In case of an emergency a teacher can ask another teacher to cover the class or call the office for coverage. Please do not sit students in the hallway. If there is a behavior issue, please send student to the office. If quiet time is needed, check with Allison in the library. Do not place students in the hall outside your classroom.
Supplies
All classroom supply needs should be met through grade level budget. However, if you have a need for additional supplies and your budget has been spent, see the administrator. In the office workroom, feel free to use any of the supplies in the unlocked cabinet if needed.
Telephones & Voice Mail
Telephones in the classrooms are for the use of the teachers. Students need the teacher’s permission to use the phone for emergency or disciplinary purposes. Students should remain under the direct supervision of the teacher if the student is using the telephone (if the student leaves a message, please let the office know to put the call through to the students).
If classroom telephone or voice mail repairs are needed, please speak with the Instructional Technology Specialist. She will submit the necessary work order to the technology department. To be safe, check your voice mail each day regardless of whether the light is flashing or not.
Visitors
Visitors will be buzzed in by the office staff. If you have a parent or someone visiting you, please let the office know so we do not question them if it is not necessary. Each visitor must sign in at the office.
Work Orders
Work orders should be emailed to the school administrator if something in the classroom is in need of maintenance.
Workroom
The workroom houses the mailboxes, copier, paper, envelopes, printers, catalogs, and various other items. There is a telephone in the workroom available for staff use. Each person who uses the workroom is responsible for maintaining its cleanliness and neatness.

Remington TraditionalSchool-wide Procedures Checklist
For an effective, consistent, structured, and focused learning environment the following school-wide procedures should be followed. They should all be explained, rehearsed, and reinforced. RAP Skills and Character Plus attributes are the heart and foundation of our school-wide procedures and are the basis for how we work with kids in a positive and proactive way.
Classroom teachers greet and stay with the classroom as students arrive.Classroom teachers have a structured morning routine similar to the seven steps below, where students:
.Quietly walk into the classroom.2. Remove coat or jacket and hang it up.3. Empty backpack or book bag.4. Have two sharpened pencils, books, and materials ready.5. Hand in all completed homework following the proper procedure.6. Read the agenda for the day.7. Begin the “prime time” assignment.
Classroom teachers have a “prime time” assignment for the students as they arrive. The prime time assignment enables the teacher to effectively handle attendance and other morning logistical needs.
The prime time assignment is already posted before the students enter the classroom. It is posted in the same location every day.
The prime time assignment is not graded. It is a procedure.Students are seated and completing the assignment when the tardy bell rings.Pledge daily at 8:05 a.m. A group of 3-4 students arrive in the office a couple of minutes BEFORE 8:05 a.m.Classes walk quietly in the hallway at ALL times.Special area teachers and special education teachers have structured procedures to start and end classes effectively.Small groups or individual students have a hall pass to go to and from other rooms.
Homework is assigned at each grade level each night Monday – Thursday. Homework can include but is not limited to nightly reading, reinforcement for skills already taught, ongoing projects, etc. A general rule of thumb is 0 minutes per grade level to a maximum of about an hour.
Classroom teachers set a procedure for using planners and returning homework.Lunchroom supervisory staff and classroom teachers develop, explain, rehearse, and reinforce procedures in the lunchroom.Recess supervisory staff and classroom teachers develop, explain, rehearse, and reinforce procedures at recess.Supervisory staff reports promptly to their assigned areas to ensure student safety.Classroom teachers pick up students promptly outside after the bell. Students are taught to enter quietly.Classroom movies are few and far between. Movies are effective to use when they are directly related to Pattonville’s curriculum. An occasional non-curriculum-related Rated-G movie may also be used as a special reward for a special classroom accomplishment (2 or 3 times a year)

HAZING AND BULLYING
General
The Pattonville School District prohibits all forms of hazing, bullying and student intimidation. Students participating in or encouraging inappropriate conduct will be disciplined in accordance with JG-R and the discipline guides. Such discipline may include, but is not limited to, suspension or expulsion from school and removal from participation in activities. Students who have been subjected to hazing or bullying are instructed to promptly report such incidents to a school official.
In addition, district staff, coaches, sponsors and volunteers shall not permit, condone or tolerate any form of hazing or bullying or plan, direct, encourage, assist, engage or participate in any activity that involves hazing or bullying. District staff will report incidents of hazing and bullying to the building principal. The principal shall promptly investigate all complaints of hazing and bullying and shall administer appropriate discipline to all individuals who violate this policy. District staff who violate this policy may be disciplined or terminated.
The district shall annually inform students, parents, district staff and volunteers that hazing and bullying is prohibited. This notification may occur through the distribution of the written policy, publication in handbooks, presentations at assemblies or verbal instructions by the coach or sponsor at the start of the season or program.
Definitions
Hazing – For purposes of this policy, hazing is defined as any activity, on or off school grounds, that a reasonable person believes would negatively impact the mental or physical health or safety of a student or put the student in a ridiculous, humiliating, stressful or disconcerting position for the purposes of initiation, affiliation, admission, membership or maintenance of membership in any group, class, organization, club or athletic team including, but not limited to, a grade level, student organization or school-sponsored activity.
Hazing may include those actions that subject a student to extreme mental stress including, but not limited to, sleep deprivation, physical confinement, forced conduct that could result in extreme embarrassment or criminal activity, or other stress-inducing activities. Hazing may also include, but is not limited to: acts of physical brutality; whipping; beating; branding; exposing to the elements; forcing consumption of any food, liquor, drug or other substance; forcing inhalation or ingestion of tobacco products; or any other forced physical activity that could adversely affect the physical health or safety of an individual.
Hazing may occur even when all students involved are willing participants. Hazing does not occur when a student is required to audition or try out for an organization when the criteria are reasonable, approved by the district and legitimately related to the purpose of the organization.
Bullying – For purposes of this policy, bullying is defined as repeated and systematic intimidation, harassment and attacks on a student or multiple students perpetuated by individuals or groups. Bullying includes, but is not limited to; physical violence, verbal taunts, name-calling and put-downs, threats, extortion or theft, damaging property, or exclusion from a peer group.
