Information For Our First Time Guests

All children are welcome to stay with parents in the Sanctuary during worship. However, for parents of children ages 0-3 years who want nursery care, we have a well-equipped and professionally-staffed nursery at the end of the hall nearest the Sanctuary. Each child

brought to the nursery is given a number; only the parents of the child can take the child from the nursery. If a parent is needed during worship, the child’s number will appear (in red LED’s) on the black panels beneath the hymn boards on both sides of the Chancel. Parents, please bring diapers, any snacks, and formula as needed for your child.

All baptized Christians are welcome to receive the Sacrament. If you have not been baptized, please come to the Altar rail for a blessing during Holy Communion (place your arms across your chest to signify your desire for a blessing). If you would like to be baptized, please speak with the clergy after the service. To receive Holy Communion, accept the bread in your hand and place it in your mouth, then sip wine from the Chalice

when it is brought to you (guide the Chalice to your mouth please), or hold the bread, dip it in the wine when the chalice comes to you, and place the bread with wine in your mouth. If you are allergic to wheat or are gluten intolerant, please let the person serving bread know to give you a rice wafer.

The Collect of the Day

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, you have given to us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of your divine Majesty to worship the Unity: Keep us steadfast in this faith and worship, and bring us at last to see you in your one and eternal glory, O Father; who with the Son and the Holy Spirit live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Reading Genesis 1:1 - 2:4a In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

And God said, "Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

[4]

And God said, "Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it." And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.

And God said, "Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth." And it was so. God made the two great lights-- the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night-- and the stars. God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

And God said, "Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky." So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.

And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind." And it was so. God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth."

So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth." God said, "See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so. God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation. These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created.

Psalm 8 (spoken)

1 O LORD our Governor, * how exalted is your Name in all the world!

2 Out of the mouths of infants and children * your majesty is praised above the heavens.

3 You have set up a stronghold against your adversaries, * to quell the enemy and the avenger.

4 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, * the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,

5 What is man that you should be mindful of him? * the son of man that you should seek him out?

6 You have made him but little lower than the angels; * you adorn him with glory and honor;

7 You give him mastery over the works of your hands; * you put all things under his feet:

8 All sheep and oxen, * even the wild beasts of the field,

9 The birds of the air, the fish of the sea, * and whatsoever walks in the paths of the sea.

10 O LORD our Governor, * how exalted is your Name in all the world!

The Second Lesson 2 Corinthians 13:11-13 Finally, brothers and sisters, farewell. Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.

The Gospel Matthew 28:16-20

Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

Sermon The Rev. Bradford A. Rundlett, Rector

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

Leader: To God the Creator, Christ the Redeemer, and the Holy Sanctifying Spirit, we now pray.

(Pause)

Leader: Sovereign of heaven and earth, hear our pleas for the world you have made, for all that lives and breathes, for earth, air, and water; for the magnificent and fragile wonders that stretch out before us; help us cherish and protect your creation. Sovereign of heaven and earth, hear our prayers.

(Pause)

[7]

Leader: Blessed Jesus, we pray for people who suffer with poverty, hatred, war, tyranny, and natural disasters; for our neighbors struggling to survive. Give us wisdom and courage, help us put an end to injustice; and insure the well-being of all your people. Blessed Jesus, hear our prayers.

(Pause)

Leader: Holy life-giving Spirit, we pray for people who are sick or injured, who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give us wisdom, better understanding, the will and the compassion to care for one another. Holy Spirit, hear our prayers.

(Pause)

Leader: Author of everlasting life, we remember loved ones who have died and people who are dying now; help us see in death the gate to eternal life, your arms stretched out in welcome, and all the saints rejoicing. Eternal God, hear our prayers.

(Pause)

Leader: Christ our Redeemer, we pray for your Church; increase our faith and our zeal to serve, unite us in your love and truth, and refine our witness. Lord Jesus Christ, hear our prayers.

(Pause)

Leader: Sovereign, Savior, and Sanctifier, we pray for ourselves; help us acknowledge your constant providence and abundant blessings, and give us the grace to respond with gratitude and generosity. Holy Spirit of God, Spirit of Jesus Christ, hear our prayers.

(Pause)

Leader: God the Creator, Christ the Redeemer, God the Holy Spirit, we are your people. All we are and all we have is a gift from you. Accept, we pray, the humble oblation of our lives. Makes us instruments of faith, hope, love, peace, and joy; help us establish your gracious reign throughout the world. Great Sovereign God, Savior, and Holy Sanctifying Spirit, hear our prayers. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For with your co-eternal Son and Holy Spirit, you are one God, one Lord, in Trinity of Persons and in Unity of Being: and we celebrate the one and equal glory of you, O Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Sanctus WLP 858

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

The people stand or kneel.

Celebrant We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

All We remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory;

[9]

Celebrant And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Timothy and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Summer Choir To Begin June 22! During the summer, we invite all those interested to rehearse at 9:00 a.m. in the Music Room to lead the Choral Eucharist at 9:30 a.m. Our summer schedule will begin June 22, 2014. Please join us in leading song at St. Timothy's!

The GtGtL team says Congratulations & BIG Thank You As of May 2014, the Gifts to Glorify the Lord (GTGTL) campaign to raise funds for a new organ and Sanctuary improvements as well as a church reserve fund reached the end of its original 3 year donation period. Over $320,000 for the organ and building improvement fund and $70,000 for the reserve fund has been raised! This is a fantastic accomplishment in these tight economic times.

Our original goal was $475,000 to replace the pipe organ, based on bids gathered at the beginning of the campaign. In January, after holding the bid price steady for three years, the replacement cost rose to $515,000. The Vestry and Diocese challenged us to raise 80-90% of the cost to replace the pipe organ prior to signing a contract, thus, the funds raised are currently well below the needed sum. This situation has presented the GTGTL committee an opportunity to reevaluate the current approach and look at additional options. We are happy to report that we have been informed by a number of reputable pipe organ companies that our distinguished 1870 Tracker organ could be restored to be fully functional, readily maintainable, and, if desired, enhanced with additional pipes, at a cost that would allow us to complete the project—including Sanctuary and Narthex improvements—in line with the funds in hand. We are now in the process of soliciting proposals for renovation and are also pursuing new pipe organ configurations that would be less costly. We look to bring the campaign to a successful completion and continue the wonderful music tradition at St. Timothy’s.

Please note that pledgers with envelopes will continue receiving printed envelopes in the mail until the end of 2014 to continue donating if they wish. Further contributions to the organ and reserve funds will assist the church with any unforeseen costs.

St. Tim’s Viewpoint Book Club St. Tim’s Viewpoint Book Club will discuss Jan-Philipp Sendker’s book “The Art of Hearing Heartbeats” on TUESDAY, JUNE 24 at 6:00 p.m. in Room B2 at St. Timothy’s. Books should be available on Sunday June 8 at church. All are welcome to join the discussion and to share small refreshments with tea and coffee. For information, please contact Jill Cox on [email protected] or phone 703-963-8251.

An Invitation To The Women Of Saint Timothy's To all women of the church... the E.C.W. (Episcopal Church Women) group invites anyone who would like to help to join us in cleaning and re-organize Henry Hall and the kitchen prior to proceeding with plans to refurbish and create a welcoming environment for coffee hours and functions. We will meet on SATURDAY, JUNE 21 at 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Please bring a SMALL snack to enjoy with the provided tea, coffee and juice. For information, please contact Jill Cox on [email protected] or phone 703-963-8251.
