Year 12 student and boarder, Cyndy Uzzell, spoke to the College community on Wednesday on the importance of surrounding ourselves with positive people, people who believe in you. Who we associate with influences our thoughts and feelings, our goals, and in turn the direction of our lives. If we are surrounded by people who are happy with their lives, who are positive, who are grateful for the good in their lives, these behaviours and thoughts will no doubt rub off onto us.

When our children are younger we can sometimes guide them towards others who display those positive characteristics, but as they grow older, our sage words can sometimes fall on deaf ears; so what do we do? Some parents choose to monitor the rela-tionship their child has with a not-so-suitable friend in the hope that their own child will quickly leave this person behind. Other parents voice their disapproval loudly, which can lead their child to dig their heels in and continue the relationship out of spite and not genuine feelings.

Whichever course a parent takes, it is essential that open lines of communication are maintained between parent and child, that parents know who their child’s friends are, and take an interest in who their child is socialising with at school, out of school, at sport and on the internet.

My hope is we each have the ability to trust the healthy people and relationships in our lives and the strength to let go of the others.

Yours sincerely,

Wednesday saw another game for the Bentley Bombers. With Lucy and Margo leading the charge the girls played well and came out with a win. On Friday evening everyone relaxed after the Athletics Carnival; at least it would be more accurate to say that the boarders relaxed, while Suz, who was on duty, worked hard matching boarders to bikes and pumping tyres ready for Saturday night’s moonlight bike ride. A huge thank you to Suz for all the work she put in to organising the night, a job which was made even more onerous by my absence. I don’t think students realise the amount of planning and work that goes into these events and she worked very hard both on Fri-day and Saturday to get everything in place.

It was a perfect night for the ride with a cloudless sky and a beautiful moon high in the sky. It took two trips to get everyone out there with bikes, but it was worth it. Some of the girls found it a long way, but they all completed the ride successfully and appeared back at the boarding house at about 10:50pm – happy and ready for a good night’s sleep.

Saturday was a busy day as it was also the day we helped the Salvation Army with the Red Shield Appeal. Some groups who couldn’t do it on the Saturday had gone out earlier, but the majority went early Saturday morning and came back with $900. Well done to all those who took part.

Also this weekend we had Shannon Killer on duty for the first time. We are delighted to welcome Shannon to the boarding staff. She is a full time teacher at the College and Head of Art so is well used to teenage girls. We hope her association with the boarding house will be a long and happy one.

An apprenticeship in the building and construction industry is a great way for those who prefer a more hands-on approach to learning to get a head start. This industry offers many varied and rewarding career paths that students may not realise are options for them. Housing Industry Associated (HIA) provides an in-school Adviser Program to provide information and advice to students in Years 9 and up about such opportunities. Industry presentations are conducted across the country to help potential apprentices make an informed decision about the right Australian Apprenticeship pathway.

The presentation will include a 6-minute DVD as well as a short PowerPoint presentation to give students an overview of the building and construction industry. HIA will also provide accompanying handouts and brochures for students to take home for consideration.

Housing Industry Associated (HIA) is coming to St Philip’s on Thursday 6 June at lunchtime. (1:20 – 2:00pm) Students in Years 9 – 12 and parents are invited to attend this presentation in Room 8. Please register your interest to Leslie Tilbrook or Tina LaPalombara as soon as possible.

Five am, the time of day when most people are fast asleep and happily dreaming, yet for we exchange students, 5 am was the time when we set off for an adventure. Groggy and sleepy eyed, we all piled on to the bus and drove off into the unknown, none of us knowing what to expect.

We were incredibly surprised at what we found. We met people from all around Australia and the world; we tried foods such as kangaroo and camel, both of which were delicious; we trekked up Ayers Rock, with very few making it to the top and being absolutely exhausted afterwards; we had many encounters with flies along the way and many people were nearly driven mad by them. For many of us, we had the opportunity to sleep under the stars for the first time, which was amazing and it truly was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Overall, our trip was more than any of us could have possibly imagined. Many of us will never have the chance to do the things that we did over this past weekend ever again and we will surely remember it as one of our fondest experiences during our exchange.

Term 2 - Week 8 A monk, in his travels, once found a precious stone and kept it. One day he met a traveller, and when the monk opened his bag to share his provisions, the traveller saw the jewel and asked the monk to give it to him. The monk did so readily.

The traveler departed, overjoyed with the unexpected gift of the precious stone that was enough to give him wealth and security for the rest of his life. However, a few days later he came back in Search of the monk, found him, gave him back the stone, and entreated him, “Now, please, give me something much more precious than this stone, valuable as it is. Give me that which enabled you to give it to me”.
