Yesterday we had the pleasure of hosting the Diocesan Catholic Education Council Meeting here at St. Philomena?s. Mrs Jenny Allen, Director of Education for our Bathurst Diocese asked me on the first day of the school year if I would give a brief presentation outlining the changes and achievements of our school community over the last three or four years. I was honoured to do so, and for me, as leader of the school, it was a valuable opportunity of reflection and insight regarding the many opportunities that we have taken and used to implement changes across the school in a myriad of ways. Many of these changes will be outlined at our first Parent Engagement sessions being held on Thursday 7th March in our school foyer area beginning at 10.00am and again that evening at 7.00pm. Please indicate your preference as to the morning or afternoon session via the following l ink .

On Thursday of Week Two, a parent engagement survey was sent to ascertain where we as a school can support parents in a very busy and often socially and emotionally challenging world. From the 35 responses received, the resounding reply was Resiliency: promoting good health and well-being. Resiliency is seen as the capacity to be calm, clear and adaptive when the going gets tough. Building resilience is part of the growth of social and development skills. I encourage parents to take the opportunity to come along to a Parent Engagement session on Thursday 28th March at 7.00pm facilitated by our school counsellor Yin Hourigan from Centacare.

Children encounter moments throughout their school life where they are challenged socially and emotionally. Resilience is a skill that can be taught and working in partnership with our parents is key to success. Your approach as a parent when your child has difficulty at school can make a huge difference in their resilience and their future relationships with teachers and peers; this may include not only any advice you may give and the way you give it but also the way you approach the school if that becomes necessary. Some helpful information can be found here.

Next week is Catholic Schools Week. We begin the week on Sunday when everyone is invited to come and celebrate Mass at the Cathedral at 10am. Mrs Powell, our Primary Music teacher, has invited our children to join the combined school's choir for the Mass. It would be fantastic to see as many of

our school families coming together as a community to begin a week of acknowledging the great work of our school.

Our Year Six children begin the week with an Orientation day at MacKillop and Stannies. We celebrate Ash Wednesday on 6th March with Mass at 11.30am in the Girra Girra Gymnasium, Fr Paul will celebrate the beginning of the Lenten Season, all are welcome to participate. Following Mass, we have Open Classrooms where our community is welcome to view and experience some of the fabulous achievements being attained by our children across the school.

We culminate the week with our school fete which begins on Friday 8th March at 4.00pm. Don?t forget to volunteer on a stall or one of the fantastic rides and activities for the children. I thank Sheree Richards, our fete coordinator, and all parents involved, for the outstanding work done so far in preparing for the event, it?s a perfect opportunity for everyone to come together, meet new families and share insights, creative talents and community spirit.

Our Work, Health and Safety continues to be a top priority. Last Thursday we put in place our first fire drill of the year, with this Thursday our first emergency lock-down drill occuring. These drills occur each term to ensure a well coordinated and organised evacuation from the school, should a situation arise.

You will shortly see our grounds staff in fluro St. Phil's 'MAINTENANCE' uniforms. These are so we can easily identify them in the playground and around the grounds, and for the purpose of Child Protection and visibility for families to know who is who in and around the school. We continue to manage the front reception area with the lock out system, ensuring at all t imes, the safety of your children. We continue to request your cooperation with parking, pick-up and drop-off zones, ensuring also the correct use of our crossing.

Have a wonderful week. Mrs Louise Davies

FROM MRS DAVIES... MORNING ROUTINESAs we are approaching week six (can you believe it!?), our children, particularly

Kindy and new children to the school, seem to have settled in extremely well. To assist with teacher preparation time (between 8.30am and 8.55am), we ask that

when you drop children to school, that they go straight to the playground, leaving bags in the lunch area, not straight to classrooms. This time in the morning is

critical for our teachers to set up for the busy day ahead. Your cooperation and

understanding is appreciated.

The students are deepening their understanding of how the Commandments help them in their relationship with God and others.
