ST THOMAS THE APOSTLE NEWS

Goodbye Year 13 and Hello Year 6 This week has been one of mixed emotions at St Thomas the Apostle. We have had to say goodbye to year 13 who are leaving School for the last time, to go out into the world after their A Level exams, and to fly high in the world. At the same time, we have had the pleasure of welcoming a new crop of year 7 students into the STAC community from their primary schools. It is always very strange, and sad, when students are not in the school regularly any more. Thank you to Year 13, for all you gave to STAC. For all you did to care, and lead. Thank you, to those students who have served the school for seven or five years, and thank you to all the students who joined us in the Sixth Form and made us even better. I hope your time with us has been a happy one, and that you feel prepared to step into the world as adults. You will be dearly missed! However, it is not all doom and gloom as this week we have also had joy of welcoming our new year 7s to the school. The first year at secondary school is a big step up, with lots of interesting subjects to get used to, a different building to explore, a different ethos and new teachers and friends to meet. We are confident, with guidance, they will do this very well. Finally, please accept my best wishes for a very enjoyable, and hopefully, warm summer break. Mr Gould-Elia Assistant Headteacher

As a part of Refugee Week, Year 12 were graced with the opportunity to meet Amy, a volunteer in the ‘My Start’ programme for refugees within Africa, and the refugee himself, Jacob Deng. They came in to inform us about the issues of refugees within Africa, particularly in East Africa, as well as the things they are personally doing to help them and inspire them as talented and creative people. Many of the refugees appeared to possess a range of talents, such as art, the ability to make music, as well as the ability to execute and participate in music videos themselves. Their work was displayed and presented to us, before later being brought to London, and displayed in schools across London in order to expose young children to the inescapable and traumatic experiences of these refugees. We were then introduced to a competition that provided students, like us, across London, to

create pieces of art, music, or creative writing, to then be shared with these refugees, as well as even be displayed for hundreds to see, similarly to those talented pieces of the refugees, in London. Jacob Deng also gave a small group of year 12’s a chance to hear about his personal experience as a refugee, for his whole life. The Kukuma camp, which was set up in 1991, was somewhere Jacob had to flee to as a refugee, at the age of 11, due to the conflict within both South Sudan, as well as North Sudan, which as many of us may already know, is still occurring now. His personal experience as a refugee, informed us about the parallels between the way we, as people of the developed world, may view refugees and their experiences, and the reality of their lives. Fortunately, I was able to later sit down and have a conversation with him, alongside a few of my friends, about his life, both past and present. Jacob informed us about the fact that he had always been a refugee, even before finding himself in the camp of Kukuma, which actually translates to ‘nothing’, due to the constant conflict within South Sudan, meaning he had to constantly travel form camp to camp, roughly every 3-4 months. At 11, he found himself residing in Kukuma, in order to escape conflict, to live in unimaginable conditions, which, he explained, really made him question his faith. His encounters of fleeing from soldiers for hours, and rising up against the government, whilst simultaneously sticking with his education, despite adversity coming from all angles, was extremely moving and insightful. Currently, Jacob, someone who taught up to 250 students in the camps, is studying at UCL, after working tirelessly in order to achieve a scholarship to study here for a year. He informed us that he did have the opportunity to apply for asylum here in the UK, however he believed that in order to really make a change for the better, his place would always be the refugee camp in Kukuma, a place where he could really help others, the way others helped him. Jacob’s last message to us, was that at the end of the day, people will remember us for what we did, who we touched, and the change we made, and that we should be the 1% of the world, that do instead of saying we will do, and make that change for the better. A-Level Geography Feildtrip to Slapton, Ley, Devon

SIXTH FORM NEWS

A-level Geography is where it is at! Last week, a group of six A-Level Geography students, including myself, travelled down to Devon on the south coast. As a required part of our non-examined assessment component of our A-level course, it was important that we conducted primary research in the field. Our overall aim was to study the coastal zone and how it changes over time along Start Bay. The six of us stayed over at Slapton Ley Field Studies Centre for four days, carrying out various different fieldwork methods each day. These four days of fieldwork gave us a more in depth learning experience on how the coast changes rapidly overtime and how one area of the coast may be starved of its sediment, leading to increased vulnerability for the settlements further along the coast. It also showed us how coastal processes such as longshore drift can affect sediment and deposition in different areas of the bay. During our time there, we carried out some fieldwork which allowed us to generate primary data, both qualitative to quantitative. We conducted beach cross-profiles, questionnaires and environmental quality surveys, amongst many more. We all worked well with other schools and improved our team-building skills. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Devon and are looking forward to writing up our non-examined assessment over the coming months. Ogbemudia Yesufu Year 12 Geography Student

St Thomas the Apostle’s Oxbridge Pathways programme concluded with its final event of the academic year: the Year 12 Oxbridge Pathways induction. It was a two-day event that aimed to expose students to new cultural experiences, spark curiosity and more importantly to bond as a group. The first day consisted of problem solving, critical thinking and a research challenge. We set off to two museums: The Wellcome Collection and Grant Museum of Zoology. We enjoyed a picnic in the sun and enjoyed the hands on experience of the museums. Our day culminated in a visit to University of Oxford. We were fortunate enough to be hosted by St Anne’s College, where we took part in a tour, maths lectures and able to ask questions about university life. It was a fantastic few days and we look forward to welcoming our new cohort in September. You can follow our journey on Twitter @stac6thform . It was a fantastic end to our most competitive year of applications to date- with a record 5 applicants to every place. Futures Day This year marked the first ever Future’s Day for Year 12 which

acted as a taster to all things careers and destinations as they move into their final year. The day began with a workshop from the University of Leicester where pupils were able to find out exactly what made a competitive application and were able to gain tips about what universities were looking for. Pupils then moved off into smaller groups and had mini-seminars from various companies and industries including: Oyster Worldwide- a gap year company, White Hat- a higher level apprenticeship company and University of Hertfordshire discussing degree apprenticeships. The degree apprenticeships certainly gave our cohort food for thought, as the idea of earning a salary whilst gaining a degree, and emerging debt free was very appealing. For our budding Oxbridge applicants and Medics, there were informal sessions with doctors and an Economics lecturer from Clare College, University of Cambridge which served as an opportunity to get some last minute insight ahead of UCAS applications. It was an informative and interesting day and we are excited to see what our students’ futures will look like. Miss Rodin Acting Joint Head of Sixth Form and Head of Year 13

This week it was the turn of Ms Khan’s 9Y2 Italian class to tackle the tiramisù and face the challenge of making the world-famous dessert that has been loved by millions over the past 50 years, in a school classroom in over 50 minutes! 9Y2 more than succeeded in facing this challenge! In groups of 3, students excelled in team work, presentation but more importantly, following an Italian recipe in the target language. After showing off their skills of whisking, soaking, layering (and breaking a couple of eggs), we were all more than impressed with the result. It was an extremely close competition between all groups, but there was only one who could win the title of the best Tiramisu, winning with just 1 point over the others! Well done to Ibrahim, Miguel and Rhys! The real test now is, can you make it at home for your family? Have a go yourselves… Ricetta (recipe) per 4 persone: Biscotti savoiardi (sponge finger biscuits) – 90g Caffè nero amaro (black coffee) – 90ml Uova fresche (fresh eggs) - 3 Zucchero (sugar) – 90g Mascarpone – 250g Cacao in polvere (cocoa powder) – for the topping Buon appetito! Congratulations to 8x1 Italian for coming in the top 3 on the TIL leaderboard last week! Your class should be really proud - we're very impressed! They were awarded a certificate which they are holding very proudly- a real show of great team work and class contribution! This could not have happened without the whole class coming together to win points for themselves. Each of their points add up to their class total so it’s a great achievement to be in the top 3, amidst all the schools taking part in this initiative around the world! A huge well done on behalf of the MFL Department!

Special mentions for Ryan Lawot (Year 8 -2nd place), Josiah Fadipe (Year 8 -3rd place), Favour Olajugba (Year 8 -10th place), Anton McDermott (Year 7- 3rd place) and Halim Bakare (Year 8- 8th place) who have all also featured last week in the top 10 students all around the world using This Is Language!! As we come towards the end of the year the History department are beginning to look ahead to the next year. In May the department placed a bid for a fully funded trip to Hampton Court led by experts. We were successful in our application and look forward to taking a group of our A-Level students to the Palace in September. Preparations have also begun for our trips for the upcoming year. Our KS3 students are hopefully looking forward to their journey to Edinburgh in October and being scared witless in the Edinburgh Dungeons! Our current year 8 students who have selected History at GCSE and current year 9 students should also look out for a letter soon launching our Battlefields trip in February. The trip will be a residential centred around the pretty town of Ypres in Belgium. The boys will get the opportunity to experience the trenches and battlefields of WWI and investigate battlefield surgery in the very place it happened (as well as stocking up on Belgian waffles and chocolate). Ms Apps Head of History

On Tuesday 25th June, 40 boys from years 7-9 along with Mr Lemaire, Ms Khan, Mr Fletcher, Mr Portela and myself embarked upon an amazing adventure to Italy. A long coach journey was made much more bearable by Mr Lemaire and Mr Fletcher’s songs (and Mr Portela’s karaoke session), to which the boys sang along with gusto. On Wednesday afternoon we arrived at our hotel in Lido di Jesolo, which is close to Venice on Italy’s beautiful northeast coast. After unpacking and showering, we settled down for a traditional pasta dinner (and another 2 courses – we were very full afterwards). Buonissimo! After a much-needed night’s sleep, we enjoyed a buffet breakfast at the hotel – where the boys discovered the joys of the waffle machine – before heading to Venice. We made sure we all had plenty of water, sun cream and hats as it was very hot, then we enjoyed a boat ride into the city. The sunshine made perfect conditions for Mr Fletcher’s photography competition, which the boys took part in with great enthusiasm. The view was incredible as we walked to the Piazza di San Marco for a tour of the stunning church, the Basilica di San Marco. Our guide told us how the intricate mosaics were painstakingly created, and the jaw-dropping amount of gold that was contained upon them. The boys did the school proud as they respectfully toured the church – our tour guide even said that they were the best group she had ever been with. We then had a city tour before getting the boat back to the coach to spend an afternoon playing on the huge beach in Lido di Jesolo. The next day brought us to Padua, where we saw the world-famous Scrovegni Chapel – with Giotto’s paintings on the roof and walls depicting the life of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Again the boys conducted themselves with great maturity and respect, garnering more compliments from the tour guide. They also had a tour of St Anthony’s Church, where we saw the fantastic relics of some great saints – though unfortunately the tongue of St Anthony was not there this time. A trip to the local arcade followed another afternoon at the beach – the boys had a great time playing all the games and winning tokens for prizes. A special mention must go to Nathan Mensah, who almost set a new record on the punch bag machine – if you think you could do better, be my guest! We headed back home on Saturday morning in great spirits, stopping for a scenic McDonald’s in the Alps on the way. The trip enabled the boys to learn so much about Italy and they also had an incredible opportunity to further explore their faith. All in all, an unforgettable experience. Aspirations Evening 2019 On a warm Thursday night the school played host to 175 professionals from a vast array of industries and professions for annual flagship careers event. The networking evening gives our students from Year 10 & 12 the opportunity to meet people that they would never normally be able to access. Alumni, friends of the staff, contacts built up over time came in to help our young people with their future career choices. The students met with people from Public Sector organisations like the NHS, Crown Prosecution Service as well as guests from industries including Banking, Fitness, Marketing, IT, Law, Media, Creative Arts and Engineering. We were so glad to attract some many of our Alumni to give back to the current cohorts and help inspire the new crop. The feedback has been incredible from our guests, many of who have offered to work with us again in the new academic year with assemblies, visits, mentoring and attending next year. The students have been able to contact guests for advice and guidance as well as ask for work shadowing and apprenticeship opportunities. I am so grateful to all of our guests, to all of the staff that made the event run so smoothly and the students from Years 10 and 12 who attended and engaged so positively with the event. Huge thanks must go to Miss Eels, Mrs Williams, Miss Smilie, Miss Wright, Mrs Watts, Miss Jones and Miss Miller as well as the staff that attended and the SLT for supporting the event. Year 10 Work Experience week The highlight of the Year 10 calendar is their week of work experience. A phenomenally successfully week whereby we had more students out on work experience placements and 32 different organisations visited. This year we opened work experience up to more of the year group to give them greater responsibility with their own career destination and to find out more about their employment pathway. We secured placements at the Government department for Health and Social Care working with MPs and government aides. Boys went to Montagu, an highly professional consultancy firm, Ofcom, IPSOS data analysis, Tate Modern Gallery, M&S to name just a few. Boys experienced industries such as IT, Creative Design, Architecture, Engineering, Microbiology, Retail, the Charity sector and a number of different entrepreneurs. The employers have been very generous in their appraisals of our students, overwhelmingly positive about the attitude, focus and dedication shown. The boys that different attend work experience placements were given the opportunity to visit companies that they may consider for their future careers. A week full of visits to organisations all across London like Chelsea FC, Ofcom, Centrepoint, Deusche Bank, SalesForce, Laing O’Rouke construction, MACE engineering, CASS Business school, Tower Bridge to name a few. The huge amount of organisation is well worth it when you hear back from the boys regarding their experiences and what they found out. Making these differences is the aim for me. I am very grateful to all the staff that went with the boys especially Ms Asirelli who took a walking tour on her own, much to the delight of the boys that went with her. We have made some amazing contacts for the future meaning the future cohorts benefit from such amazing visits. Mr Todd Head of Business and Employability

Last week, the Year 10’s competed in the final house football competition of the year. All the games were played in the correct spirit with some great quality on show. With Griffith flying through the group stages and winning all their games, it came down to them playing Jones in the final. After a goalless 12 minutes and an additional 3 minutes in extra time, the game went to penalties. With Griffith scoring 2 and missing 2 after taking first, Jones managed to slot away all their penalties to win the final. 1st Place – Jones: 400 points + 80 participation = 480 points 2nd Place – Griffith: 300 points + 80 participation = 380 points 3rd Place – Gunstone: 200 points + 90 participation = 290 points 4th Place – Rigby: 100 points + 20 participation = 120 points

The year 7’s competed in their first STAC swimming competition. An honourable mention must go to Jordi from Griffith who competed in every single race. An excellent performance from the Gunstone boys in all of the races saw them take home the 400 points.

1st Place – Gunstone: 400 points + 20 participation = 420 points 2nd Place – Rigby: 300 points + 40 participation = 340 points 3rd Place – Jones: 200 points + 30 participation = 230 points 4th Place – Griffith: 100 points + 10 participation + 50 bonus points = 160 points

Sports Day 2019- Viva Les Blues It was a day to remember for Griffith as they ran out victors on what was a superb day of sport. For our first time ever, Year 12 joined us on Sports Day and really set the tone for what was a fantastic day. The boys and girls in year 12 were superb and a real credit to the school. The way in which they motivated and inspired some of our youngers students was a sight to behold. In year 7 it was Gunstone who narrowly came out on top. Michael Akinpelu winning Gold in the Triple Jump and Mikel Francis likewise in the 300m set the bar very high. Godwill Amasse and Michael A also had one of the performances of the day, both winning the Gold with 1.35m in the high jump. Despite only one gold medal in year 8, it was also Gunstone who took the team honours. Ewan Gauci claimed Gold in the high jump, but it was Gunstone’s participation and effort rates that made led to their team winning the year 8 competition. Daniel Akinbobola won the 800m for Griffith and Emmanuel Adefusi took the Javelin gold. In the biggest domination of the day, Griffith won the year 9 competition by over 1000 points. Rhema Ayobore’s dominance on the track, winning both 800 and 1500m for the blues. Agegnehu and Francis were a rare Jones highlight in what was a disappointing day for the boys and girls in red. Francis jumped 1.68cm in the high jump and Agengnehu ran 23.6 in the 200m claiming golds. In year 10, Elikem won 3 Gold medals across the Javelin, Shott and Discus. However, fellow team mates did not back him up meaning the likes of Sam Sewell and Nathan Lamina in Gunstone ran off eventual winners. It was a superb event and we already can’t wait for next year. Well done everyone. Mr Kliber Head of PE

Summer Concert On the final Tuesday evening of the year, the STAC community was treated to the annual Summer Concert. This marked a culmination of a huge amount of hard work from our music and drama students over the course of the year, with nearly 100 students involved in various ways. Highlights included rousing performances from Big Band and Gospel Choir, and some excellence was shown in solo performances given by a representative from each year group. Perhaps the most profound moment was when all students who had passed exams over the year were given a round of applause for their efforts, showing the hard work, seriousness and dedication that goes into the students’ work – not during lesson time but before and after school, and at lunchtimes – practising and undertaking additional lessons and rehearsals. Well done to all those involved, and a big thank you to all of the staff and parents who have supported the Expressive Arts faculty over what has been a very successful year! Mr Parratt Head of Expressive Arts We band of brothers” Year 7 students - Timi Adeko, Oscar Araque, Michael Boateng, Elliott Chandler, Jayden Donkoh, Oladele Lanlehin, Thomas Baars, Ben Joseph, Olaoluwadipupo Adeniyi-Williams, Nnaemeka Odirichukwu, Josiah Gyasi-Sundu, Russell Chukwuma, Oluwatobiloba Adelagun, David Ogiribo performed the first 2 acts of Shakespeare’s Henry V at The Globe as part of Our Theatre 2019 project. Working alongside Harris Girls’ Academy, Southwark Playhouse Elders Company, Southwark Youth Theatre and Tuke School, Our Theatre Company staged the entire play for a matinee and evening performance at The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse on July 11th. The following day at STAC, the students performed an abridged version of the play in front of an audience of their Year 7 peers in the Drama Studio. It was a brilliant experience for the students who developed their skills as performers and ensemble players. Mr Anderson Head of Drama
