ST. TERESA’S
ACADEMY2016 | 2017 T H E N E X T 1 5 0 Y E A R S S T A R T N O W
Similar to a college campus, students move between and within the four buildings that surround the central Quad throughout the school day. Students follow a modular scheduling system that is customized for every student’s academic needs.
The women who enter St. Teresa’s Academy
this fall will usher in the next generation
of STA, 150 years after the doors first opened.
WELCOME TO ST. TERESA’S ACADEMY. SPONSORED BY THE SISTERS OF ST. JOSEPH OF
CARONDELET AND COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION, THE ACADEMY OFFERS
A RIGOROUS ACADEMIC CURRICULUM COMBINED WITH THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY,
COMPETITIVE ATHLETIC TEAMS, AWARD-WINNING FINE ARTS PROGRAMS,
AND A WIDE VARIETY OF EXTRACURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES —
ALL FOUNDED ON THE CORNERSTONES OF CATHOLIC FAITH.

NAN TIEHEN BONE
President
St. Teresa’s Academy is such a special school. (I find myself saying this all the time!) It is a place of sisterhood and transformation. It is steeped in tradition while academically progressive. Our teachers and staff carry on the mission of our founding Sisters of St. Joseph to educate the whole student in body, mind and spirit as a means toward empowering young women today.
With so much promise and opportunity ahead of you, we hope you’ll consider taking a good look at St. Teresa’s Academy and all that we have to offer. Visit our beautiful campus by attending one of our many athletic events, theatre productions, or choir performances. Our Open House in early October is the perfect time for you and your parents to get a good feel for the school and meet the incredible young women who will become your future “sisters.”
This fall, we officially kick-off the Academy 150 Capital Campaign, which is outlined on the opposite page. Although many components of the campaign are already in place (as you’ll see in this piece), this campaign illustrates our commitment to creating an environment of excellence for both current and future students.
We know St. Teresa’s is a place where you can learn, grow, create, thrive and discover who you are. I can’t wait for it to be your time here!
From the President
AS WE CONTINUE TO CELEBRATE THIS MONUMENTAL ANNIVERSARY AND BEGIN TO
EMBARK ON THE NEXT 150 YEARS, I CAN’T HELP BUT THINK...THERE IS NO BETTER TIME
TO BE A STUDENT AT ST. TERESA’S THAN RIGHT NOW.
Academy 150 Capital CampaignTO HONOR OUR PAST, WE’RE CREATING A SCHOOL FOR THE FUTURE.
When the school first opened in 1866, the Civil War just ended and cowboys and cattle drives dominated the open range. Back then, a small group of education-minded Sisters of St. Joseph journeyed to Kansas City by riverboat. Upon the shores of the Missouri River, they looked to the future and understood the importance of educating young women.
Today at St. Teresa’s Academy, we continue to look to the future as education expands exponentially. We continue to prepare today’s young women for global competition by equipping them with 21st century learning skills. Check out the future of St. Teresa’s Academy.

St. Teresa’s Academy excels at meeting the specific needs of girls.

Students from all over the metropolitan area attend St. Teresa’s Academy. The
freshman class of 2020 will represent 46 different zip codes
and 37 schools across state lines (65% Missouri, 35%
Kansas). Ten percent of the class are members of the
Number One Club, a school organization whose members
are the only ones from their grade/middle school.
1 STA Advantage:A L L F E M A L E E N V I R O N M E NT
This is your future and it is filled with limitless possibilities..
As the oldest school in Kansas City,
St. Teresa’s Academy has a long history
of educating and molding successful
women. We take pride in knowing the
young women who enter these doors
leave as confident, well-educated women.
The all-girls environment at St. Teresa’s
naturally encourages you to fill
leadership positions, breaking through
traditional stereotypical roles. Studies
indicate that females in single sex
environments have greater self-esteem
and participate two and one half times
more often than within co-ed environments.
Further, studies indicate that young
women from single-sex schools have
higher career goals and more doctorate
degrees than their counterparts in
co-ed schools.
Here, you’ll find opportunities to take
leadership roles in areas that interest
you most. A culture of acceptance,
support, and achievement among
your classmates is the norm. Teachers
capitalize on the unique learning
style of girls to encourage positive
academic risk and healthy competition.

Serving the Dear Neighbor
Our Campus Ministry team enriches
and encourages the faith of the STA
community through daily prayer, school
liturgies, and student retreats. The
youth-based ministry model encourages
students to take active, leadership
roles in planning and leading spiritual
experiences throughout the school year.
Kairos retreats, offered four times yearly,
provide opportunities for upperclassmen
to further their faith and strengthen
relationships among classmates.
Students gather for all school liturgies
throughout the year and for individual
class Masses each month. Parents are
invited to celebrate Mass with their
daughter the first Thursday of each
month prior to the school day.
Your involvement, whether singing at
Mass or helping coordinate your class
retreat, is valued and encouraged.
Meditative prayer is an important part
of your spiritual and personal growth. In
addition to daily prayer, the chapel is often
open for students to spend a few quiet
moments in reflection and quiet prayer.
As a Junior and Senior, you’ll participate in
one of the strongest service programs
in the city, completing a minimum of 90
hours of service before you graduate.
In addition, student clubs and advisories
coordinate and fundraise for organizations
both locally and internationally. Serving
the Dear Neighbor throughout the
spectrum of life is a core charism of
the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

Science students keep the school’s three 3D printers humming nearly every hour of the school day as they learn how to design, create, and construct objects. Science teachers are currently having students build prosthetic parts for hands that can be donated to third world countries. The art and graphics/digital design teachers have created several new courses that combine drawing software and 3D printing.

Full STEAM Ahead
Here at St. Teresa’s Academy, we
are committed to helping break down
gender stereotypes and demonstrate
unique ways to make STEAM learning
more relevant to young women.
Our pilot Steam Mentoring and Service
Program, with KCPT and Black & Veatch,
brings STA students together with
professional engineers and into
classrooms in neighboring school districts.
STA girls are joining forces with local
high schools to build and program
robots at the KC Engineering Zone,
and have plans to create an all-girls
First Tech Challenge Team.
The STEM Certificate Program,
which will launch in the fall of 2016, ac-
knowledges students’ achievements
and involvement in STEM-related
activities. The program is designed to
provide preparation and opportunities
related to STEM fields in and beyond
the typical classroom.
WHEN IT COMES TO STEAM, YOUNG WOMEN TODAY ARE UNDERREPRESENTED
IN BOTH EDUCATION AND CAREERS. STA IS COMMITTED TO INTRODUCING
MORE YOUNG WOMEN INTO THE FIELDS OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY,
ENGINEERING, ART (CREATIVITY), AND MATH.
Through our capital campaign, we will be embarking on renovating the Goppert Center to include a Learning Commons — a library of the future. With extensive online research facilities, movable furniture for collaboration, huddle spots for silent study and an on-staff librarian, this space will provide limitless opportunities to research, learn and collaborate. Included in the renovation will also be new high-tech classrooms, a new home for the design and journalism department, as well as a new robotics lab.

Whether you choose to serve the dear neighbor
in Guatemala or travel to Japan to visit our sister
school, you’ll gain greater understanding and
greater compassion through immersion in other
world cultures and languages.
The Theology and English Departments have
collaborated to create a cross-curricular elective
where experiential learning occurs through the
combination of literature and travel.
Students traveled to China, Japan, Guatemala,
Italy, France and Spain during the 2015-16 school
year. Whether students choose to serve the dear
neighbor, complete an optional immersion trip as
part of their cross-curricular studies, or explore
different lands and cultures for fun, students are
engaging ethically, critically, and empathetically
with the world around them.

“It was a moor indeed, windy and bleak and broken up by
an elevating ridge running obliquely across its south
half, while the north half had through it a low swampy
ravine – nothing encouraging about it, nothing attractive
in any way– but we had visualized it as we see
it at this writing, the most beautiful school
grounds in the country, a little bit of paradise.”

ACADEMY 150 CAPITAL CAMPAIGN:LOOKING AHEAD
The Academy 150 Capital Campaign will establish a preservation fund to care for the Windmoor campus and buildings for another 150 years. In addition, we will be converting our beautiful campus into an arboretum: trees and plants will be studied and new ones added. Members of the Science, Campus Ministry, and Graphic Design Departments are collaborating to create a map of the trees and a contemplative prayer walk for future visitors to campus.
