Traffic flowing along Stacey Street

Roads and Maritime is investing more than $30 million to upgrade Stacey Street and Fairford Road in Bankstown. Our work will add additional lanes in both directions as well as provide improvements to two key intersections.

Stage one of the upgrade is now complete, which means motorists are experiencing the benefit of an extra southbound lane on Stacey Street and extended dual right turn lanes into Macauley Avenue. These upgrades have improved traffic flow and journey reliability to better connect motorists to southern Sydney, the Sydney CBD and Sydney’s west. Stage two will start in the second half of 2019 and when this project is complete people will spend less time in traffic and more time with their family and friends.

Key benefits • Reduced congestion on one of Sydney’s key

arterial roads by providing additional north and south bound lanes on Stacey Street, increasing space on the road to allow more motorists to use the corridor.

• Easier access into and out of Macauley Avenue for road users by providing dual right turning lanes onto Stacey Street, and extending the right turn bay on Stacey Street for motorist turning into Macauley Avenue.

• Improved traffic flow into Stanley Street from Stacey Street by allowing more vehicles to queue in the extended right turning bay.

• Improved safety for pedestrians when crossing Salvia Avenue with the installation of a new pedestrian crossing lights and pram facilities.

• Improved travel time, journey reliability, and safety for all road users.

Stage one is doneWe have completed the first stage of road widening on Stacey Street by providing an additional lane for southbound motorists between Macauley Avenue and Stanley Street. We have also extended the existing dual right turn bay on Stacey Street for road users turning right into Macauley Avenue.

Roads and Maritime Services would like to thank local residents for their patience.

These upgrades will reduce congestion, provide more reliable journey times and improve safety for all road users.

The completed work includes:

• installing an additional lane on Stacey Street southbound, between Salvia and Daphne avenues

• extending the right turn bay on Stacey Street for motorists turning right into Macauley Avenue

• replacing kerbs, guttering and storm water drains on Stacey Street southbound, between Salvia and Daphne avenues

• upgrading existing street lighting on Stacey Street; southbound between Salvia and Daphne avenues, and northbound between Macauley Avenue and Stanley Street

• providing new guard rails on Stacey Street southbound, between Salvia and Daphne avenues.

Work on the second stage of improvements to Stacey Street and Fairford Road is due to start in the second half of 2019.

More benefits soonerYou spoke. We listened, which is why we’ve made changes to deliver work earlier on this project and protect open community space.

After considering comments from the community and key stakeholders about the loss of open space and the removal of trees at Stevens Reserve, we have decided not to proceed with the proposed road widening on Stanley Street, Bankstown.

This means we won’t create an additional right turn lane on Stanley Street, however we will now move the delivery of all other improvements into the second stage of construction, providing more immediate congestion and safety benefits for local residents.

We have also amended our design to relocate the pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Stacey Street, Macauley Avenue and Fairford Road from the southern side of the intersection to the northern side. This will prioritise the safety of pedestrians, ensuring they can cross the road without needing to wait at the median.

Stage two is comingRoads and Maritime will begin construction on the final stage of improvements on Stacey Street and Fairford Road soon. Before we start we will update the local community with information about our work schedule.

Work happening in stage two includes:

• installing a new lane on Stacey Street northbound, between Macauley Avenue and Stanley Street

• providing new guard rails on Stacey Street northbound, between Macauley Avenue and Stanley Street

• changing Macauley Avenue to have dual right turning lanes onto Fairford Road as well as a dedicated bus right turn lane

• installing a new lane on Fairford Road, which when complete will have three northbound lanes and a dedicated left turn lane at the intersection of Macauley Avenue

• moving the pedestrian crossing across Stacey Street to the other side of Macauley Avenue to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow

• installing new pedestrian crossing lights at Salvia Avenue, near Stacey Street

• extending the right turn bay on Stacey Street southbound into Stanley Street so more motorists can queue to safely turn

• removing the permanently closed footbridge over the storm water culvert on Stacey Street directly opposite Petunia Avenue

• tree removal and tree trimming.
