Colourtoned CUTEK® stabilising oils

Exterior timbers coated with clear CUTEK® will silver with age. Specially formulated colourtones are available and can be purchased separately to mix with clear CUTEK® stabilising oils to maintain the natural timber colour character, delay silvering, and retain the ‘freshly oiled look’ for longer.

While colourtoned CUTEK® is a nish that enhances the natural character and beauty of wood, it is important to note that colortones are only designed to intensify natural colour characteristics of the timber species being coated. Therefore it is important to select a colourtone appropriate to the natural colour of the timber species being coated.

When selecting from the range of colourtones allow for the timber colour to naturally lighten during the rst three to eight months after application, as natural weathering and leaching occurs. Colourtone retention is greater on rusticated, or band sawn timbers, and may be maximised by including the colourtone in all applications of CUTEK® stabilising oils. If colourtoned CUTEK® has faded over time, wash timbers with CUTEK®QuickClean and apply a single coat of colourtoned CUTEK® stabilising oil to restore the original look of the protected timber.

What makes CUTEK® so different?

Unlike other timber coatings, CUTEK® oils work by penetration rather than by forming a film. They:

• penetrate deeply into any species of timber, including hardwoods and bamboo, to provide water repellency and assist with long term dimensional stability

• do not peel o or crack, but help to control warping, cupping, and splitting, eectively enhancing the service life of timber. This characteristic ensures that future recoat preparation consists of a simple wash-down of the timber, rather than conventional sanding or stripping, resulting in signicant savings in ongoing maintenance costs and time

• are suitable for use on weatherboads, shingles, board & batten, plywood, log buildings, beams, outdoor furniture, deckings, fascia boards, shutters, garage doors, joinery, spa pools, fences, posts... in fact virtually anything made of wood or bamboo

• are specially formulated for interior & exterior use

• can be easily applied by almost anyone.

CUTEK® stabilising oils are ideal for use as clear, water repellent protective coatings on exterior timber surfaces. Please note that the clear coated timber surface will lightly silver with age to produce a natural weathered appearance, while retaining its dimensional stability characteristics. If this natural silvering of the timber is undesirable, then colourtoned CUTEK® stabilising oils should be used to delay the silvering process in addition to maintaining and enhancing the natural colour of freshly oiled timber.

IMPORTANT In order for CUTEK® to function properly the oil must able to diuse deeply into the timber. Any situation that would inhibit this free diusion, such as the presence of any surface sealant, coating barrier or excess retained moisture in the timber, must be addressed before the application of this product.

The Product Range

CUTEK®CD50Tried and true, the original formulation that has been protecting timber from Sydney to Dubai for decades.

CUTEK®LowVOCWhile CUTEK®CD50 meets stringent foreign standards for environmental suitability, CUTEK®LowVOC is specially formulated for projects requiring the highest star ratings.

CUTEK®ProcleanCleans, brightens and restores wood surfaces back to the appearance of new timber. In addition it is exceptional at removing stubborn stains such as tannin stains, resin stains, fungal & algae stains, green CCA stains, oil & grease stains, surface greying and many other chemical stains that may destroy the natural beauty of wood.

Why do the job twice when you could do it right the first time? Make sure your builder knows to use CUTEK®.

When other coatings fail, professionals turn to CUTEK®

Whatever your application – decking, siding, railings, doors, oors or windows – CUTEK® products are proven performers. Architects, builders and manufacturers have been specifying CUTEK® for timber coating in some of the world’s harshest climates for nearly three decades.

CUTEK® is a unique penetrating oil that has proven to be the ideal stabiliser and decorative coating for exterior timber. By providing long-term water damage control, CUTEK® helps to maintain the natural appearance of timber and provides unparalleled dimensional stability.

CUTEK® stabilising oils are available in a wide range of colortones, and are complemented by CUTEK®Proclean – a professional cleaning and restoration product.

A Sustainable Choice...

Sustainability is about choosing to live in a way that reduces the human impact on our environment. This not only includes choosing products that minimise harm to the environment, but also choosing products that last longer, require less material, less packaging and transport, and don’t adversely aect the lives of those involved in the manufacture of these products.

CUTEK® products are a suitable choice for all these reasons, and you’ll benet from cost and labour savings as well, with reduced maintenance requirements.

Exposure to UV causes film to break down, allowing moisture in and creating a habitat for mould and fungal growth

UV

Traditional film-forming coatings vs CUTEK®

Water is timber’s greatest enemy. Most paints and stains attempt to control water and water vapour by forming a surface lm .

In only a short time,• UV and wear causes lm breakdown which allows water

and water vapour into the wood;• moisture moving in and out causes shrinkage and

swelling, splitting, loss of dimensional stability, greater susceptibility to environmental degradation.

CUTEK® however,• does not form a lm but diuses through the timber

controlling moisture from the inside;• signicantly slows down the rate of moisture exchange

between wood and the environment;• stabilises timber by controlling moisture for many

years, minimising movement;• is not a lm so does not need to be removed before

recoating, greatly simplifying maintenance.

IMPORTANT: Timber that is coated with a clear CUTEK® wood preservative will gradually silver over time on exposure to sunlight, while retaining the characteristics of dimensional stability and bio-toxicity. If this natural silvering of the surface is undesirable, then a colourtoned CUTEK® wood preservative must be used to delay the silvering process in addition to maintaining and enhancing the natural character and colour of freshly oiled timber. Colourtoned CUTEK® wood preservatives can still look like a clear finish, depending on the colourtone selected.

Colourtones are provided as concentrates in small tins which are added by the customer to a tin or bottle of clear CUTEK® wood preservative. One 250ml tint pot is suitable for use in 10 litres of clear CUTEK® oil, two 250ml pots are suitable for use in 20 litres. Colourtones are not available in smaller amounts, so half of a 250ml tint should be used in 4 litres of clear oil to give good colour.

MixingA full 250ml tint pot should be added to a 10 litre tin, then stirred thoroughly. If the CUTEK wood preservative has been supplied in a bottle, it may be easier to pour the contents into a bucket and stir thoroughly. Alternatively, the bottle may be shaken if it is not too heavy. Refer to the Application factsheet for complete application information.

Application Apply the tinted Cutek wood preservative as per the clear, with two thin even coats along the direction of the boards, using a brush, paint pad, fabric mop or lambswool applicator. Spraying is not recommended. Stir the tin or bottle frequently during use. Two coats are necessary — the first coat will look patchy and uneven when it dries, but a second coat applied after the first is completely dry (up to 48 hours) will leave a beautiful even matt finish through which the grain of the wood is still visible. Three coats will provide a longer lasting colour, but will obscure the grain of the timber.

Re-coat timeframeColourtones provide additional UV protection which keeps the natural colour of the timber longer than a clear coat, but they will fade over time. This will vary depending on the level of exposure to sun, rain and foot traffic. Re-coating is a simple matter of cleaning the deck followed by one coat of tinted Cutek wood preservative.

FACTSHEET No 4 – Cleaning and Maintenance

The best solution for wood protection

IMPORTANT: CUTEK® wood preservatives are designed to gradually fade over time rather than, peel off, split or crack as is the case with many conventional film forming coatings. For this reason, the rejuvenation and maintenance of CUTEK® coated surfaces is a simple, fast, and cost effective process.

How often should I maintain my deck or cladding/siding?CUTEK® wood preservatives must be reapplied as frequently as necessary to retain the natural beauty and colour of the timber or bamboo.

Recoat time varies widely according to many factors including the age and porosity of the timber, species, situation, and exposure to the weather so we are unable to offer any specific performance warranties. Typically, horizontal exterior smooth surfaces exposed to full weather such as pool decks and handrails may require recoating every 6 months to 2 years, while vertical rough-sawn cladding may require maintenance less frequently. Dense hardwoods and bamboo may need more frequent recoating in the first year, every 3-4 months, to enable adequate buildup of the CUTEK® product in the substrate.

Surfaces that have been previously coated with CUTEK® products that have faded, or started to “grey off” in the sun are easily and quickly restored to their original appearance without the need for any sanding and stripping by treatment with CUTEKQuickclean® or CUTEKProclean®, and the application of one or two further coats of a CUTEK® wood preservative.

How do I clean my deck?If the timber is only dirty and faded, CUTEKQuickclean® may be all that you need to prepare the surface for another coat of CUTEK® wood preservative. CUTEKQuickclean® is designed as a cost effective, biodegradable cleaner for the restoration of uncoated, dirty and weathered timber. CUTEKQuickclean® is less powerful than CUTEKProclean®, however it is non hazardous, and will not damage substrates or vegetation adjacent to the timber surface being restored, eliminating the need for containment or masking. See Page 2 of the factsheet for the CUTEKQuickclean® application procedure.

If your timber is quite weathered and stained, better results will be obtained by using CUTEKProclean®.

Unlike bleach and detergents, CUTEKProclean® is not considered a strong defoliant, however, the use of absorbent drop cloths to protect delicate and/or adjacent vegetation is recommended.

Because of the wide variation in discoloration and timber species that are encountered, a test area should always be cleaned prior to commencement of the project to determine how much time the restoration procedure will require, and how much CUTEKProclean® will be required. This enables an accurate application procedure to be determined and cost estimated. It is important for the user to determine the suitability of the product for its intended application.

It is preferable to use CUTEKProclean® as supplied and it must always be stirrred well before use. Sometimes however, the use of hot water rinsing combined with an easy to clean surface, means that CUTEKProclean® can be diluted with water. If a choice to dilute the product is made, always test to determine if the dilution being used is effective in cleaning. If the timber is proving easy to clean, it might be more cost effective to use CUTEKQuickclean® instead of CUTEKProclean® on a large project.

See page 3 of the fact sheet for the CUTEKProclean® application procedure.

Page 7: stabilising oils - YES BAMBOO - Treated Bamboo Decking and ... · Melbourne Factory (03) 9761 4498 Auckland Factory (09) 476 8603 ... decking, siding, railings, doors, ˚oors or windows

CUTEKQuickclean® application procedureBecause of the wide variation in discoloration and timber species that are encountered, a test area should always be cleaned prior to commencement of the project to determine how much time the restoration procedure will require, and how much CUTEKQuickclean® will be required. This enables an accurate application procedure to be determined and cost estimated. It is important for the user to determine the suitability of the product for its intended application.

PreparationCUTEKQuickclean® must be prepared by mixing one packet of the powdered concentrate with 10L of clean water and stirring well until dissolved. If the made up solution is to be applied through a water blaster venturi system then ensure that the solution concentration is increased to compensate for water dilution through the machine.

ApplicationApply CUTEKQuickclean® liberally to the timber substrate with brush, roller, garden sprayer, or water blaster venturi system. Let the CUTEKQuickclean® solution dwell on the surface for 10–15 minutes, or such time as deemed to be necessary by the test procedure. It is important not to let the substrate dry out.

RemovalOnce CUTEKQuickclean® has cleaned the timber, it must be power water rinsed (hot water works best) off. For best results wash off with high-pressure water at 1000–1300 p.s.i. pressure. Clean from the lowest point and work upwards methodically. ALWAYS clean off with a water jet that produces a fan that is 40–50mm wide about 100mm out from jet. Adopt a continuous “mowing action” working with power water fan-jet 100mm from the face of the substrate. DO NOT use “turbojets” on timber. CAUTION must be used when cleaning soft timber to reduce the pressure and avoid scouring of sapwood.

Additionally, certain types of wood surfaces may leave a raised grain effect after cleaning is completed. Sanding or poly pad scrubbing may be required to smooth out this condition.

Cleanup and PrecautionsCUTEKQuickclean® is slippery when applied to surface so use caution when walking on horizontal surfaces. DO NOT walk on surfaces coated with CUTEKQuickclean®. Water flush all equipment, vegetation, paths, concrete, asphalt, and other adjacent surfaces immediately upon contact. Leave job site free of any trace amounts of CUTEKQuickclean®. Always remember that CUTEKQuickclean® is a chemical, and refer to the health and safety considerations listed in the MSDS sheet prior to commencing any project. Never leave behind any containers or equipment, and appropriately label any containers of residue for disposal.

CUTEKProclean® application procedure ApplicationAfter testing a patch of timber and determining the required dilution, if any, apply CUTEKProclean® liberally to a pre-wetted timber substrate with brush, roller, or garden sprayer. Let CUTEKProclean® do most of the work by letting it dwell on the surface for 10 minutes–8 hours, or such time as deemed to be necessary by the test procedure. It may be necessary to scrub stubborn stains moderately with a stiff fibre brush.

RemovalOnce CUTEKProclean® has cleaned the timber, it must be power water rinsed (hot water works best) off. For best results wash off with high-pressure water at 1000–1300 p.s.i. pressure. Clean from the lowest point and work upwards methodically. ALWAYS clean off with a water jet that produces a “putty knife” shaped fan that is 40–50mm wide about 100mm out from jet. Adopt a continuous “mowing action” working with power water fan-jet 100mm from the face of the substrate. DO NOT use “turbojets” on timber. CAUTION must be used when cleaning soft timber to reduce the pressure and avoid scouring of sapwood. The longer that CUTEKProclean® is left on the substrate, the greater the rinse time required.

Additionally, certain types of wood surfaces may leave a raised grain effect after stripping is completed. Sanding or poly pad scrubbing may be required to smooth out this condition.

If CUTEKProclean® is being used to remove mill glaze (a smooth glossy surface found on smooth newly sawn timber which is impervious to most coatings) use the same procedure as above.

Cleanup and PrecautionsCUTEKProclean® is slippery when applied to a surface so use caution when walking on horizontal surfaces. DO NOT walk on surfaces coated with CUTEKProclean®. Water flush all equipment, vegetation, paths, concrete, asphalt, and other adjacent surfaces immediately upon contact. Leave job site free of any trace amounts of CUTEKProclean®. Always remember that CUTEKProclean® is a hazardous chemical, and refer to the health and safety considerations listed in the MSDS sheet prior to commencing any project. Fully protect adjacent surfaces including vegetation and be aware of the potential for wind drift into areas with cars or pedestrian traffic when rinsing or applying. Never leave behind any containers or equipment, and appropriately label any containers of residue for disposal.

Recoating with a CUTEK® wood preservativeFollowing the restoration of the timber with CUTEKProclean®, it is important to complete the restoration process by coating the timber with an appropriate CUTEK® wood preservative, following the procedure detailed in the Application Factsheet. Failure to treat the wood after restoration will result in the weathering process occurring more rapidly than it took prior to restoration.
